1888 Joseph Hall Cabinet and Possibly Related Real Photo Postcard
I bought this Joseph Hall Cabinet and the accompanying Real Photo Postcard from an estate auction in Rochester, New York. The seller was an elderly woman, and the person referenced on the real photo postcard is supposedly her grandfather, and was supposedly a baseball player. I'm not sure whether he is also supposed to be on the Joseph Hall Cabinet, but I was assuming so.
I posted the postcard on a car website asking about the model, and someone identified it as a Buick Express Truck, either a 1915 C-4 or a 1916 D-4. This would put it at least 27 years after the Joseph Hall. I can't really tell how old the person looks in the picture, but it's reasonable that they could be in their 50s. This is the photo used for the 1888 Sporting Times New York Giants Cigar Card: https://www.robertedwardauctions.com...ts-cigar-card/ Based on the cigar card, the missing names are: 1. Titcomb 2. Keefe 3. Whitney 4. Slattery 5. Ward Ward's face has been somewhat obscured by scribbling, possibly by a kid, indicating that Ward was the family member and is the one pictured on the Real Photo Post Card? Obviously a reach, but just a thought. I tried to do a handwriting comparison between known signatures and the writing on the back, but no luck either. So any thoughts on who the mystery man might be? Thanks for looking! handwriting example
unlikely that it's ward: take a look at how he writes an "f" in the letter (scroll to sixth picture) shown in this link: https://www.psacard.com/autographfac...john-ward/462/
not even close unfortunately, but i suppose his handwriting of an "f" could have changed markedly over time. |
***The seller was an elderly woman, and the person referenced on the real photo postcard is supposedly her grandfather, and was supposedly a baseball player.****
---If possible you might try to contact the lady for her grandfathers name-- |
Yeah, I've tried going through the Auctioneer but she moved away and he doesn't have any way of contacting her.
|
You're probably right, although there is a big difference between the "f" in the first PSA example, and the ones in the last example.

No further thoughts from anyone?

Here is a cut from a different Jos Hall photo that was enlarged a bit more. I am leaning to it not looking like him but maybe someone with better identification skills will know more.

It's an odd thing for a famous person to write on the back of a postcard. I might write it on the back of a group picture that I was in, but Jeff Bagwell would write something like "Here I am with the gang."

Does not look like Ward to me

For those who expressed interest, this Joseph Hall cabinet is up for sale in the current REA auction that ends Sunday:

I don't know if anybody mentioned it, but the writing on the back of the postcard is modern ballpoint pen. I doubt the writing is more than 20 years old.
