November Pickups

With a big smile I welcome November and thank my hobby friends. Thank you Mr. Bland! Paul - It all worked out, much appreciated buddy. Nothing like adding two 19th century beauties to replace a couple modern cards:

Pete - What exactly is that?

Its an 1888 N43 Allen & Ginter. The player poses are the same as in the N29 set, with the obvious addition of a larger, more ornate background.

x2drich2000 11-01-2014 09:21 AM

Very happy to find my first Cobb in the mailbox this morning, and since it should be the same pose as the Nadja, I can live with this being a fill in at least until I can confirm that the Nadja actually exists.

Very cool. I have that N29.

Wow, great T5's! Was that your Cobb Leon or another?

That is the only other one I could find a record of selling (and probably not where Pete (hi Pete) got it) so no, not mine. And the one I have is an SGC20.....

T5s

I picked these up from a friend who won them in a Heritage auction about a year ago. Leon's(hi Leon) Cobb is a beauty and the only other one known I'm aware of. Same for Wagner, as there's only one other Wagner batting that I've seen (ungraded) and it's in poor condition.

Got these two cards in the mail today. I hate getting doubles, but these are two different variations, so I said ahh what the heck.

BINed this one off of eBay.

Liked the colors on the front and the stamp on the back.

What's up with the ginormous SGC holder for your Felix Mendelssohn Hooper??

autograf 11-02-2014 06:54 AM

I sold a Cobb T5 to a mostly-lurker on the board circa 2002 or so. It is not the one pictured here nor is it Leon's, so there's gotta be three. Pretty sure he still has it. Condition might be described as about VG and slightly worse than the pictured one. Regular mount......

That is quite a bit bigger than my Mendelsohn SGC holders. Hope it keeps the card in place better.

My guess is because it was onsite grading at a show, and they didn't have all of their holder sizes onsite. Had I sent the card into SGC for grading, I would've gotten the regular size holder. Being at the show, maybe they didn't have every size available?

I'm not positive if that's the reason, but I didn't ask, and the card seemed stable in its holder, so I'm OK with it...

I won these in eBay auctions tonight - look forward to getting them. These are the first graded examples I will have. Does SGC or PSA grade these? Not thinking of crossing them, just wondering how the gaskets and cases match up with each other.

Coincidentally, I picked up an apparent D381 at the Shriner show and wondered if it's a good idea to slab those, whatever the grade.

The one I came by is trimmed more than usual, with DAN MURPHY CATCHER PHIL AL taped on its own tab to the bottom:

I assume grading companies will reject the card if I leave that tab taped on, so would submitting it mean removing (carefully) all possible tape and residue? Anything else to keep in mind when doing so?

You really should call whichever grading company you want to use and ask them. My guess would be they would not slab the card with the extra paper at bottom. Without it they would probably give an AUT but ya' never know. These are on paper thin stock so protecting them in a slab isn't a bad idea.

Pete, I love that Pinkerton Ty Cobb. God, that's a beautiful picture of him.

Mike, the M101-2 supplements are incredible. Not only do I give you kudos for picking up some really gorgeous examples, I also have to thank you, as I didn't know Merkle was included in the set. That will be one of the first ones I look for in the spring. I now have a safe deposit box big enough to hold those.

Very nice, everybody! Great start to the month.

Mike,

I hate you (just kidding). I have been looking forever for that card. One of my all-time favorites, and the card that really made me love the T210 set (how could you not love a set that puts a little boy on his own card?). Congrat's on a great pick-up. So jealous right now.

Happy to snag this on LOTG over the weekend. Was checking my computer occasionally during extended bidding, at the ready to up my bid, but the need to do so never came.

Now have 8 Duffy backs, which is my most extensive run, however do not have any realistic goal to completely finish the run.

Mike, nice m101-2s. As far as I am aware, only Beckett has holders large enough for these.

Here's a D381 found at the Shriner's Auditorium show in Wilmington, MA on Saturday. This one's trimmed even further than usual, beyond the redemption tab, so it appears a previous owner added their own hand-written version to make up for it.

It's unusual to see a player sign across his face like that.

Sometimes it's the only place the player feels he can sign to have the signature show up. The facsimile autograph is also an obvious distraction for the signor. (Leach is no longer mine.)

Awesome get!! Congrats! Suspect that didn't last too long as a BIN. I know I didn't see it until the eBay/sale link popped up here a few days ago.
