Posted By: Dan Mathewson
...what a hoot. You have your choice: the Matty, whose sides were cut off to stoke someone's fire. Or, the Chance, which was just found in the Alabama tornado aftermath.

Your choice, either one, for twenty times their real value. What a DEAL! Guaranteed, PRO-gradeable. (PRO probably wouldn't even notice the Matty is trimmed...)

Posted By: Ben
That matty was peddled around on ebay several times with no takers. Finally, some idiot used BIN on the card for $50. Check out this guy's feedback...he's the idiot that bought the card for $50 a few weeks ago!

Posted By: runscott
He probably doesn't know that the heavy trim job killed the value and he's looking for a way to make some extra dough. I've done stupider stuff, but if you guys call me an idiot on the board, I just might get my feelings hurt......waahhhh! waahh! waahh! waaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Posted By: Ben
MW,

what makes this guy an idiot is not the fact that he bought the card for $50- its the fact that he is immediately reselling it for double that price with a buy it now of $550!

Posted By: MW
Ben --

It's called eBay. He bought it for one price and is trying to sell it for more. No one is forcing anyone to bid. What's the problem? Who hasn't bought a card on eBay and then sold it for more within a week or two? This happens all the time with art, used automobiles, antiques, real estate, and yes, even baseball cards. Why all the consternation?

Posted By: leon
Might want to check your math.....double 50.. to 550 ? Sounds like fuzzy logic I will agree with MW on this one...$50 dollars for that card is not as bad as my $40 fake D304 Lajoie.....regards all....

Posted By: Ben
MW,

this card has been listed and relisted for months now with no bids. Finally, this guy bites on the card, and what does he do? he immediately relists it at double the price with a BIN of $550 to everybody who passed on it however many times in the first place.

Okay, calling him an idiot may have been a little harsh on my part. But it is obvious that this guy has no idea what he's doing. But you're right- nobody is being forced to bid on the card, and it's unlikely anyone ever will.

Posted By: Ben
leon, he listed the card with a minimum bid of $110 (roughly twice what he bought it for) and a BIN price of $550.

Posted By: Ben
another testament to this guy's idiocy is the fact that he's described the card's condition as VG...

Posted By: MW
Ben --

One evening when I was chatting with someone, I suggested that he purchase a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig that was missing the bottom portion of the card (card was originally listed on eBay). The price was right and when he relisted the card several weeks later, he made a profit. I certainly agree with you that a BIN of $550 is too high, but like runscott wrote, maybe the seller doesn't know any better.

I still remember a show I attended many years ago where the seller of a 1954 Hank Aaron rookie wanted 90% of book for his card:

"What do you mean?" I asked. "The card has one of the corners clipped off!"

"Exactly!" the seller replied. "90% of it is still there."

Posted By: Ben
at the root of all this is an ignorant seller trying to make a fst buck. Can't blame him there.

Posted By: MW
Ben --

We don't know whether he is ignorant or not. I don't think he paid an unreasonable price for the card, and I don't see anything wrong with him listing it for approximately twice what he paid for it. It could be that he IS ignorant of condition, but you are certainly not obligated to exercise the BIN option. Nor is anyone else. I think the basic problem with your original argument is that anyone who attempts to make a profit on eBay could be called an idiot -- especially those individuals who list a BIN price much higher than the starting bid. Think of it like this -- if someone purchased the card for $550, would you still consider the seller to be an idiot?

Posted By: Ben
yes, the seller is free to list the card at whatever price he chooses. His prices reflect a degree of ignorance, or at least highly unrealistic expectations. I guess the real idiot would be the guy who BINs the card at $550...
