Tracked about 10 lots, but I was only able to add two cards from Leon's type set to my White Sox type set: the W600 Callahan and the Home Run Candy Appling. :)

Really wanted the M101-6 Schalk, but I couldn't pull the trigger on placing another bid... :(

sgbernard 08-14-2015 12:24 AM

Price on T209 Thompson

I had a bid on that T209 Thompson when it was still just into four figures, and was obviously blown out of the water--wow.

To be fair, the listing says that the back is "unique to this card alone" which could be interpreted to mean that the back is only found on (all) T209 Thompsons, something which is true. While that is an ambiguous way of putting it, it's not strictly speaking a false advertisement. I do agree, though, the title made it misleadingly seem like this was a variant T209 Thompson back, something that does exist (as Mike Peich can attest). I wonder if the winner had thought that, or whether he just really, really needed that card for his T209 set.

Really Bummed! I know I should have read the rules but WHY WAS THIS THE ONLY AUCTION IN RECENT MEMORY THAT ENDED BEFORE 5 am Eastern Time? (Actually just got back later than expected from out of town). Anyway, if whoever won the Leach E125 or several of the Wagner items needs any T206 or possibly other trade items, please message me. Missed out on some things that were bargains. Great auction.

shernan30 08-14-2015 12:59 AM

Just woke up to check my bids and I didn't win anything. Wasn't expecting it to be over so soon. Figured 2:30 would be a good time to check in.

Was hoping to bring home the Obak slogans set, the E100 Tennant lot, and the Orbit Foxx card. My bids were within $20 of the final on all lots. I think being so close is the worst part.

It's going to be a very sad Friday.

I came away with 3 lots...the E92/101 Young with E78 back, the small group of E cards including an e92 Nadja Oakes, and the E92 Crofts Candy (red) Bemis. If the winner of lot 79197 (group of 20 E cards) is a board member, I would be interested in 1, maybe 2 cards from the group.

I didn't end up winning any of the 3 lots I bid on.

If someone here won the W517 lot and is breaking it up, I am interested in one of the 3-card strips.

Nice pickups, DJ! I was the underbidder on the E105 Lajoie.

Bid On MANY .... only won 2

Wow .... some CRAZY bidding on most of these lots! I was shocked by how high the T209 blue plates went for. I did pick up a couple of consolation prizes!

Bliggity 08-14-2015 05:57 AM

DJ, nice pickup on the Prizefighter, that's a great card! It was good to hang out with you + others in chat last night.

Jon, congrats on the Contentnea pack, I was an early bidder on that but couldn't come close.

Jason Carota 08-14-2015 06:05 AM

Didn't even notice it until a few hours before the auction ended, but I was lucky enough to win the 1949 Schumacher Service Station Vernon Stephens.

darwinbulldog 08-14-2015 06:50 AM

Picked up the Henry Johnson Confectionery pair and the pair of W514 types. Missed out on a few things I really wanted because of the lot-by-lot ending, but realistically I probably shouldn't have spent any more than I did anyway.

scooter729 08-14-2015 07:23 AM

I was very interested in the T207 Red Cross Weaver card, but due to a couple of other larger purchases in the past few weeks, I had to watch from the sidelines on that one. Too bad - I thought the price was very fair on that tough card.

ccre 08-14-2015 07:27 AM

Is it just my imagination or did the Matty T206 proof go down in price? Was a bid retracted?

the-illini 08-14-2015 07:29 AM

I won the Willilam Paterson Miller Huggins card for a very good price IMO.

Frustrating thing - I went to check out and saw shipping is $19.30 for one standard-sized card. That thing better be in my lap tomorrow...

Qcards 08-14-2015 07:33 AM

Any idea what all of this sold for?

That was a pretty amazing collection with some strong prices realized.
I did a cursory calculation from the Heritage site and stopped at half a million dollars, does anyone know what the final tally was for Leon's collection?

I wouldn't count on it. I won a single graded in their sunday auction almost 2 weeks ago. Received the invoice the next day, Monday (8/3), with no shipping charges added. Paid by paypal that same day. I ended up calling either tuesday or Wednesday to find out when the shipping would be added. Finally ended up getting the shipping charges added on Thursday (8/6) and still have not received any notification that the card has shipped. And $19 to ship a $250 card is outragious. I guess a single graded card really does fall under their "Trading Card Set or Notebook, Large" shipping category. Sorry for the vent, but this is one of the things that just really bugs me about some auction houses and is one of the reasons I prefer to purchase from LOTG, Sterling, etc.

My total for 9 card (3 lots) was $46.90.

DJ

the-illini 08-14-2015 07:47 AM

From the invoice:

"Please allow 7-14 days for shipping."

I guess absurd shipping fees do not equate to rapid service.

Sorta makes me glad I didn't win the one minor lot I bid on after 10:00, my last bid put me over the limit I had set for myself several hours early anyway. Tack another $19 onto that and I really would've busted it.

By the way, DJ mentioned LOTG as if their shipping is reasonable. I won 4 raw cards in their last auction and shipping was $8.40..... I thought that was too high, plus they sent the notice that shipping will be delayed since they are at White Plains trying to get more consignments.

I do agree Sterling has been reasonable.

Leon 08-14-2015 07:56 AM

I am not aware of any bids being retracted in the auction except one insignificant mistake weeks ago when a person hit the wrong key (on a few hundred dollar item).

VintageBall 08-14-2015 08:00 AM

$8 shipping for properly packed cards in a box seems more than fine be me, especially if the cards are insured by LOTG's carrier.

Any feedback/thoughts on how the sale went Leon?

Joshwesley 08-14-2015 08:09 AM

Is there a link where I can see what the final prices were on Leo's items?

I hope he cleaned up big time,
It is an out of this world collection!

glchen 08-14-2015 08:13 AM

I was shocked by how high the Sociedade Ruth/Cobb card went even though that's the only known copy that I know of. That was one of the cards I was really going to try to win but it blew past my budget.

On the other hand I thought some Ruth cards went for very reasonable prices where I should have bid more such as the Drake Ruth. However I was going for a lot of other cards in the auction and in extended was the high bidder on a few and was over my budget by a crazy amount so let those cards go. Of course I ended up getting outgunned on most of those cards so I wish I could have looped around and bid on those.

Struck out on all of the Heading Home Ruth's and I really wanted to just pick up one more for my collection. Like above some that were cheap going into extended ended up at much higher prices than those that closed early at "high" prices. I wish I could have looped back again.

I think the t209 Thompson went fair or even low. I think that is a really cool card whose popularity extends beyond set collectors. I wanted it but was something like the second or third underbidder. Story of my auction but wished I could've placed another bid or two there.

I did win some stuff highlighted by the Pathe Freres Ruth which is a strong upgrade to my current one. I thought that went for a very fair price given what the other lots were going for. Very happy with that card.

950k... Wow.
Congrats!

The question is:

Would you rather have that entire collection or a Wagner, a plank and some cash left over?

I thought it went very well overall. The things I HAD to have for my collection as I needed them to fill a type card hole, didn't generally do well. The things I got because I absolutely loved the way they looked, did extremely well. Note to self, buy things I really like.

Leon's accountant is going to be busy figuring out the capital gains tax on this auction, yikes! 😱

I bid in a lot of Heritage auctions and always figure bid price plus commission fees plus outrageous shipping charges in to my decision on how much to bid. The poster who said outrageous shipping costs do not equate to quick shipping is right on the money.

autograf 08-14-2015 09:03 AM

The 950Kish was with the 19.5% vig added in.............I think. A nice tally. Hopefully the cap gains don't kill you too bad as there are gains on some, losses on others. A sufficient enough amount to ensure your daughter get's through school, has a nice wedding at some point, and spoil a few grandkids down the road.................and some left over for collection #2..........

DeanH3 08-14-2015 09:10 AM

Congrats Leon! Good luck on collection #2.

I wanted that Schapira Bros. Ty Cobb Big Show Candy card, but got crushed!!

Great looking card!!

Happy to win the one card I had my eye on in this auction...

Griffins 08-14-2015 09:22 AM

I won 2 cards. Shipping was billed at $44.85.
Seriously?

Edited to add- received an unsolicited, updated invoice with shipping cut in half. Much more reasonable.

oldjudge 08-14-2015 09:22 AM

Looks like the 950,115 includes the buyer's premium? Having said that, I would think an astute guy like Leon negotiated to receive a cut of the BP.

ZachS 08-14-2015 09:33 AM

Leon, you know I was going after that other Cafe Du Monde but I ended up having to back out. You're welcome for helping drive that one up a bit more. :D

I ended up with the W573 uncut strip. I'm going to make my own holder and slab it "Leon Luckey Collection" (to help drive up the price should I ever sell it).

ullmandds 08-14-2015 09:48 AM

Congrats Leon...that was a fun auction with cooler material all in one place than has been seen in a long time...atleast by me.

I got beaten on the 30 or so things I bid on...none of which I had to have.

I thought prices were quite strong for the most part.

So are we going Ivy league?

Maybe Pete Calderon, who was able to get on the board to advertise the auction in the past couple of days, can log in and explain these shipping fees.

3 cards, $40.65. They also have a great workaround for California law. They are not allowed to charge tax on Shipping charges here so they state it as "service and handling" to avoid the law. Just to squeeze a couple more dollars out. Nice!

timn1 08-14-2015 10:19 AM

Sales tax

Also it looks like Heritage is charging sales tax even for bidders in states where they don't have offices, which is unusual in my experience for an auction house. Maybe an explanation of that would be possible...
