Wow! Hulk Hogan Showing Up

Didn't want to post this while the auction was in progress, but I was really excited to find this card since i hadn't seen one up for auction before.

Wrestling card knower abouters, is this an expected result?....got out of my price range pretty quick at the end.

I am sure that DPeck and WrestlingCardKing will weigh in, but that Kajiwara Hogan card from Japan is one of the holy grails of wrestling cards. It is from 1981 (thus predating his Wrestling All Stars card). PSA has only graded four of the Hogan Kajiwara cards to date. It is a 17-card set and PSA has only graded 104 cards total. Andre the Giant also has a cool card in the set that shows him climbing over the top rope to enter the ring.

I was watching the auction on eBay. I thought things might get really crazy in the last two seconds because it is such a rare Hogan card and predates his Wrestling All Stars card. That auction had four bidders over $750 for a raw card, so wrestling collectors knew what they were looking at. The Kajiwara cards were packaged with action figures.

Here are a couple of threads that discuss the set:

Very interesting

Price is surprising. I think it is a play on hoping for a top PSA grade.

The price of the unopened figures has exploded (if you can even find them), and the demand and price of the cards has gone up with them.

Some of the Hulk Hogan packages seem to be missing the Hulk Hogan card, which has most likely helped create demand for the card.

Not meaning to brag, but I once bought an Andre the Giant card from the set for $1, back when there was a lack of info about Japanese wrestling card issues.

I bid a grand and lost.

Only Hogan card that I want badly and don’t have.

That post pretty much sums up the desirability of the Hogan Kajiwara card. When there is a Hogan card that DPeck wants and does not have, it is a desirable card.

wrestlingcardking 03-25-2018 06:06 AM

Most of it has been said already in the thread. I own a PSA 8 and it is in my set of 1981 Popys. There is clearly demand for the card as more information about the card is now known. The fact that it is a short print from the set only adds to the intrigue in addition to the fact that you are potentially competing against another market (figure collectors). I would have predicted $1000 before the auction started regardless of the potential grade of the card. There was a part of me that wanted to bid between $800 to $1000 and have Hogan sign the card but i was on work travel and lost track of time with the auction close. While there are plenty of signed 1982 all stars, I think it would be super cool to own a signed Popy card. I do like the fact that a Japanese seller made the sale. I'm sure he will be utilizing all his resources to bring this card again to the market.

Dpeck100 03-25-2018 11:52 AM

It is a mystery why the only figure from the serious that doesn’t have their card on the front of every figure pack is Hogan. His Cosmos card seems to be short printed as well.

Another reason a single will bring strong money is you don’t have to open a mint on the card figure.

The high selling prices of these will drive some into the market place I bet. I hope at least.

It's been a while since a 1982 Cosmos Hogan has shown up

Finally got one!

Was he always balding?

Props for adding one of the tough ones, in the package!

Pretty much. He had a touch more hair when he came into wrestling but it didn't take long to fall out.

Congrats!

Are you keeping it sealed, or are you going to remove the cards?

Dpeck100 03-24-2019 07:56 PM

No this baby is staying sealed.

I hope to find a raw copy one day but it is simply too awesome of a piece to open at this point.

I could see this figure commanding 10k with the Hogan card showing in the future.

Arazi4442 03-24-2019 07:56 PM

Congrats on the pickup!

I think I kind of like it with the card in the package. Looks great either way.

Dpeck100 03-24-2019 08:06 PM

Thank you.

This card has a touched upper left corner. Probably an 8. A MOC figure with Hogan card in this condition is better to keep sealed. This is easily one of the best Hogan collectibles that exist and I believe a tremendous long term investment.

sthoemke 03-26-2019 12:44 AM

Not to brag, but when no one cared about the Kajiwara cards, I bought an Andre the Giant for $1 in nr-mint/mint condition, and it even included free shipping. I think it was one of my best buys.

Dpeck100 03-26-2019 06:46 AM

I would say your buys of sealed of 83 WAS sets at $5 would beat that. :)

If I could only find them...

What are the 1982AB/1983 sealed sets going for now?

Haven't seen any sales in quite a while.

There really aren't any current comps on EBAY. Obviously they trade at a discount to potential breakup value because corners are so susceptible to damage.

It is such a craps shoot to open them. I had an 82 A pack that looked great only to have almost every corner flattened once I opened it. Deflated card stock so you are looking at probably a 2 or something graded. 75% to 80% loss once opened. On the flip side I opened a pack that looked perfect and got 5 of the 64 PSA 10's. Wide range of outcomes in reality.

Got to give credit where credit is due.

samosa4u 04-06-2019 11:04 AM

Very nice video, David. Lots of great information. Next time, however, you should pick the item up with your hand and bring it closer to the camera. Move it around and show the viewers how the back looks like (instead of just leaving it on the ground the whole time).

I have one question for you: let's say I were to find the Hogan figure with the Mil Mascaras card showing on the top and I decided to open it - are you saying that I might not find the Hogan inside?

Thanks for checking it out. I was just doing my best to avoid saying um. I did a few times but not nearly as many as some of my other videos.

Yes that is exactly what I am saying. There have been no confirmed findings of the Hogan card from any blister packs unless it is the top card.

Harley Race is said to be a short print too with no examples coming from underneath in the pack.

samosa4u 04-10-2019 12:02 PM

Thanks for your quick response.

Here is what doesn't make sense to me: if Hogan was having some kind of financial issue with the company using his image, then why would they pull his card but continue manufacturing his figure?

I really am just guessing. All three of his cards from 81 and 82 from Japan are short printed for some reason.

Maybe it was on purpose to get Japanese kids to buy more. Maybe he didn't agree to the image being used. Maybe it was a mistake.

http://www.wrestlingtradingcards.com...1981_popy.html

It is my understanding that the cards were made by a different manufacture so it would appear there are two licensing agreements involved.

When I worked with Stan Hansen two years ago he has lots of cards from Japan he didn't even know were made and didn't authorize his image being used. He gets super pissed about it and won't sign them.

Like I said in the video his Cosmos card is much harder to find and has only 5 copies graded by PSA and the Flair has 14. For some reason there just aren't as many.

sthoemke 04-11-2019 05:14 PM

A small quantity of the Cosmo sealed bagged sets surfaced a few years ago. None of the sets had the Hogan card (was the only card from the sets missing). Maybe there was a second printing, or the sets were opened and resealed. Both explainations seem unlikely, but not sure of other possibilities. Maybe Hogan was a promo card that wasn't released in the vending bags, but I doubt that also. It remains a mystery. The only other thing I can think off is that maybe kids had a tendancy to pack away the Hogan card (removed from the seconary market), or that it got handled more and therefore more of the card destroyed. Those explainations don't expain the Hogan not being in the bags.

A raw copy just sold for $1,600

Arazi4442 04-18-2019 09:42 AM

That link shows it sold for $3200 and it looks to be a pretty soft copy.
