Thought i'd throw this on here. I've been considering which set i like best so far(out of the sets i do have), and thought it would be interesting to see what yall liked as well. I reallly like the 1960 Topps set. Its a pretty small one with only 132 cards and no action shots.. and only one series. The pictures/photo's is what stands out to me...lots of close ups..and the Johnny Unitas looking like he's wondering if he locked his keys in his car or something... and as far as I know the first time the Cowboys were added.
I'm sure most/all have seen it but thought i'd add a few photos

The first football set that I ever collected was 1977, I like that one the best with the Largent RC and Walter's second-year card.

jcromp78 03-01-2015 04:31 AM

I would say my favorite sets in no particular order:

51 Bowman (love the design and colors in this set)

55 All American (smaller set, very beautiful classic design with some great legends of the early football days.)

69 Topps (I love the different backgrounds colors an appealing set)

K-Nole 03-01-2015 07:56 AM

My favorite right now is 1978, because that as the set that I very first started collecting.

That 1960 is the next set me and Zack will start, after the 1970 Topps Baseball we are currently doing.

I cant wait.

I will go with the 1969 set as my favorite. The bright colors in the background just make it very appealing.
My favorite set to date to put together is the 1972 set. The hunt for those high numbers was a blast. It was like an addiction to search for them everywhere I traveled. I think I got a little depressed when I finished the set, it was like now what am I going to do.

Econteachert205 03-02-2015 08:19 AM

I like the 69, 77 and 86 sets

sockwell123 03-02-2015 06:20 PM

69 has a few votes so to speak.. i've only got about 3 pages worth so I don't have enough yet for comparison there. They are pretty darn colorful for sure. I thought about my first year/set '86. It has a fair number of good rookies in it, and Super Bowl 20.

pariah1107 03-02-2015 07:37 PM

Though sometimes frustrating to collect, my favorite of them all has to be the 1962 set. Great profile and action pics of players, but damn those black borders glaring faults.

Tim Fritz 03-03-2015 06:02 AM

I'll second the 1962 set. That one is my favorite.

The next for me is the 1972 set. I like the high number all pro cards and the in action cards.

CowboysGuide 03-03-2015 06:59 AM

For the 60's I'll go with the 1961 Fleer set. I really like the 1972 Topps set for the 70's.

Frank seeing those never gets old and if I had that set it would be my favorite too.

Footballdude 03-03-2015 10:54 PM

My favorite is the 63 Topps set. The colored borders, SP's, and PS (purple sky) variations, make it a challenge. It's also the year I was born, so there's that. But I am also particularly fond of the Bowman issues 1950-55. Great color.

sockwell123 03-04-2015 12:29 AM

I tried to look at your 1963 variations but the link sent me to a godaddy site of some sort

Footballdude 03-04-2015 09:07 AM

thanks for the heads up on that. I changed web hosts a short time ago and forgot to the update the link here. It should be good now. Although I see that card no's 1-59 are the only ones that seem to be active. I guess I know what I'm gong to be doing this morning! UGH!

Although the 1977 Topps is the first set I collected from wax packs, I've liked the 1975 set better, as I got several packs of that back in grade school and traded with other kids in the school yard (those were the days!). Also would have to give a huge nod to 1952 Bowman, for the college artwork and logos on several of the cards (including the old SWC schools) and the 1984 USFL set; I still miss the USFL.

jefferyepayne 03-04-2015 06:19 PM

Nice sets so far but don't know how you guys can pick a favorite set ... I like'em all!

If insert sets count, here's my favorite:

sockwell123 03-07-2015 07:11 PM

Can't argue with that. I like all the ones I have, and want all that I don't have..tho that may not be in the cards for me(pun?)
I haven't looked much past '57 but those Bowman's do look nice.
I'd have to say I do favor vintage over modern as I assume most folks do.

sockwell123 03-07-2015 07:12 PM

Are those the 1970 inserts?

nearmint 03-08-2015 06:23 AM

Yes, 1970 Topps Super Glossies. They were inserts in 2nd series packs.

skelly 03-16-2015 06:56 PM

I would have to say the 59 bazooka set is by far my favorite. As far as mainstream issues, I've always thought the 53 Bowman set was under the radar, but perhaps the toughest of the "mainstream" topps / bowman sets. I think that a high grade 69 set looks really nice with the black backs and the colorful fronts in they're in good condition. Always also likes the 77 set for some reason.

sockwell123 03-16-2015 11:23 PM

Didn't even know about the bazooka set till jtschantz showed one in the favorite card thread.

The '59 Bazooka set rocks! Some really, really tough SPs in the set as well. Also an error card (Conerly) that was corrected so there are two versions of his card.

Hands down favorite set for me is the '52 Bowman Large. After Topps came out w/ those BIG 1952 baseball cards, imagine my surprise when in the Fall of '52 Bowman followed suit & issued their FB cards in the same large format!

I never stopped buying packs until I had put that set together! Little did we know back then that the result was so many short-cut cards because Bowman was squeezing them onto the same size sheets as their previous small issues!

I finally had SGC grade all 144 of my original cards back in the middle of 2000's and of course many were 50's & 60's only because of being close cut! My Halas is an example of a NRMT card penalized for the cut!

Here are a few of them:

Damn Fred did you ever touch those cards after pulling them out of the packs? Those are pretty nice looking. I agree I love the 52's but the centering will drive you crazy if you are a freak about it.

jthorst75 03-28-2015 07:55 PM

As of now, I am stuck on the 1950 Bowman's. It's tough to pick a favorite. I think the 1951 and 1952's are next on my list.

I can't pick a favorite either but this would definitely be one of them!

I only collected football in 69 70and 71, so naturally my favorite would have to fall into those years. I have to go with 71 with a nod to the 69 super glossies and the game card inserts from l believe 71.

sockwell123 03-30-2015 06:24 PM

The 70 set was my 2nd set to ever put together... still working on the 69 and 71 among others.

Thanks for sharing your AA's(sweet Baugh autograph!) and Bowmans... I'll have to enjoy yours as i may never get to own any... at least any time soon

I looked up some of those '59 Bazooka cards as well and they are pricey(for me).
