This sale had a minimum of 1,000 balls signed by everybody ranging from Cheech & Chong to Babe Ruth.

Some other I took photos of

And I couldn't pass this up for the price...no COA...everything looks good from my amateur eye

The glove is just retail Spalding Maris edition, but with ink from these two guys on it...

OK...like I said, I knew that stat has a less than pristine rep, but I didn't know if it automatically ='d phony.

Educate me for a second then...How does that scam work...does STAT just certify whatever people send them as authentic, or do companies like them actually produce the forgeries, slap a bogus COA on it and sell to uneducated consumers?

canjond 08-02-2015 01:38 PM

Every auto posted so far is fake.

Completely agree on the Ruth/McCarthy, and the Anson...the Jackie/Satchell looks suspect as well...what makes you so sure on the others? Is it as simple as if one is a fake, they all are mentality?

I guess a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then, but this looks like all Roaches Corner stuff, with Ted Taylor COA's and all.......

You should have seen this guys house. Ruth & Marilyn Monroe 'Autographed' lithos all over...a plaque with a supposed lineup card from the 1934 Japan barnstorming tour w/ Ruth & everybody else that said it came with a COA, but it looked xeroxed, even through the glass.

Had some REALLLY nice art though...original John Lennon pieces and others in the $10k-$15k range

I didn't look at all the items, but 99% of the baseball items I did see were fake. Looks like he spent a lot of money with Coaches Corner buying fakes.

Just in general, the Anson ball is beat to hell but some how the signature is fine and also perfectly placed on the sweetspot.

The Robinson / Paige ball signatures are super wavy and there's no style to them. To me that equals the signatures are drawn and not signed. But besides that, they also look fake.

Completely agree on the Anson...the other thing about that piece is it was about 60-70% the size of an actual baseball (as noted on the COA)...but you nailed it...the condition of the ball not matching the sig is the giveaway.

The Speaker is still intriguing to me...the only part of it that looks goofy to me is the tail of the 'i' in Tris, which is a little sharper of a point than the sigs on the PSA page, which are all pretty smooth...the 'p' doesn't quite match either...OK, I'm no longer intrigued

Would have been friggin cool to get a Speaker ball for $180 though, right?

Exactly, Mark.

All Roach's Corner crap!!!

thetruthisoutthere 08-02-2015 04:34 PM

I don't feel sorry for people who own crap like that.

No...but I do feel a tad bit sorry for all the people that buy the things that guys like that own when they die because most of them have COAs that give Average Joes the illusion of safety.

I may stop back by there on my way to work in the AM just to take pics of some of the Babe Ruth 'autos' that were hanging on the wall (that had a $5k+ asking price on them) to share with you all...they were just super-obvious laser printer fakes.

Looks like that trip won't be necessary...this was one of them...nice call on the CC guys

That was an easy "call."

Lee Trythall and Scott Malack (Roach's Corner) have been selling forgeries for over twenty years. There are hundreds of threads on the internet about Coach's Corner and the forgeries they sell every month.

RobDerhak 08-02-2015 09:34 PM

Naive question of the day...how can they keep doing it for so long w/o anybody pressing charges? I know they aren't exactly ISIS in their level of threat to the general public or anything, but still, you'd think this is a large enough industry, and enough influential people are collectors that it wouldn't be allowed to persist or be as out in the open as it is...

Because only the "hobby" cares.

The same way the "Florida" forgeries continue to infect the hobby.
