T205 question

Posted By: warshawlaw
A colleague showed me a number of lower grade T205's with what appeared to be greenish borders. The borders with no signs of gold on them. The backs appeared unremarkable. The players were commons and the conditions were low, so I doubt anyone would have gone to the trouble of counterfeiting them. He had speculated that the gold tarnished but this hardly seems likely; I don't think ATC used gold leaf on the edges. Has anyone else seen a card like this and if so, any idea what would cause it?

T205 question

Posted By: David
I have seen T205s without the gilding (gold was not used and on nearly all T205s, the originally gold-colored metal dust has tarnished). On all of these, the borders were yellow. This yellow was either because the borders were printed yellow to hide any potential chips or 'holes' in the application of the metal dust. Or the size (glue) that was applied during gilding was yelllow or turned yellow.

Most of these yellow T205s were in rough shape and sometimes hand-cut. This would suggest that many of them were printer scraps, where the final production step (gilding) was never finished.

T205 question

Posted By: runscott
I also have a "yellow border" where the gold wasn't applied, as well as a "green border" that Bill gave me. The one I have has a very rough surface to the green area, whereas the gold ones are smooth. I think the green border may be from using copper in the gilding - they got cheap.

T205 question

Posted By: TBob
I had about 15 of them many years ago which all came from the same place. This is long before the set was "officially" reproduced and before scumsters thought about reprinting and faking them. They were all commons except Chance and Matty. I think I may still have the Matty and if I do, I'll post a scan.
