1992 Topps Grand Slam Celebration(?)

Anyone know what this was?

I recently discovered a type of pack of 1992 identical to the standard 41-card jumbos, but without the price on the front, and with 2 gold stickers - one saying there is gold card inside (making it the only 1992 Topps pack variety with a 1-per-pack Gold insertion rate), and one saying "Limited Grand Slam Celebration Item".

Nothing else was in the pack - so was the pack itself the limited item?

Any help would be appreciated.

Nothing special, it was just more junk wax advertising to make the addition of a gold card seem like a great item. At least they are better than base.

Dylan might have more to add. I think these were later packs after the huge failure of the Topps gold winners from the scratch off game. The market flooded with gold “winner” cards as the game was beatable by simply using a flashlight and every one was a winner. The redemptions were printed like wildfire as it was impossible to lose.

The plain gold cards were more in demand as they still were overprinted by the standard of today but not of 92.The chance of getting a plain gold was a draw to buyers as they were distributed in the set form.

I think the fact that you got 1 gold per pack was a very big deal at the time. Pulling 1 per box was rough for such a huge set. Gold Winners' value was dropping with all the cheating going on the Match The Stats game cards. Of course, these packs would only be a big deal if the release of them preceded the news of Topps Gold factory sets.

Its also my understanding that the dark back game cards are found in these, which suggests this was a later release.

Yep - when I opened it I found 3 dark-backed game cards - only ones I've ever come across in packs. Also got a Gold Kirk Gibson and the Thome rookie.

From the end of my quest to collect anything listed for Topps in the SCD Catslog through 1994

But do you have a Winners master set with all of the variations?

It will give 1991 Topps a run for its money.

The 91 set cured me in regards to Topps variants. :) After that I stuck to catalog or PSA recognized variations. I did originally start doing Heritage variations but quit that after 2011 because it got ridculous

Because I did variants for my Topps sets 48 and 51 to 91, Bowman 48 to 55, Fleer 59 to 2007 ( there are whole lot of Fleer baseball related sets from 63 to 80 with a boatload of variants), I ran out of gas. :(

Also did all the Conlon sets 83 to 95 and their variants and prototypes.

I needed better more limited parameters way back when

Starting to wrap up now
