The Library's rare Honus Wagner baseball card will be on view. The legendary card was distributed with Sweet Caporal cigarettes, ca. 1910, until Wagner had it pulled from circulation. Speculation as to why abounded until his granddaughter set the record straight in 1992: "[H]e always had a wad of chewbacca in his mouth, and he wasn't against tobacco at all. His concern was he didn't want children to have to buy tobacco in order to get his card.... That's the fact behind it. It wasn't that he didn't get paid for it, or that he was against tobacco, he just didn't want children to have to buy tobacco at a young age in order to get his cards." The card and other baseball memorabilia are preserved in a scrapbook within the Goulston Collection, housed in the Library's George Arents Collection on Tobacco.

Here is a listing of the current exhibitions at NYPL:

<a href="http://www.nypl.org/events/exhibitions.cfm</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.nypl.org/events/exhibitions.cfm</a>

I called the NYPL to confirm.

Posted By: Trae R.
Dave,

I was at the LOC in February this year and they no longer allow you to view the cards in person, from what I understand. The woman I spoke to said I would have to view the cards online. Major bummer.

I've not specifically answered your question though. I'm not sure if they have a Wagner or not. If they do, it's not shown in the T206 set gallery on the LOC website.

http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/S?ammem/bbcards:@FIELD(CALL+@1(13163+18))

---
"There ain't much to being a ballplayer, if you're a ballplayer."
-Honus Wagner

Posted By: Dave Hornish
It would be nice if NYPL showed their Wagner's back....ah well. Not bad for a 1! Now, does the LOC have Carl Sandberg's T206 collection? I believe I read somewhere that they do but I also thought they had a Wagner. Methinks a Wagner census is in order!
