Anybody have any pre-1900 Brooklyn photos, cards, etc?

Posted By: Dave
I have come across a vintage pin that was described to me as pre-1900 with a member of the Brooklyn team. I have no way of providing scans. Anybody have any pre-1900 Brooklyn pics that would at least show off uniforms from the time period?? Thanks.

Edited to try and describe...the player is unknown to me. its a picture on the pin of the player from waist up, ball in hand, arm back as if to throw. he has a white hat on with two dark stripes around it...nothing on his jersey..(white)

Posted By: Joe D.
Dave,

I believe this photo was taken in the 1890s.

Its a RPPC I recently picked up on eBay... The print is more modern than the date of the photo (maybe from the 50s?). The seller was nice enough to explain who the company was that made the print - and seemed like a nice enough person - but I still feel his listing was misleading (as to the age of the print). I kept it as a lesson learned.

Posted By: Dave
Dan....I'm not sure what type of pin it is...I have basically no knowledge of pins. It is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. It is also a little scuffed up...not mint condition or anything.

Joe...that would lead me to believe this pin may not be a brooklyn player...with no brooklyn name on jersey or even a letter b....hmmm...I guess unless possibly brooklyn in the 1880's had different uniforms, or plain uniforms with the hats as described above.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
If you can provide us with a scan I'm sure someone here will know right away what it is. Pinbacks from the 1890's are very scarce and it could be worth your while even if it's not a Brooklyn player.

Posted By: Dave
It looks more like a photograph (from what I can remember). And if there ever was anything on the back it's either faded or rubbed off by now...

Posted By: Zach Rice
My first thought when reading the post was the same as Dan's, an 1898 Cameo Pepsin pin. These are much smaller then the size you describe, though. They are 1.25 inches in diameter and have amazing sepia images and a paper backing. Your pin is much larger and I don't think I’ve ever seen a cameo with a non-portrait pose like the one you described (except the team pins of course).

You don't see many pins from the time period you described, let alone ones that size. I just browsed through my Hake and Steckler book and couldn't really find any images that fit the description of the pin mentioned in this post. It is possible that it is something homemade or from an unknown set, I guess. I'd love to see an image of it.

Posted By: Dave
I still haven't been able to get a photo of the pin..but did run across this...from my memory its the same exact hat as the player shown on the pin...can anyone correctly identify this team or even the era for sure?? If I can find out the team with the player on the pin perhaps with a little more detective work I can find out the player...
Sorry...probably should have blown up the pic

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Dave, pinbacks were not invented until 1896 so it can't be earlier than that if it is a celluloid pinback.

edited to add that I just looked it up to make sure and Whitehead and Hoag patented the process for making a celluloid pinback in 1894.
