Posted By: JimCrandell
Not right in my opinion to take serious posts and turn them into what punk rock band is best or what the favorite Kinks song is or how you feel about your dog and on and on and on. Not to say that I have not been guilty of this in the past as I have responded to pro-abortion or anti-Reagan or anti-Bush posts.

None of it has a place here--do it in private e-mails or visit another message board.

I'm not too sure why you'd even start this up knowing what it is going to cause. If your wanting to just talk cards, nothing else..then do that...bringing this thread into existance is doing exactly what you say you can't stand, being off-topic. For the most part I think the majority of the threads are hobby-related...a few may stray here or there for more or less humorous reasons...I don't see anything wrong with that. Some people enjoy laughing now and then. If you want to stay on topic by all means do that, but why in the world would you start a thread being as forceful as you sounded with the "go to another message board" type statement? This is exactly the reason there are lurkers that have no desire to post here.

Dave

Posted By: Bob
Jim- I disagree. If a man is pro-choice because he believes a woman has a right to say what happens with her body and that that decision is between her and her God, that doesn't make the man pro-abortion. I personally don't believe in abortion but I don't presume to be judgmental about a woman's right to decide. I wish all the advocates of banning abortions would remember when only the rich and the privileged could get abortions and the alternative for the poor and non-privileged included back alleys, coat hangers and butchers. I also wish the advocates would get on the band wagon and help support legislation for the financial care and nurturing of babies who are born in to intolerable situations whether it be serious birth defects or horrible environments. It seems sometimes that many right to lifers can be very adamant about preventing the abortion of a fetus but once the child is born, not wish to contribute a plug nickel's worth of help for them.
Just my 2 cents.
Bob

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Jim, I would assume that you must be pro-abortion because how else could you claim to know what is in the minds of people that are pro-choice? Frankly, I'm shocked that someone like you could be so conservative and also be pro-choice. I guess you'll be voting for Rudy in the upcoming primaries.

If you're not pro-choice and you're just imagining what people believe that are pro-choice, I'll have to correct you: there are plenty of pro-choice people that are against abortion per se. They just ultimately feel that the decision on what a woman does with her body, no matter if thought to be repugnant, should be her choice and not the choice of a bunch of old white men wearing black robes.

As for Leon's mention of euthanasia, in your mind you would believe that anyone who is for such a thing is also pro-murder. Can you see the distinction?

Posted By: E, Daniel
Jim,

I'm thinking you need to do what you've often remarked to others that find a thread not to their liking....just skip to the next.
And though there maybe something you find interesting or important in the original post or some of the follow up, if the answers fall away or don't get to the points you want to hit on - start a new thread with those specifics in mind.
I understand what you're trying to say, but many on the board obviously have bonds and friendships and the side-notes to the discussions add alot to their enjoyment of the site and the hobby. Me too in fact, and if I could just get a little less strident about issues i feel are important (and there are sooo many of them) there might be a few more smiley faces thrown my way
You too, I get the feeling.
And it snowballs. When people like you more and respect you more (Bruce's major problem unfortunately), they tend to take what you have to say or ask more seriously - and respond with more of the specifics in an attempt to help out on the topic. It's kind of like second grade, you have to earn your stripes all over again. I wish I packed better lunches

Regards
Daniel

Posted By: barrysloate
I understand why some people object to hijacked threads, but please remember we've formed a kind of community on the board, and many of us, even though we may have never met, consider each other friends. And when friends get together, and they sit around and shoot the breeze, conversation tends to digress. Perhaps that is what is going on here- there are many card issues we could all be discussing but there are points in the day when we all just want to have a little light fun. It's easy to say why not just start a thread about the Kinks, but nobody would actually think of doing that.

There are also some people on the board that because of erratic posts have lost some respect, and perhaps those threads are just not taken as seriously as others. What comes around goes around.

Posted By: cmoking
Jeff, I'm talking about threads that are purposelly hijacked for the sole purpose of muddling the waters and changing the subject of the thread, or flooding the thread with posts about other topics so that the original topic is no longer relevant. I'm not talking about friends that accidentally hijack a thread and have a tangential discussion about something else. I'm talking about it being a deliberate act to shut up the original poster.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
King, I don't know that such a thing happens very often out here. In a way, there is natural selection at work here: if a topic is not embraced by a large number of posters it is usually ignored and dies a quick death. If the thread is started by someone who is not embraced by a large number of posters, occasionally hijacking occurs. I find this unfortunate when it comes to anything that Bruce posts because I find him to be incredibly knowledgeable. I also think that his recent thread about the dearth of high-end cards on ebay is a good one and he is correct: I am also frustrated at having to pay a 20% BP on high end cards at the private auctions because, for some reason, sellers would rather net 75% percent than 95% on ebay. As for purposely provocative and obnoxious threads, ultimately, as I noted above, natural selection takes over and the thread is fouled by others.
