Who's got the best raw t206 set

3 Attachment(s)
With my raw set nearing completion, I was wondering what I need to do to be considered the best raw set. I have ex Cobbs, a nice Magie(middle of the bottom row in pic), both O'Hara and Demmitt, and nice Youngs. My average grade for commons is vg-ex with several ex+. Since the start I didn't want any back problems or paper loss, so there is zero back problems. Sure I'm not close but where do I stand?

Leon 09-15-2011 04:19 PM

wow

Those are really nice.....As for your question, I have no idea.

novakjr 09-15-2011 04:33 PM

I think "best raw set" is kind of a ridiculous designation... Raw or graded, all collections should be valued on the same scale. After all graded cards, at their core, are still raw cards. Or at the very least, once were, and still could be again... There's a handful of graded sets that are just absolutely gorgeous.

Anyways, I've never been one for competing or comparing whose stuff is better. BUT I will say, that's one fine looking set you've got going there. As far as t206 sets go, that is not only impressive, but inspiring as well.

The best I can put it is to announce a new show for the fall season..............

Scott L. 09-15-2011 05:27 PM

Those are just sick. Wonkaticket's raw T206's are ridiculous as well. Not sure if he has a "complete" set though. He's shown them here I believe. They will also make your jaw drop.

AndyG09 09-15-2011 05:30 PM

Most impressive, Doug! How long did it take you to put those beauties together? They sure look sharp next to each other in plastic pages. Thanks for sharing!

Best,

Andy

There are a good number of sets out there that if they were graded today would range between 4 to 7 and have a good number of tough backs in them because they were put together with no attention paid to backs, just needed to be clean and crease free.

tbob 09-15-2011 06:04 PM

Very nice Doug! We'll never know who has the best graded raw T206 set. I know mine is (-Big 4) excellent throughout with no creases but I am sure there are several exmt or even nrmt sets out there.

calvindog 09-15-2011 06:09 PM

Doug, nice set. As for a raw T206 set, I was meeting with a lawyer in NYC last year and saw some baseball card memorabilia around his office and inquired if he was a collector. He then pulled out a complete raw T206 set (minus just the Wagner). It was in near mint condition. I thought the cards would easily grade 7s. I asked him why he didn't grade them and he said he simply had no interest. Later on he sent me a scan of his green Cobb which he had gotten graded -- it came back a 7.

It was unreal. The guy was in an average law firm, making average money but was a huge card collector in the 70s. He bought the entire set NM for like 30K or something like that. Oh and he had a complete NM 33 Goudey set as well in his office. I was dizzy when I left.

vintagerookies51 09-15-2011 07:29 PM

Not raw, but in 2004 Brian Seigel had a T206 set where all the cards were graded either PSA 8 or 9, including the trimmed Wagner. But obviously he sold it

Cardboard Junkie 09-15-2011 09:28 PM

Breathtaking!

Really very nice set! I have 518 of them but you have mine beat to shit, with only a couple of exceptions. PS I too avoid off center and any back damage. Mine too are beautifully raw! dave. How many do you have and what biggies are you missing?

E93 09-15-2011 10:22 PM

Doug,
That looks like a beautiful set. Mine is also mostly raw. I got the HOFs graded a couple of years ago and they averaged about EX 5s.
JimB

wrapperguy 09-15-2011 10:41 PM

Mercy! That is a gorgeous set. My set is raw but all I wanted was an example of each card so I have back damage on some and some creasing. But seeing yours makes me wonder why I spend all that money on commons or fair-good examples.

Wayne 09-15-2011 11:02 PM

Beautiful collection

Better than mine. I am missing 88 cards and I have worked on it for 7 years. Mine is also mixed with graded cards. I like my prewar to show some age

Thanks for the compliments guys. I started in january of 08, so almost 4 years now. I have 500 cards so I'm missing just 21. 4 southerns, a couple minors and some low end HOFers. My O'Hara looks ok but does have a pinhole if anyone can upgrade me. Demmitt is vg'ex and so is elberfeld wash. Having a hard time with the Dahlen, Brooklyn.

peterb69 09-16-2011 04:57 AM

Wow, really nice set. I prefer raw as well as it seems they are more personal then slabbed cards. Maybe because you can touch an smell them vs. picking up a plastic case.

Did you buy these all raw? Or did you release some from their plastic prison?

Phillies*phan 09-16-2011 05:00 AM

A few of the tougher ones were graded. Elberfeld, and the magie was just on ebay. I could here him sigh when he was cracked out :D

Tim Fritz 09-16-2011 08:00 AM

Awesome looking near set. Makes me think I should take mine out of the individual protectors and put them in pages.

caramelcard 09-16-2011 09:58 AM

I have a raw set that I've been upgrading, and/or adding tougher backs to for many years. It's still not as nice as yours. It takes such a long time for me cuz it's really just a back burner project. I figure I'll just keep upgrading it....forever.

Very nice accomplishment! Raw cards are more fun in my opinion.

Nice, Doug!!

Damn, Jeff, I'd love to flip through a NM set!

dstraate 09-16-2011 02:10 PM

Pretty incredible. Mine are all raw too, and I think on an academic grading scale, I'd have you beat as mine are straight A's.

ruth-gehrig 09-16-2011 06:53 PM

Very nice looking set!

Great looking cards. Here is a decent looking starter set.

Raw sets need a beautiful box!
T-206 Box
My father-in-law has sold about a dozen of these now to Net54 members.

Doug - beautiful set. 90% of my set will be raw too.

2dueces 09-17-2011 02:26 PM

That is a sweet set. As for who has the best? I'm sure there are dozens of collectors under the Net54 radar that have T206 set. Yours sure is a beauty!

T206 "raw" sets

Doug
Great looking set.....great thread.

I don't claim to have the best....however, my two "raw" T206 sets are very unique.

My all-SOVEREIGN set is 100% complete with 402 different cards. In addition, the 6 super-prints with their rare SOVEREIGN 460 backs are included in this set.
It ranges from Vg to Ex....and, only the Johnson. Cobb, Matty, and Chance shown here are graded.

My all-PIEDMONT set comprises of 518 cards (missing only the "big 4"). It ranges from Vg to Ex/Mt......and, it is "raw" (except for Baker).
Furthermore, I have arranged the cards in the album by Series (150, 350, 460 and Southern Leaguers).

Beautiful set you have going there Doug !!!!!!!! Amazing, thanks for sharing that with us.

I have all of mine graded, except for 2 raw ones, incase I get the urge to touch or smell them :D

Raw or graded, I just love these cards !!!!

As someone already mentioned, also, you can always get to crackin' if you collect graded and decide you want them to be raw.......and there's no additional fee to do it either :p

Sincerely, Clayton

Although all my caramel cards are slabbed, almost none of my tobacco sets are (205, 206, 207, etc.) As far as suggesting to those who have a graded set, breaking out the T206 set, I shudder to think about the wasted cost of 524 (?) x $10= $5240!!!!!!!!!!

It wasn't so much a suggestion to crack a set, but more a suggestion that there really shouldn't be a line drawn between graded and raw sets, because at it's core, they're still just t206 sets..

pgellis 09-18-2011 04:30 PM

The problem is that if you ever have to sell them. Not if you ever want to sell them, but if you have to sell them. It is much easier to sell cards nowadays on the internet when already graded.
I know that most people say that they don't care, because they will "never sell their cards", but in these times, I have seen several collectors sell part of their collections.

So, if you bust them out, you will not get the best return on your investment.

Not always the case. If the card is undergraded or has better eye appeal than than the grade, then breaking it out and selling raw often results in a better price than if left in the slab.

Come on...........I have purchased several great looking raw cards that were "guaranteed unaltered".....then submitted to come back without a grade. You can NEVER guarantee a card to grade from one day to the next, unfortunately......

jp1216 09-19-2011 01:14 PM

I think if anyone had to sell a raw T206 set - the cost to have each card graded/authenticated by PSA/SGC would be money well spent. Raw for enjoyment - graded for resale.

snider4prez 09-19-2011 02:26 PM

Well first off I would like to say GREAT T206 sets everyone. This set is what starts most people into collecting pre-war cards including myself. My first T206 was a Jennings Port in EX condition for $11 (still have that card today). As far as who has the best raw set, well as stated here I would have to say that is imposable to know. I personally know of 2 different sets in Ex-Nm minus Wagner's that are both completely raw. So I guess you can never be positive who has the best, that's what the registries are for right, who has the biggest and best.

As far as to grade or not to grade, to crack or not to crack. I only grade cards that are additions to partial sets that I had bought that where already graded. I have been thinking about grading the whole collection because of what was stated here already. If something ever happened to me my family would be able to sell the collecting faster and get a better return on the collecting. I am thinking of it like insurance for the collecting (to insure they get the most money they can, as fast as they can). I know with the price I will be spending on grading the cards I could just get more cards but they just look so pretty in those cases, plus when I share them with my sons and friends I don't have to worry about them mishandling the cards or bending the binder pages. Just my thoughts on how I collect graded and raw cards at the same time. They both have there cool factors to them.
Trevor

Finally figured out my scanner and posted my whole set on image event. Please feel free to view and comment. Also, if anyone can help to fill a spot or upgrade any cards please let me know. Thanks and enjoy, Doug.

Howe’s Hunter 10-10-2011 12:21 PM

First off, fantastic collection.

As I'm looking through all that "raw-ness", I just sort of go "wow". But I do have a question. Looking through the cards, I see the holes left for the card you still need in a high grade, but you show only one Lundgren, and that is the Chicago version, but no KC and no space for the KC version near the Chicago version. Am I missing something?

Phillies*phan 10-10-2011 12:59 PM

Yes, there is an explanation. The checklist I am using has all the major leaguers in the front. Then the minors and the southerns are last. Lundgren KC is in the minor section.

Not if that T206 is a Wagner, and I'm not talking about Heinie either. If it is ole Hans, I'll just start calling you Mr. Holmes:D

Pretty funny though Scott.

scottglevy 10-11-2011 06:08 AM

The nicest raw set that I've heard of (never seen, but a very reliable source told me about it) resides with a southern gentleman. It's missing the toughest several cards but generally would grade solidly between a 6 - 8.

I have also seen several near-sets 'in the raw' that would grade between a 2 and 4.

Leon 10-11-2011 07:19 AM

disagree

I politely disagree. I enjoy seeing other folks cards and collections. I hope as many board members as possible will show them. If you don't want to, that is fine, but I hope no one will rain on other folks parades. There is a difference between bragging and sharing. I show a ton of cards but am not bragging. There is always someone that has something better. And collecting, is about gathering things. If we don't show what we gather then I think it takes part of the fun out of it. Just my opinion and everyone is welcome to their own. I will have to start a "show me" thread today!! I love seeing everyone's cards....and a big THANKS to those folks that do share.

Phillies*phan 10-11-2011 07:29 AM

Thank you Leon. I don't know of anyone around where I live that would enjoy seeing the set as much as Net54. It's tough to put so much work into making something and not be able to show someone what you've done. This thread was started to show everyone and see where I stand. Sounds I like I have a little ways to go but I will always be trying to make it better. I think it's also nice for people just starting out to see what's possible.
