El Principe de Gales was the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII. He was granted the title in 1841 as heir apparent to Queen Victoria, and did not become King until 1901.

He was known internationally as the Playboy Prince, and the perfect representative for a cigar brand since he was also known to be a heavy smoker.

The brand name El Principe de Gales had been in use since the 1850's, pre-dating the future King George V who did not become Prince of Wales until 1901.

Upon King Edward's death in 1910, King George assumed the throne, and the brand name most likely lost its meaning as you theorized.

I had a feeling it was actually Edward. Sort of odd that they kept the brand going so long after he became king, but I suppose if sales stayed good there wasn't much reason to change. From the photos I've seen George had a similar look, so maybe it still made some sense until 1910.

I had a quick look at some stamp series, and the Canadian stamps of Georges reign are called the admirals, mostly because the depict him in his admiral of the fleet uniform, a theme that turns up in the ads. So the transition was probably an easy one.
Both Edward and George were admiral of the navy, a largely ceremonial title that could be held by more than one person, and was occasionally held by a foreign leader like Czar Nicholas. And of the royal family the only one holding the title without having naval service was Edward VII - Something I didn't know before looking it up.

This stuff can be a lot of fun, and not just for learning about baseball :D

Steve and Ron

Thanks for some interesting bit of history regarding the EPDG brand.

I notced that in the 1911 divestiture of the American Tobacco Company (ATC), the EPDG brand was
not assigned to any of the three resulting Tobacco Company's (ATC....Liggett & Meyers....Lorillard).

Not sure how this one survived on eBay.... although I'm sure there are more out there, this is only the 2nd Yum Yum I've seen that relates directly to the card issue (i.e., we know that cards were packaged in the cubed tins). When this arrives, I'm hoping there might be remnants of the baseball card advertising band left (doubt it, but hopeful!).

These are obviously more modern but I think they are fun nonetheless. When I purchased the Stengel Durocher die cut counter display I was told that it was issued to store owners in New York in the fall of 1951. The Fernando item was produced in Mexico in 1981. I miss Fernando. Although I am always proud of my roots, being a Mexican American was especially meaningful that summer.

"Watching Fernando Valenzuela force himself into a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform is something like seeing Kate Smith struggling to fit into a pair of Brooke Shields' designer jeans." - Sportswriter H.G. Reza in the San Francisco Chronicle (1981)

I must concur with another poster--one of the best threads ever. Simply amazing stuff. I bought "Tobacco Advertising, the Great Seduction," but was disappointed by the small section on posters (great book otherwise).

I am fascinated with 1900-1910 era posters, and am interested in buying if anyone is selling Piedmont/Sweet Cap/Hassan/Murad/Sovereign or related posters (I don't mean to hijack the thread). If so, please PM me.
(Also, if anyone knows of an impending auction with vintage posters and related memorabilia, can someone post this info?).

Didn't I get my (original) GQ pack from you, 10+ yrs ago? Have only seen one other and a board member has it. I sold it to him about 5 yrs ago and got it off of ebay. He paid a hefty price for it too.....as, if memory serves me, I did too on my original one. One of the only packs I have seen with the date on the inside of it.

I've sold plenty of my "best" items along my journey - and I did sell you my GQ pack YEARS ago. I continue to redefine my focus and it's one of a few packs I'd like for my current 19th century "run". While I'm begging - please keep me in mind should an 1939 acc in original condition pass by you! My want list is small but difficult..........
