Red murff. Who woulda thunk it.
 

So I was about to list a 1955 All Star game on ebay, and noticed the scorecard was signed when scanning it.

I looked at the signature and I thought... Red Muell? Red Mull?

Then googled Red Murff, and what a surprise I was in for.

I read his Wiki Page, and had no idea he was.

I now know he threw a no hitter in the minors AND 19 2/3 innings of a 20 inning loss!?! WHAT!

He also discovered Nolan Ryan! What the heck?

I also started connecting the dots, and this looks like a very very early Murff signature.

This game was held in Milwaukee, and less than 8 months later he was signed by Milwaukee as a 35 year old rookie. Hmm

Was this signed at the game?

In 1955 was selected both the Minor League Player of the Year by The Sporting News and Texas League Pitcher of the Year after going 27–11 for the Dallas Eagles, so is it possible Milwaukee invited him to the all-star game festivities to entice him?

Did a fan actually have the foresight to get this thing signed prior to him joining the big league club?

Who Knows?

I am still confused however why he did not pitch more than he did. There are no injuries reported, and he fared well in his 2 lone starts.

He also won a World Series Championship in 57 which is neat for only having 50 innings of big league ball under his belt.

Odd that you should discover and share that great bit of history the exact same day that I , weeping real tears , had P**C list my only Red Murff card , a drop-dead centered gorgeous GAI 1st Graded '57 . We're gonna hafta move this thread over to the post-war side now....and because I mentioned P**C , I'm gonna go make popcorn...

The title of this post got my attention simply because I've heard so many stories about Red through scouts and player development guys. He was very well liked by fellow scouts and a bit of a legend in the scouting fraternity. Neat piece.
