Topps Transcedent cards

Last night saw a Gehrig "common' sell for about $60. Not much for a 1 of 65. The high priced autos are sitting on eBay as far as I can tell. A little surprised that the Omar Vizquel auto listed for $14,999 wasn't snatched up the first day. Seems like a steal.

You joke about Vizquel, but last year there were two Venezuelan oil tycoons buying all his limited 1/1, 1/5, 1/10 cards for THOUSANDS, bidding each other up in an ego contest. Check worthpoint if you have an account. If you had the first one on eBay, it went for a ton. The second one fell off a cliff, and the third would sell for peanuts.

Grocery stores are empty - what's left have insanely inflated prices - and these "tycoons" are jacking up the price of a baseball card instead of giving back to their struggling country.

I'm a diehard Indians fan, and loved watching Omar play growing up. He was a magician. His stuff shouldn't be worth any more than the next borderline HoFer.

I hate this Transcendent crap.

I believe not just Vizquel but also Galarraga were involved in those bidding wars.

Also, I would wager Topps Transcedent will become Topps most profitable product of 2016. Usually these super high end products do incredibly well for the companies in terms of both sales and profits.

Even at 65 cases at original list price of $27K/box, which dropped to $22K before selling out, Topps would only gross $1.75M. They print about 15K cases of Draft at $1K per case, which grosses $15M. Maybe on a per-unit basis the most profitable %-wise, but by no means Net Profit.

Rich Klein 01-07-2017 07:14 PM

When you figured out your cost, did you include the cost of autographs and relics? Just curious. In many of these cases, the autograph cost for Topps is the same for this as for their lower end products.

I will rephrase this to say, I would wager this is the biggest percentage profit Topps makes on any issue

No, I was just nitpicking. I'm a literal kind of guy. ;-)

Even though there were only 65 signers in this, they charge a bunch more for autographs on the open market than just drafted nobodies. Topps could pay the draft prospects $10k to sign 2000 autos or Hall of Famers $5K to sign 65 of them. Then you've got to add in the cost of the cut signatures (of which probably 10 cost $5K each) and then the cost of locking in Kris Bryant to show up at a party and hobnob with the guests.

You could have taken the $20,000 and bought an autographed Ruth/Gehrig ball. I just don't get it on any level.

And if for some reason your dream was to have a George Washington autograph, you could have bought this nice piece (rather than a cut up piece of crap) and had money left over to go to Hawaii for a few weeks.

I participated in a few of the group breaks. It was like buying a lottery ticket, but with a better payout when I lost. I did end up with a Jimmy Carter 1/1, what he has to do with baseball, I dont know

Snapolit1 01-08-2017 09:12 AM

I get the group break lottery ticket aspect of it. Maybe that's 75% or more of the allure.
I am sure you can but an autographed Jimmy Carter book on ebay for $30, like much of what they built up to be a huge deal.

Republicaninmass 01-08-2017 09:18 AM

But it's in a really neat 1/1 frame!

The kris bryant 1/1 65 years of topps were great. I was only playing trying to get the 1952 card. Rumors it was pulled, but I havent seen a scan

Snapolit1 01-08-2017 09:32 AM

A Republican in Mass got a Jimmy Carter autograph. Insert joke here.

Bet it's worth "peanuts"

swarmee 01-08-2017 10:41 AM

He keeps it in a bag under his carpet... ;-)

The 1952 was pulled recently. It was posted on Blowout in one of the threads.

Republicaninmass 01-08-2017 11:53 AM

I had it posted that it had been pulled, no scan or link to the actual card though

Thanks for the link, not as nice I would have thought. Some of the others, 71 topps and 87 topps looked great

KingFisk 01-08-2017 02:47 PM

The name box looks funny, probably because the dimensions are different from a real 52. Agreed, kind of a miss there.

Was it signed "Jimmy Carter" or "J Carter?" He mostly signs "J Carter," first initial only.

Republicaninmass 01-08-2017 05:55 PM

More like "J Cart" the display is quality though...26k, I would have been heartbroken
