Thanks Josh. I don't disagree. There are only 2 know in the world (Jeff has the other). The rare early postcards use actual photos of Cobb, which is pretty cool. I can't think of any standard Cobb cards that use actual photos until maybe 1916 or so.

Jeff, I am with you on the D304. I love that card, and don't see it cartoonish in the way I see the E102.

Jeff, after seeing your beautiful Brunners Cobb, I think I now understand the reason for my earlier comments: I don't have one.

John, thanks :) As for cartoonish Cobbs, this one though hits the mark:

Ok, this thread does it. One of my quests at the National will be to find a nice Ty card. Great cards shown, guys.

I think there are only two known of this beauty. Using the actual photos for early turn of the Century cards are great eye candy.

Yup. Only one graded and your raw beauty that we know of.

Great stuff, Jeff.

My god Jeff. Spectacular. That letter was written before the death of his father too. Amazing stuff.

I can't help myself, but I wish I had the willpower to stay away from threads like this for the very reason you mention, Leon.
With no Cobb's, Ruth's or Gehrig's in my collection, and being in awe of the cards I see in these threads makes me want to do the same thing!

benchod 07-18-2017 10:17 AM

Pretty good stuff Jeff P ;)
You really need to add the big head Cobb to your collection. though

I will first of all start by saying that I didn't know about this thread until this morning. Back a few weeks ago, I stumbled across the 1984 audio book biography of Ty Cobb by Charles Alexander. I thought it was interesting and it reaffirmed the idea that Cobb was a great ball player, but a terrible person for the most part.

After listening to that audio book, I started looking up Cobb videos on YouTube. I stumbled across Charles Leehrsen and discovered his book A Terrible Beauty. I ordered the audio book and just finished it last night.

A terrible beauty needs to be read (or listened to) by every baseball fan. It is a fantastic book. It really saddens me that Cobb is falsely made out to be such a monster. I'm glad Leehrsen set the record straight. This book has made me a Cobb fan. I don't have any of his cards, but I am wanting one really bad.

I don't find it a particularly attractive card, a bit cartoonish like a w strip card. Is it the rarity, condition, set etc.? The price it fetches at auction is astonishing.

I love the D304. Was the first PreWar card I ever bought, simply because I found the image so appealing. To each his own. For example, on the whole I don't care for black-and-white postcards/oversized cards, yet I can still see why others do.

Jeff, recent prices indicate that they are definitely starting to.

His view of not liking them? Prices are crazy!

Thought you were referring to Matty's open-mindedness to pcs as opposed to others on the board. But now I get what you mean. And yes, prices are bonkers.
