E107, the true Monster

I was going through some (very) old threads regarding the E107 set, and read that several people have come somewhat close to completing it. I was just curious if anyone knows where those partial sets are at today or if the owners sold them off? I feel like even with a lifetime of collecting with unlimited money it would still be tough to truly complete this set. I'd probably try to collect as many examples as I could someday

Now for the fun part of this thread- everyone show your E107s! I know there are members out there, like myself, that never get tired of seeing them

e107collector 05-01-2017 10:54 AM

Chris Sullivan came the closest. Legendary sold off his collection over a 2 year period a few years ago.

He had 147 cards in the collection, this includes Type 2 and a few team variations.

What a great collection it was.

The set has been completed by one collector. A second collector is finished or is one team variation short.

Bought this card back in the late 70's for $25.00. At the time I thought I was paying to much but even then you didn't see them much ! I'm not able to buy expensive cards but feel very lucky to have this one in my collection.

Jay may have more current data than I but I believe that the largest set is still missing one team variation, and second needs at least a few of the team variations. Chris Sullivan actually had the third largest group ever assembled(at the time of the sale it was 2nd) but has since been surpassed.

Since "The Monster" is already taken, maybe the E107 "set" could be called "The Beast"? ;)

philliesphan 05-01-2017 02:07 PM

Is the E107 Doyle, Philadelphia Nat'l variation unique? Is it represented in the (complete) set?

It's the one card that I've looked for from the set that I've never been able to even see a scan of. I only have looked for the Phillies from the set - but that has been elusive from a spectacularly rare run...

oldjudge 05-01-2017 03:19 PM

Then what is the Old Judge set--The Dream?

vintagerookies51 05-01-2017 04:02 PM

I actually like the name "the Beast" for this set. As far as the Doyle Philadelphia, I remember reading that in an auction long ago of 147 e107 cards that card was one of the only ones missing. So not sure if you'll ever find one of those. It is cataloged as a known team variation though.

Here are the only two I own... hope to add more

This one will be on its way to me shortly, can't wait to get it.

Always been fascinated by the e-107 set.

There was a matthewson that showed up in one of the auctions and I seem to recall a Wagner last spring maybe?

Awesome stuff

Shown multiple times, but this Williams is my one and only and it cries out for a little attention.

I've always liked this set and have a poster assembled by a board member proudly hung in my sports room. I do not own any today since my budget is allocated other places, but will add a few examples as the years progress.

Bryan, that's a great looking card for the grade - congrats! I'm happy with my one type card because (1) it is a Senators player, and (2) it has the printed back.

e107s are my second favorite card and have owned 20 or so through the years with some HOFers and OPs in there. I am a completionist at heart and never really had an end goal with the set and sold all mine off a couple months ago.

Josh - Yes, Wagner sold in REA last Spring for just south of $60k IIRC.

Here ya go, thanks.

Are there any sets that are tougher to put together than E107, N172 and N167?

Steve

judsonhamlin 05-05-2017 04:20 PM

E107 has some of the best 'street clothes' portraits in any set ever, and has some of the only cards of players like Kitteridge, LaChance and Mertes but the Poole card may be one of the worst looking cards of all time. He looks like the starting pitcher for the Lollipop Guild.

Steve - there's likely a (large) number of sets that may be just as tough. For example, I don't think an E104-III set exists, but I think there is still a lack of clarity on the full checklist of that one.

A run of Zeenuts is an impossibility as well.

N167 has been completed, even if some of the cards are likely unique.

E107 is completed (per this thread), and I don't think a full N172 is documented - but that beast is outside of my expertise.

E107 is not completed per this thread. Has anyone every completed the N370 Lone Jack set, E254, E270 or the Just So set? There are plenty more probably not completed....

Leon-

I've always trusted the word of oldjudge:

[B]The set has been completed by one collector. A second collector is finished or is one team variation short. [/U]

(3rd post on this thread)

oldjudge 05-07-2017 05:38 PM

Sets that have never been finished:

1. Old Judge-If you define finished as including all team variations, to be consistent with E107s.
2. Gypsy Queens
3. Kalamazoo Bats-One collector is two short which is an amazing accomplishment,
4. Four Base Hits
5. Just So
6. Whitehead and Hoag Pins
7. G&Bs
8. Yum Yums
9. Tomlinsons
10. SF Hess major league set
11. SF Hess California League photographic set

I may have missed some. The point is, with the exceptions of N162s, Mayos, Allen and Ginters, and SF Hess Creoles, most 19th century sets are impossible or virtually impossible to complete. N167s were completed by Jim, and Lone Jacks may or may not have been completed once.

sgbernard 05-08-2017 07:45 PM

Not to hijack the thread, as E107s are one of my favorite sets, but has anyone ever completed the T209-II set (including Reeves, Sherrill, and Steinbach)? It's not just the 19th c sets that are tough! (Although some are really, really tough!)

rainier2004 05-08-2017 07:47 PM

T200 Premiums have been completed.

As with the E107s, there are lots of sets that have never been completed. Many of them do not have concrete set checklists as new subjects are still being found to this day: N172 Old Judge, N173 Old Judge Cabinets, N175 Gypsy Queen, E223 G&B, N403 Yum Yum, W600 Sporting Life Cabinets, etc.

AFAIK, the 1908 Rose Co. postcard set of 192 (12 players for each of the 16 teams) has never been put together. In fact, images are not even known of all of the issued players.

Bicem 05-08-2017 08:42 PM

To the best of my knowledge these postcard sets have never been completed... Hubel, Underwood & Underwood, National Photo Company, Van Oeyen postcards, ALPC

ValKehl 05-08-2017 10:14 PM

Have any of the following sets ever been completed: T210, T213-1, T213-3, T214, T215-1, T215-2, T216 Mino, and T216 Virginia Extra?

oldjudge 05-09-2017 12:38 AM

T210 has been completed several times. In fact, about 20 years ago a full set was auctioned off as one lot.

Bryan,

Give me a call if you ever decide to sell that one.

Jobu 05-09-2017 09:25 AM

For the life of me I cannot find it (perhaps it was sold through Legendary),
but I am pretty sure that a complete set of T213-1 was auctioned off 10-15 years ago. There is a board member who is currently 1 card away from completing it.

T213-1 and T213-3 have both been completed.
