Philly Show Pickups and Observations

I had a really fun time at the Philly show on Saturday. Show was extremely busy. I was able to pick up some 50s hits for my sets, along with a few T206 upgrades. Good to see collector friends and the same friendly dealers.

Two quick observations:

1. The line at both the PSA and SGC tables were long. And no, they were not set up together :D
2. I continue to be amazed at the inventory of many of the dealers there. I would say more than a few had a million dollars of inventory in their showcases. Wow!

Great show. What were your pickups/observations?

yea, regarding # 2... the vast majority of ball cards are just not that scarce or rare...any large show you will see dozens of dealers with runs of Mantle cards, Goudeys, 60 stars... plenty of fish !

Great show! So much stuff. I was able to bring my Monster total up to 508 with 13 cards added from the show...and these 2 beauties!

I call 'em "commodity cards"; the supply is always there, the question is price. I try to stay away from them at shows unless they are really cheap, and hunt for esoteric and rare stuff instead. Needless to say, I don't get much at most shows in the last few years.

and there in ..sometimes lies the problem.... You know, I know, he knows, and they know..that superstar cards of major stars..in late 50s thru 60s...are plentiful....

and it does come down to price....and apparently most dealers would rather set up a " museum display " and "play dumb " with the fact that the Kaline/Banks/Killebrew/Brock/..and others., .can and will be found on ebay for way way less

Agree . . shows better for the proverbial needle in a haystack . . . . most cards are plentiful, especially in low grades.

I had a blast. Went with a fellow YouTuber named Mookie Chillson and his buddy Pete. Outside of some smaller purchases, I came away with a fun PC "card" pickup I've had my eye on for a while. I was surprised that it was in the corner of one of the dealer's display case.

I think I got a nice deal for it given how much people are asking for them on eBay.

The new post COVID dealer employs a "707" like mentality. Howevet, unlike 707 whondoesmt need to sell, they are Dollar cost averaging hot cards and trying to keep the market propped up.

I went on Saturday for few hours and had blast time.

I was able to obtain T206 Broad Leaf Dummy Taylor. Cant be any happier.

Couple of notes based on what I see in this thread

Don't know Mookie except by name but from everything I see on line, he's a really good guy

Levi (707) is also a collector of note and is very good with his customers.

Very happy with my pickups. Stuff walked up and I walked around.

Friday was surprisingly busy for this show. Typically Fridays can be quite slow.

Saturday was packed for most of the day and the room had good energy.

Sunday was busy until the very end which again is very unusual for this show. Usually Sundays by noon are a ghost town.

Congrats on the haul. In my entire life I have been to maybe 15 shows and in total I have bought a small fraction of that. Maybe 10%.

Did anyone catch the name of the guys in the 100 row about 3 tables in on the right. They had a sign that said pre 1970s. Their vintage inventory seemed endless. One of the best in show for volume of inventory. tons of tobacco cards.

sounds like about where William Chappell is located and he certainly has the stuff.

I went Friday afternoon and agree with others. It was unusually busy for a Friday. I’m glad to hear both Saturday and Sunday were busy as well.

Picked up this T205 Cobb…

Nice stuff, guys. Shows are fun too; we often forget that. As my friend Vintageball says: "your worst day at a card show is better than your best day at work."
