November pick ups

3 Attachment(s)
Hi All:

As some of you know, I have been an Exhibit collector since putting 2 cents into an Exhibit Card machine in an Amusement park in NJ when I was 10 years old, 53 years ago.

In all those years I have collected I have never been able to find an example of a Dad's Cookie Exhibit card. I just wanted one for a sample back.

Then I get the below. A COMPLETE set of 64! YEP, Mantle, Mays, J. Robinson, Kaline, Drysdale, Williams, Ashburn, Fox, Spahn, Mathews, Berra, Roberts, and other HOFer's included.

For those unfamiliar with the set these were stapled onto a bag of cookies. There are two staple in each card. Making grading a bit of a problem. I am not a grading person, but how would they grade cards that CAME with staple holes? Do they take the staples as a given and then grade on the rest of the card or do they in effect penalize for the staple holes?

Some of these have creases and rips where the card was pulled off the bag, but with all that said I am ecstatic to acquire the set.

For some reason the guy only had the set, no dupes and no album that is noted on the back of the card. Anyone have an album?

Fred

Neat cards. Just a guess but I think they would still deduct for the holes. FYI, I am almost positive I have had one of these, or seen one, without the staple holes. Congrats on your pickups!!

Thanks Leon!

I would be interested in seeing one of these without the staple holes.

Awesome pickup. In my years looking, I have never come across a single one of these either. I figured not many of them had survived. Great cards. Would love to hear where you found them?

Hi Chris:

These actually came out of Vancouver Canada. The guy who had them collected them as a kid and had the entire set. But NO dupes!!

Do you have any of 1955 Postcard backs? If so which players and which back? LMK. I have some of these to trade. PM me.

Fred

Cool find! He must have been a very prolific trader or sold/traded all dupes. Very awesome!! Great start to the November pick-up thread!

Got a couple of nice Bowmans. Looking for more stars from 50's if you have 'em for sale or trade!

Is there a Brooks Robinson in the set ? I collect Brooks and I would need that one! I have never seen those type backs before--great pick up!

Nope. No Brooksie card in the set. Don't know if that is good news or bad news for you! It's always fun to chase another card you need, but these are so rare you would probably never find one if he was in the set! :>)

quitcrab 11-03-2013 02:41 AM

Believe me when I say if Brooks was in the set I would find it! That's what collectors do! I didn't think he was part of this set because I probably would have heard about the card from other Brooks collectors. Thanks for opening my eyes to a set I have never seen... And I see it as a "good thing" that Brooks was not a part of the set ...I see it as a "bad thing" that he was a topps 1967 3 d prototype ... I will never own that one!

I recently purchased a grouping of 57 Topps cards, and would you believe that (unknowingly) included in the lot was one of the "variations", the 57 BAKEP, I have been wanting for years(I just refused to part with the needed money to acquire one). The seller of this lot appears to not be very familiar with cards as most of his sales involved general estate type items and not cards.

Speaking about Brooks Robinson cards, take a look at the thread I started in the Modern Baseball Cards Forum (1980-Present) forum titled 1997 Topps Rookie Reprint Autographs. Brooksie's card is included in a variation you most likely do not have.

I just picked up an uncut sheet of them with the Certified Autographs Gold Foil stamps WITHOUT the autographs.

I am waiting for Topps Experts Al Richter and Dav.e Hornis.h to comment on if they have been seen without the autographs WITH the foil stamp.

Also it is my belief that this sheet has the only cards of Ashburn with the gold foil stamp as his cards were NOT issued autographed because he died before he could sign the cards.

Holy cow, Fred. Jackpot! Those things are just beautiful! I wouldn't be able to take my eyes off of them. I especially love the Braves.

One curiosity though. Most of the players are portrayed with their team name and logo on their hat. Others there is no team name or logo (blacked out). I wonder about the story behind that. Did the set producer have to contact each individual team for permission?

From the looks of it, these would have been printed between '51 and '52. Pafko was a member of the Cubs prior to those two seasons, and the Milwaukee Braves after. Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews are pictured with their team logos, but Don Newcombe is not.

My latest acquisition

I just won this doozy over at Heritage. Paid a bit of a premium over SMR, but worth it for those amazing colors and killer centering. Forget an OC PSA 8...I'll take one of these any day!

Saved-- fun find. I have always viewed it as a minor print defect, of which there are many such back defects in every Topps set. But it has hobby recognition and is therefore a must for every master 57 collector.

Nice 52 high Brian

Hi Bill:

YEAH! I do feel like I hit the jackpot with these! Thanks.

These are the regular issue of the 1959 Exhibit Card set with the Dad's Cookies ad on the reverse. It is not known if Dad's did the back printing or the Exhibit Co. Dad's had nothing to do with the photos. That was up to the Exhibit Card Company. Why they choose to use certain photos without logos while others had them is something we will pobably never know. FYI the card of Newcomb you reference was issued with the Dodgers logo on his cap and jacket in an earlier Exhibit set. He was later traded to the Reds, I believe, and they just airbrushed out the Dodgers stuff and issued him in a plain cap etc., much like Topps has been known to do.

[QUOTE=Exhibitman;1203529]That's a hell of a hit, Fred, congrats!

Thanks Adam! I had been trying for years just to find one (hopefully Ashburn since I collect his stuff), but being an Exhibit collector too these fit right in to my collection. Found it hard to believe the guy had JUST a set. NO dupes!

I don't do grading, but am considering it on these. What is your take if I do so? PSA or SGC? I have heard from others they will not take into account that these were issued with staples, so there can not be any high grades right from the start. Should I just get them authenticated instead of a numerical grade? Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Fred

Thx Al. My switch from hockey cards to baseball cards in 2012 was in the pre-war stuff, Principaly T206 cards. And now, almost 2 years after my introduction, i moved to the goudey cards in pre-war and at the shriners show this month i started to buy Some post-war cards.

At the begining my idea was to only have the Mantle since it is the most iconic post war card and probably 1 of the most iconic of ALL baseball card. But now, my idea changed a little bit i think i will buy other post war card.

I also buyed a 1961 Maris card because i really love the movie 61 :)
I will also probably buy 1 or 2 Jackie robinson also beause i really love the movie :)
And finally i will buy more Mantle cards.
Thx again for the nice word Al

Great pickup Nelson. As I am sure you know, it is tough to find a 1 that is that clean.

Yogi Berra Yankees Shelby Bicycle Premium

4 Attachment(s)
This just back from PSA. For the life of me I can not figure out grading!! This looks great to me.

You will see this soon in the B/S/T forum as I am interested in trading it.

I also have three ads with Yogi for Shelby bikes. One of which has the send away coupon for the Premium and shows it as well!

Never saw this before, but it is listed in the SCD Vintage Catalog.

Exhibitman 11-20-2013 01:24 PM

My guess with some of the photographic premiums is that while they look great, they often have small creases that just kill a technical grade. Not that it will matter for resale--rare is rare.

Rickyy 11-20-2013 02:20 PM

Fred Wow...congrats that's a jackpot...never seen many of those cards...let alone a complete set! I have one slabbed by SGC...got to go back home later and check the acutal grade.

Hi Ricky:

yeah, jackpot is a good word! LMK what grade yours has. I assume from talking to others they do not take into account that they were issued with staples and will not grade them high due to this.

The people who get paid for their opinions would hate those staple holes, which is just another reason not to pay them for their opinion.

Those are fantastic, congrats.

Fred, mine is G-VG card of Elston Howard, but with the staple hole...it did come back a SGC 10 Poor...so I think the staple holes definitely accounted for the down grade...

Hi Ricky:

Thanks for checking on the Dad's cookies card. I assumed they would not take the staple holes into account. Not that big a deal for me because for the most part I do not do grading. But it is good to know what to expect should I ever decide to get them graded.
