The Leon Luckey Type Card Collection – Bidding Ends on Thursday - August 13, 2015
Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder that bidding for the Leon Luckey Type Card Collection ends in just two days! Open bidding closes at 10:00 pm central time on Thursday - August 13, 2015. There is an incredible selection of items you may not see again for a long time. There are so many unique pieces with something for everyone. The 620 lot auction offers cards, postcards, packaging, wrappers, signs, company correspondence, proofs, premiums, photos and more. Hopefully there is something for everyone! We had a record number of catalog requests. When the dust settled as they say, Heritage received over 100 email requests for catalogs which included almost a dozen new bidders to our auctions. Plus we handed I don’t even know how many more catalogs at the National Convention in Chicago. As I mentioned, open bidding ends at 10:00 pm central time on Thursday - August 13, 2015. You do have to have placed a bid on a lot before this time in order to bid in the extended session. Each lot ends on our 30-minute clock rule which means starting at 10:00 pm if a lot goes for 30 minutes without a bid that lot will close. You can view the lots here: http://sports.ha.com/c/search-result...=SortBy-071515 If you have any questions please ask now. The night of the auction gets busy and with the East Coast National going on we might be a little short staffed. Thank you to everyone who asked for a catalog and good luck to all! Peter Calderon |
i'm
dying to see what the matty proof and the multi strike scrap go for!
wish I could afford either! a design change proof has not been offered !!! and matty to boot:eek: the multi strike is just ridiculous.....I remember bidding on that on ebay years ago and not even coming close ........... wow..... good luck with the rest of the lots, but you know i'll be eating popcorn watching these 2 particular dream cards get auctioned off before my very eyes:o |
I will make my futile attempt to win some lots!

It will be hard to partner with anyone for this upcoming auction. |
Just went back through the auction and saw a lot of what I initially wanted is already over my budget. There are still a few items I'm planning to take a stab at, but I'm not expecting good outcomes.
|
It looks like I will have to be satisfied with the fact that I WAS the High Bidder on a few items for a few days....

Johnny- Matty proof and Mullaney seem to be doing fine. |

My bids are in and they are safe FOR NOW...
will be a late night for sure, unless I just bid it up and let it ride... The suspense is killing me!:D |
Suspense? Nah, just going "all in" with no reserve on a ton of things with no price history. No big deal...

I suppose it is improper Leon for you to offer tips on a few things that seem to be "bargains" right now? I know it might seem to some that you are trying to bid them up but since I am the one asking surely you could not be accused of doing that...As you say it is hard to judge with little or no value trail on so many of them........
|
I have said this to many friends, I will tell anyone and everyone anything they want to know pertaining to my collection. I want them to bid with the most information they can have.
Obviously I have a very vested interest but I also know more about these particular cards than most do. I have already answered plenty of questions privately. Some things I paid a ton for will go for very little and things I have virtually nothing into will go for a lot. Some things are already way higher than I expected, others not so much. And there are a ton of things that are too rare for their own good. The market dictates the pricing. But otherwise, I am skipping my 2 softball games tonight (which are very important to me) to be around to watch *(and answer any questions I can).... And lastly, as I told another friend and board member today, don't forget about Heritage's extended payment options. That seemed to help his dilemma of getting shut out and not being able to circle back, with the single lot by lot closing style. Anyone can PM, email or call me if they have special circumstances too. Heritage has given me a bit of leeway on a case by case basis, in length of payment terms for my collection, to help collectors be able to bid more. :) But if no arrangements are made otherwise, of course their regular rules apply. See their website for details. Quote:

Leon....
Good Luck tonight!:)

Leon -- Wishing the auction of your collection the very best of success and fulfillment. I'm sure you put a great deal of time, effort, and enjoyment into building your array of Type cards. For so many of them, it may be said, "you don't come across this one very often." ---Brian Powell
|
about 3 weeks ago I made note of 24 lots I thought I might have a snowball's chance on....... I just reviewed all of them and placed a bid on the only one of them my budget can still justify. In the lead for now!
Good Luck Leon, I can't imagine the emotional roller coaster you must be on! Tony |
Good luck to Leon and to everyone else*
* Note: these well wishes do not apply to the item that I want most :D |
It's just so easy to click & bid on the lots. And if you're worrying about paying for the lot and/or lots, just say to yourself, "Sometimes you gotta say, WTF"

Does Heritage accept Paypal or only personal checks?

Payment Options
Hi Zach,
Yes, Heritage does accept Paypal. We accept credit cards on invoices up to $2,500.00. Good Luck. Peter |

Have my bid in and am leading for now also! Good luck, Leon!
Larry |
Good luck Leon.
Peter know you haven't had a lot of time to correct since it was brought to your companies attention back in May. But as pointed out by myself and the owner of the other example. This isn't the only recorded or known example of this card as your description states. Once again FYI...... http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...ge/image_7.jpg http://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/ex...umbnail-071515 |
I pointed something out to Heritage in this auction as well and they had me send scans but never corrected the description or reached out to me again. Money trumps all.
|
What was it Jason?
I thank John for that info above too. Quote:
|
Just got a bunch of e-mails. Thought I was popular for a second. I was greeted by some outbid notices.
|
The "unique" back of lot 79402. I have one just like it.
http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0uroqiwx.png On July 16 - they responded but nothing was done to change the description and no further correspondence. "Dear Mr. Miller, Thank you for the image. I have provided this information to our consignment director as well as our cataloger of this item. Kind regards, Maribel Zapien | Client/Bidder Services HERITAGE AUCTIONS 877-HERITAGE (437-4824) | Fax: 214-409-1425 3500 Maple Avenue 17th Floor Dallas, TX 75219 www.HA.com Dallas | New York | Beverly Hills | San Francisco | Houston | Paris | Geneva" |
Thanks Jason. I personally didn't keep up with each of the 3-4 different backs of those particular cards. Mike P. is the one I go to for those questions. I appreciate the good scan too. If someone wins this, and based their decision on that info and now doesn't want it, I won't force the sale. It's that easy. thanks again....
ps...I should add, I have to run everything by Heritage but we have always seen eye to eye in these areas. Quote:
|
Yeah, my point is that Heritage had the opportunity back when this card was $1000 cheaper to correct the description and they didn't. The idea that you will negate the sale after the fact, whatever. I go out of my way to send the scans and am communicated with that they are forwarding to the catalogue and director of the auction and nothing is done.
So, I guess I just sell my "unique" back in a couple of years with a similar description. If I do it with Heritage they won't ask any questions and will ignore the person who ends up buying your card. Time is a flat circle. |
Leon, you're welcome.
As an FYI I notified Derek on May 14th. McKee also told Peter and the team quite sometime ago. Their response to him was along the lines of because his wasn't graded they couldn't count his card. Even more odd this card along with Dan's near set and can be seen in an article written by Dan that was featured in an issue of Old Cardboard. Dan since then had the card graded....seems that still wasn't enough. Great card either way. Just hate to see somebody buy what they think is the only one when there is clearly another well known example. Cheers, John |
Man, that T213-3 Red Cobb is going like gangbusters!
http://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-ca...links-12202013 |
Yes indeed as a few more Cobbs will be seeing some action later! So, much for the type 3 Red Cobb staying down. Bids placed and coffee is brewing for tonight!

Neither am I, though I have some other cards that are just about out of range for me. |
Leon,
Best of luck with the sale of your collection!! Out of curiosity, did it feel strange when you had to let all of your cards go?? I know you had some of them quite a long time. I'm sure one day I'll be selling mine. Tony |
I have been in a daze for a month...ask me in another month. :) Actually, since I am still avidly collecting it hasn't been bad. I will never assemble this one again but there will be another, God willing.

Well, I won 2 small lots - not the 2 that I was hoping to win but I am very happy! One more that I am watching - not sure if I will pull the trigger on another bid or 2. Maybe I need another glass of wine!
|
I only won one lot (finished the E98 master set with the orange Walsh) but I was bidding on many, so Leon I at least helped your daughter's fund a little 😊
Congratulations on what appears to be a very successful auction and congrats also to Pete C. who did yeoman's work. |
I was happy to win the lot I did! Only needed one card from the lot but pleased with the outcome. Was outbid on the only only two lots I had bid on (well one is still going)
|
I only won one lot also. I have been trying to get it out of his hands for several years and now I have. Good luck to your daughter in her future.
|
Well, I was the underbidder on a couple of lots, so I got to push some money in Leon's direction, but I'm out.

That was a short, but bloody, skirmish. I came away with the D381 Ferguson Burns and the 2 T217's. They were 'bargains', sorta. Glad to have them, in any case. Got pummeled on 25 other lots.
Let's do it again, Leon. |
Congrats on the Ferguson Burns Bill. Glad you snagged one! Unfortunately my $750 bid for the Wagner D381 didn't hold up:( .... I was prepared to go significantly more than that but it escalated pretty quickly and I stayed on the sidelines.
|
Picked up the Mino/Kotton and the Contentnea packs. I gave the GQ a ride until the bitter end, but ended up bailing out at $3750 (without the juice).

Tracked about 10 lots, but I was only able to add two cards from Leon's type set to my White Sox type set: the W600 Callahan and the Home Run Candy Appling. :)
Really wanted the M101-6 Schalk, but I couldn't pull the trigger on placing another bid... :( |
Price on T209 Thompson
I had a bid on that T209 Thompson when it was still just into four figures, and was obviously blown out of the water--wow.
To be fair, the listing says that the back is "unique to this card alone" which could be interpreted to mean that the back is only found on (all) T209 Thompsons, something which is true. While that is an ambiguous way of putting it, it's not strictly speaking a false advertisement. I do agree, though, the title made it misleadingly seem like this was a variant T209 Thompson back, something that does exist (as Mike Peich can attest). I wonder if the winner had thought that, or whether he just really, really needed that card for his T209 set. |
Won these beauties..!

I don't smoke nor do I condone smoking but might start if I could smoke Pirate cigarettes!
|
Really Bummed! I know I should have read the rules but WHY WAS THIS THE ONLY AUCTION IN RECENT MEMORY THAT ENDED BEFORE 5 am Eastern Time? (Actually just got back later than expected from out of town). Anyway, if whoever won the Leach E125 or several of the Wagner items needs any T206 or possibly other trade items, please message me. Missed out on some things that were bargains. Great auction.
|
Just woke up to check my bids and I didn't win anything. Wasn't expecting it to be over so soon. Figured 2:30 would be a good time to check in.
Was hoping to bring home the Obak slogans set, the E100 Tennant lot, and the Orbit Foxx card. My bids were within $20 of the final on all lots. I think being so close is the worst part. It's going to be a very sad Friday. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I came away with 3 lots...the E92/101 Young with E78 back, the small group of E cards including an e92 Nadja Oakes, and the E92 Crofts Candy (red) Bemis. If the winner of lot 79197 (group of 20 E cards) is a board member, I would be interested in 1, maybe 2 cards from the group.

I didn't end up winning any of the 3 lots I bid on.
If someone here won the W517 lot and is breaking it up, I am interested in one of the 3-card strips. |

Nice pickups, DJ! I was the underbidder on the E105 Lajoie. |
Bid On MANY .... only won 2
2 Attachment(s)
Wow .... some CRAZY bidding on most of these lots! I was shocked by how high the T209 blue plates went for. I did pick up a couple of consolation prizes!
|
DJ, nice pickup on the Prizefighter, that's a great card! It was good to hang out with you + others in chat last night.
Jon, congrats on the Contentnea pack, I was an early bidder on that but couldn't come close. |
Didn't even notice it until a few hours before the auction ended, but I was lucky enough to win the 1949 Schumacher Service Station Vernon Stephens.
|
Picked up the Henry Johnson Confectionery pair and the pair of W514 types. Missed out on a few things I really wanted because of the lot-by-lot ending, but realistically I probably shouldn't have spent any more than I did anyway.
|
I was very interested in the T207 Red Cross Weaver card, but due to a couple of other larger purchases in the past few weeks, I had to watch from the sidelines on that one. Too bad - I thought the price was very fair on that tough card.
|
Is it just my imagination or did the Matty T206 proof go down in price? Was a bid retracted?
|
I won the Willilam Paterson Miller Huggins card for a very good price IMO.
Frustrating thing - I went to check out and saw shipping is $19.30 for one standard-sized card. That thing better be in my lap tomorrow... |
Any idea what all of this sold for?
That was a pretty amazing collection with some strong prices realized.
I did a cursory calculation from the Heritage site and stopped at half a million dollars, does anyone know what the final tally was for Leon's collection? |

Same for me .... ouch!!

$23.45 for one graded card...
just another 6% to my winning bid |
Quote:
My total for 9 card (3 lots) was $46.90. DJ |
From the invoice:
"Please allow 7-14 days for shipping." I guess absurd shipping fees do not equate to rapid service. |
Quote:
By the way, DJ mentioned LOTG as if their shipping is reasonable. I won 4 raw cards in their last auction and shipping was $8.40..... I thought that was too high, plus they sent the notice that shipping will be delayed since they are at White Plains trying to get more consignments. I do agree Sterling has been reasonable. |
I am not aware of any bids being retracted in the auction except one insignificant mistake weeks ago when a person hit the wrong key (on a few hundred dollar item).
Quote:
|
$8 shipping for properly packed cards in a box seems more than fine be me, especially if the cards are insured by LOTG's carrier.
|
Any feedback/thoughts on how the sale went Leon?
|
Is there a link where I can see what the final prices were on Leo's items?
I hope he cleaned up big time, It is an out of this world collection! |
I was shocked by how high the Sociedade Ruth/Cobb card went even though that's the only known copy that I know of. That was one of the cards I was really going to try to win but it blew past my budget.
On the other hand I thought some Ruth cards went for very reasonable prices where I should have bid more such as the Drake Ruth. However I was going for a lot of other cards in the auction and in extended was the high bidder on a few and was over my budget by a crazy amount so let those cards go. Of course I ended up getting outgunned on most of those cards so I wish I could have looped around and bid on those. Struck out on all of the Heading Home Ruth's and I really wanted to just pick up one more for my collection. Like above some that were cheap going into extended ended up at much higher prices than those that closed early at "high" prices. I wish I could have looped back again. I think the t209 Thompson went fair or even low. I think that is a really cool card whose popularity extends beyond set collectors. I wanted it but was something like the second or third underbidder. Story of my auction but wished I could've placed another bid or two there. I did win some stuff highlighted by the Pathe Freres Ruth which is a strong upgrade to my current one. I thought that went for a very fair price given what the other lots were going for. Very happy with that card. |

Congrats! The question is: Would you rather have that entire collection or a Wagner, a plank and some cash left over? |
