a 1948 Chicago Cubs jersey?? What is this?

Guys..................So, a friend of mine has owned this 'Cubs' jersey for many years, acquiring it from an old guy who supposedly used it in the minors somewhere in Missouri or Arkansas back around c.1950ish. He claimed the jersey was handed down from the parent club, the Cubs. The pants and stir-ups are also with the jersey and the jersey's tagged '1 48' inside the left front tail. The jersey looks great with a real nice Cubs patch and appears to be of vintage manufacture, but.....

The problem I have is obviously the manufacturer is incorrect for a true Cubs jersey from 1948, as I believe it should be made by Wilson and issued by May and Halas sports equipment from Chicago....and it should (most likely) have a player name chain stitched in the neck.

So what the heck is this? Is it an older, vintage replica? It's definitely not 'Cooperstown Collection' material, as it's much older. I want to hopefuly get some more information for him. Thanks in advance for your help.

Matt

Looks definitely vintage, and very nice. Could be a farm team. Here is a pic of a cubs A team in 1948 with similar jerseys, which could explain different tagging - But not a true Cubs jersey. In addition to the tagging being incorrect, the patch does not match a true Cubs patch. There is a subtle difference. I am not sure how to add a second pic to this post so I'll add a pic of the patch in another post.

Here is a true Cubs 1948 patch. Subtle difference with the patch on your jersey - notice how the blue in the patch outlines the letter S differently. The letter C is also a different thickness. The jerseys in that Des Moines pic also appear to have a patch that is true.

None of this is probably helping you , but just pointing out some differences to consider. Good Luck. Still a beauty jersey.

thanks

Hey Joe, thanks. I didn't realize the difference in the Cubs patch. Good work. I'll pass along this information to the owner. I've seen nice, true Cubs jersey's from this time period sell for $2k+ for bench warmers, and much more depending on player. Any idea on value for a complete uniform like this, being from some sort of minor league or club team? Thanks, again.............Matt

I wonder if the McGregor Goldsmith tag is the company the original jersey was sent to for repairs before it went to a minor league club from he parent team.

MacGregor Goldsmith

Goldsmith, then later MacGregor-Goldsmith had a long history of supplying uniforms to minor league ball clubs as well as Negro League teams. I don't think this is a case of a uniform being sent back, but rather a manufacturers labeling from the point of origin.
