Is this 1971 topps Gil Hodges autograph real?

I got It for 10 cents this morning at the flea market along with a few other autographs out of a dealers box of random cards. The 1967 Al Jackson and 1988 Fleer Robert Parish are legit that were in the box....what are the chances this is real? I don't want to waste my money on PSA if it's not.

Your thoughts and opinion welcome..as it seems way to good to be true !!

gnaz01 11-02-2013 12:22 PM

Nope :(

HRBAKER 11-02-2013 01:32 PM

Real, ...........bad.

Scott Garner 11-02-2013 01:39 PM

No!

jeffo81 11-02-2013 02:10 PM

You have to remember topps used the same facsimile autograph on the 1971 topps as they did for the 1956 topps...they used the same one for 15 years. His autograph changed as he got older. You cannot compare the facsimile on the 1971 card to what his autograph looked like in the late 1960's till his death in 1972...it changed a lot. - auto's before his death look a lot like this one.

Lordstan 11-02-2013 02:23 PM

Jeff,
I don't think anyone's opinion is based on comparing this signature with the one on the card. Unfortunately for you this signature is a really bad fake.

Also for your information, his signature in 1971 looked a lot more like the one printed on the card than poorly attempted fake on this one.

khkco4bls 11-02-2013 04:26 PM

Not even close

Gary Dunaier 11-02-2013 10:27 PM

Just for the sake of comparison, does anyone have an authentic 1971 Hodges signature they can post here?

Here's mine from the mid 50's.

If PSA charged ten cents to examine the card you will have wasted twenty cents on it.

UnVme7 11-03-2013 09:20 AM

Well, at the end of the day, it was a nice 10 cent gamble. Don't blame you for trying. If I was unsure, I would've bought it for 10 cents too

My question would not be if the autograph is real (Its not) but based on your scan who is the diabolical individual who shot Hodges through the head ? Was that card anywhere near the "grassy knoll" in Dallas ???? Looks like a bullet hole and a fake autograph.....:)

No bullet--it was a shaving cream pie.

Could be .....but my OTHER theory is that Tupac Shakur had that card in his pocket on Sept 7th 1996 while waiting for the traffic light to change on the corner of Flamingo Road and Koval in Las Vegas

Off topic yes , BUT great question ....I have never seen one , if someone has one an image would be greatly appreciated.

As a side bar that I find really , really strange ...Right before he was killed a Las Vegas cab driver recognized him in the car and while they were stalled in traffic asked if he could take his picture , He obliged and almost exactly after taking his photo he was minutes later was on his way to the hospital. He never asked for an autograph

So I had to send in the Hodges just to find out what PSA would say and it came back as DO NOT PROCESS. What does that mean? If they think it’s fake don’t they put AUTH?

Duluth Eskimo 02-28-2019 09:34 PM

Are you fricking kidding me. Do you want to buy some ocean front property as well? That was probably the worst Hodges fake anyone on this forum has seen and you still paid PSA to tell you the same thing. As the saying goes, “a fool and his money are soon parted”.

Yastrzemski Sports 03-01-2019 06:12 AM

That moment when someone asks you for your opinion and then does the exact opposite.

Well, I’m glad I didn’t listen to all the people here saying it was the “worst” forgery ever, “buy oceanfront Property” etc.

I saw another 1971 Auto that was so similar I couldn’t believe it,
So I had to send it in. It was worth the Gamble to send to PSA considering the other 5 autographs I got from that .10 cent box were legit.

So, I called PSA and asked what the deal was with “do not process” label it came back with and why if it was such an aweful forged card as 100 percent of the people here are saying why did it not come back AUTH?....which as you all know is for forged cards.

PSA told me it was deemed “do not process” because they could not determine one way or the other if it was real... so maybe it’s not as off as everything thinks??? And PSA did not charge me for it !! I’m sure if they thought it was fake those greedy buggers would have gladly taken my money.

What’s your experience been in these situations with “do not process” cards
They can’t determine?

Thanks

“Surely you can’t be serious?” says the pilot. You’re right, the pie in the sky does taste good. Keep on eating my friend. This is exactly why the wait time on encapsulation is so long.

I would trust the members here before I trust what a TPA says, especially after that T206 scandal last fall. A couple weeks ago, a card I needed for my project came up on eBay. PSA’s quick opinion service was unable to render an opinion, but another member I showed it to didn’t like it, so I passed. He’s been at this for 50+ years; no one at any TPA has that level of experience.

If you want my honest opinion, the amount of hoops that you have to jump through for that to be real (flea market vendor had no clue he was sitting on one of the rarest signed cards out there, Hodges had two drastically different signatures at the same time, that, to use your words “maybe it’s not as off as everyone thinks”), I would not want it in my collection. I’d never feel comfortable with how different it is from other, authentic examples, or that so many folks here don’t like it. I understand that you said other cards from that vendor came back good, but mixing in a few good signatures with forgeries is a tactic I’ve seen used before.
