September Pick Up Thread

4 Attachment(s)
Five days into the month and no pickup thread yet? I guess I'll start one.

I picked up this Winter 1947 Puerto Rican Winter League scorebook to add to my collection. Several negro league players are spread around throughout the scorebook. This was on the eve of Robinson breaking the barrier just a few months later. There were six teams in the league: Caguas-Guayama, Ponce, Mayaguez, Aquadilla, San Juan and Santurce. This scorebook was the official team scorebook of Caguas-Guayama. They would go on to play in the championship playoff against Ponce to end the season. They also played a game against the Yankees. Some of the recognizable names include: Willard Brown (won triple crown), Dan Bankhead, Buster Clarkson, Monty Irvin, Larry Doby (Dobby in the scorebook), Alomar (Sandy Sr's dad), Hairston, Pedro Cepeda (Orlano's dad), Colmbre and others.

I love this Wright & Ditson baseball, both for its graphics and for its place in the story of “the evolution of the baseball,” which has been a key theme of my collecting for 25 years.

Some background: In 1884, George Wright, former star of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, became an owner of the Boston franchise of the Union Association of Base Ball Clubs, a rival major league that named Wright & Ditson as the exclusive supplier of its official ball. When the Union Association folded after its inaugural season, so did Wright & Ditson's standing as a supplier of major league baseballs. The company was acquired some time prior to 1892 by Spalding, which continued to make baseballs using the Wright & Ditson name.

On a separate note, if you have a nice example of a Heydler ball from 1931-1933, please let me know.

I love that "kitschy" kind of stuff!

perezfan 09-05-2018 06:17 PM

Agree.... Those goofy graphics are so great, and really capture the mid-century era.

Wonderful pickups Chris!

khkco4bls 09-05-2018 07:49 PM

That baseball is awesome. My collecting was from 1800s thru the 1950s. But 19th century is my favorite. Great piece.

Bumpus Jones 09-06-2018 09:09 AM

Thanks, fellas. They are cute aren't they;)

jimm 09-06-2018 09:29 AM

Picked up this nice example of a 1964 Nellie Fox game used bat when he was a member of the Houston Colt 45's. Bat is a C 12 model--is 34 inches in length and currently weighs 32.6 oz which is only .4 short of what I believe the original order weight was.

Picked up a program from Carl Yastrzemski’s first career game and hit, April 11, 1961. The seller also included a lot of old Boston newspapers from 1967 pennant and Yaz milestones/retirement. Not sure what to do with the newspapers but the program was high on my interest list for a great price!

Picked up these oddball Ted Williams weights.:) The red 5LBer is my favorite.

Not sure what time frame these Sears, Roebuck and Co weights comes from so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Early to mid 60s most likely. Sears signed Ted Williams in 1962 to endorse their wide range of "outdoor sports" products after his retirement. So his name/signature is on Sears branded tents, guns, bicycles, weight sets, fishing equipment and of course, Sears model baseball equipment.

Here's a short vintage SI article about his endorsement signing:

I have a Sears Ted Williams endorsed fielders mitt that I deployed after my Rawlings glove was stolen in 1973.
Based on your pictures, I would actually guess late 1960's or early 1970's.
I seem to remember these when shopping at Sears. Use old Sears catalogues to fill in the time gap, just as an FYI

mr2686 09-08-2018 04:04 AM

I'd agree with late 60's, early 70's. I had the same weights that I got in 74 when I started High School. Kept those darn things for 30 years, until I just didn't want to move them again.

I recently picked up this 1971 Giants vs Pirates NLCS program. It is considered to be the rarest Championship Series program. I have no idea how that was determined. Prices on these range from $400 to $750 which essentially excluded it form my want list. I was lucky enough to land this one at a fraction of the cost from an eBay seller who had no idea of its rarity. I also added four Malcolm Emmons 8X10s of Manny Sanguillen, Dock Ellis, and Bob Robertson.

perezfan 09-10-2018 10:17 PM

Great stuff!

I could tell those were Emmons' images before I even read your text. Classic style! He is the greatest of all the post-war photographers, IMHO.

Nice pickups!

Recent pickup 1971 Mets game used flannel jersey, worn by Frank Estrada who played one game and was traded to the Angels as part of the Nolan Ryan trade. 1971 was the last year the Mets wore flannels. The New York was stripped off when it was sent to the minors.

I had a bat of some Giant I wanted autographed when the guy was on a rehab assignment at AAA. Davy invited me into the clubhouse. My buddy says that’s why he didn’t make a good manager....too nice! :p

The box is in sad condition however, I have seven of the tins (1 black and 6 white). If anyone has a tin (black or white), please let me know, I would love to have the full box.

The Larry Doyle "A Fan for a Fan" will go nicely with my Christy Mathewson and Hal Chase, now I need only the Cobb - sigh...

Maybe my new favorite photo in my collection. 1910-ish relaxed photo of T206 players Billy Sullivan and Boss Schmidt. I wish I could enlarge it; it's almost like a work of art. The detail is unreal!

This photo can be enlarged. If you have it scanned at a very high resolution (1200 dpi or more) a good quality enlargement can be made. I also know a company that can turn a scan into a silver halide print of any size. They are pricey, but their work is excellent.

Bpm0014 09-17-2018 01:25 PM

This photo can be enlarged.

I just meant right here in this thread hahaha. It came up pretty small...

Bicem 09-17-2018 03:29 PM

Al and I both liked that photo so much we put it on the cover of our last auction catalog even knowing it wasn't a high dollar item.

Bpm0014 09-17-2018 04:40 PM

It cost me over $500 for a picture of 2 (relatively) no-name players. My wife most certainly considers it a high dollar item! Hahahahaha :D

Bicem 09-17-2018 05:31 PM

Ha, relatively speaking.

Great, great photo.

Notebook

Always on the lookout for these old time notebooks/tablets. Great and affordable way to acquire nice shots and items of some of the game`s stars. Enclosed is actually the 2`nd one of these tablets, some damage but certainly in my ballpark! Love the fact it contains 2 Black Sox, Hap Felsch/Ray Schaulk and some guy named Ty Cobb.

Early Football pickups today....

2 Attachment(s)
Guys...………..I've been patiently waiting over a month for a local estate auction to take place, as there was some pretty decent stuff previewed. Among other items, I picked up these 2 football items.

The Army pennant was from the Soldier Field official dedication game vs. Navy in front of 110,000 fans.

The Spalding football jersey is from 1905 (single year patch) and I've found a very similar (if not identical) jersey worn in early Vanderbilt football team pictures.

Thanks for looking...…...Matt

Huysmans 09-20-2018 05:32 PM

Those are both killer items!
