Framed Negro League Postcard on Ebay

I neither bid on, nor won this, as I was unsure of the player's identity or the item's authenticity. Could this have been a significant player? Did someone get a sweet deal?

Neat photo but my guess (and I hope I am wrong) is that it remains unknown.

Don't know who it is or if it's from a Negro League team, but for $25 you can't go too wrong.

Heavily trimmed postcard of an unknown player. Probably worth less than a heavily trimmed postcard of a non-star MLB player.

Agreed, unless it can be identified, which judging from the price it sold for I don't think he will be identified or it would have went for a lot more.

You never know about this stuff. I have sold some old team photos with black players, then gotten sick to my stomach later when I thought I might have i.d.'d a famous player. It can't hurt to buy things like this and just stash them away.

My first thought, was that it COULD be either Bill Foster, or Ben Taylor (both HOFers). But really hard to tell.

mannybb24 02-02-2014 01:53 PM

I would rule out Foster since he was a lefty and the guy pictured is a righty.

And actually Taylor was a lefty as well.

Probably would never ID the postcard but still kinda neat. I was watching it as well but completely forgot about till it was too late. I think for $25 bucks you couldn't go wrong...

It does sort of look like Willie Foster. You could probably narrow down the age of the postcard, based on markings on the back.

Saw that one when it was listed, not Taylor or Foster. Unknown..........

It's Josh Gibson. Or Joe Jackson. Definitely one or the other.

Been looking at this postcard for a few days for ways to identify it. Probably impossible, but....

.... the uniform letters are strange, the L on the sleeve looks like a place for numbers like the 1912 Oakland Oaks uniforms, so I dismissed it as that. In the close up photo of the uniform with the letters on the chest, "AC", the letters A and C seemed spaced far apart. But in the close up of the image; I think I can make out the outline of a "B", that may have been torn off by a head-first slide, but not re-sewn. If so, ABC, the Atlanta Black Crackers, makes sense. Maybe I'm delusional.

slidekellyslide 02-04-2014 09:53 PM

Anytime I see the letters "A" and "C" on a baseball uniform I think Athletic Club.

pariah1107 02-05-2014 09:02 AM

.... "Athletic Club" yes, or if just "AC", it could stand for Atlanta Cubs (ha,ha). Even if the letter "B" was on the uniform and it once read "ABC", it could just stand for Arkansas Baptist College, or another HBCU. Without another player PC to compare it, any markings, or correspondence on the back it's near impossible. It's fun to ponder, and no one is hurt by offering reasonable theories. Great looking PC.
