Etiquette Question - post-auction (ebay) commentary

A fairly interesting auction concluded earlier today. As much as I wanted to win it - it would have been my first purchase in nearly two years and it was right at the crosshairs of my collecting focus - I was seriously outbid.

I would like to talk about the particulars (and I would be surprised if other members weren't also participating in the auction) but I also, considering the possibility that a Net54er won it, want to give the winner a chance to broach the subject (and possibly receive their winnings and inspect the item first).

What is the etiquette on these things? How long is long enough to wait for the winner to make an appearance?

swarmee 10-29-2016 08:24 PM

Last time this was discussed, 7 days was recommended before outing the auction so that the card(s) could be paid for and mailed/received before "outing." In the past when it was the day after or a couple days after, people were emailing the seller to offer bigger sums of money and the original auction was cancelled.

Yes. Thanks. That is the main worry.

And the plot thickens. The anticipation is killer...

The business day after I get a shipping notice I feel comfortable talking about it. But to each their own and when the item is in hand is as safe as it gets concerning a buyer backing out. There is no formal rule about talking about auctions which are ongoing or have ended.

Now you've done it...

....so now you've got me and seventy-six other members who just won a big item in the last twelve hours sweating it out....thanks loads

..

swarmee 10-30-2016 08:58 AM

Why are you sweating anything out? It sounds like the OP (original poster) wanted to discuss an item of interest, but wanted to make sure it was properly delivered to the buyer first. That is very proper. If doesn't sound at all like he thinks it is fake or altered, based on the way I read the post. Would you rather him ask the question and then have your sale cancelled by the seller?

drcy 10-30-2016 09:20 AM

There is no rule. There isn't even consensus agreement. Though you will find individuals with strong personal opinions, sometimes two or three who share an opinion and think it should be a rule and, after talking amongst themselves, sometimes think it is a rule.

Post for follow-up; please share your thoughts when you get a chance, abothebear.

If you suspected that a board member was possibly buying a counterfeit or altered card, why would there be a waiting period to speak up? Not getting that at all. If you see something, say something. As they say.

abothebear 11-05-2016 12:49 PM

not a bad situation

I will bring it up tomorrow. And I don't wish to bring it to the fore for negative reasons. I think it is cool, but I wanted to give it some time for the buyer to bring it up (if they are even a Net54er).

This isn't that case at all; there are plenty of people who out auctions/BINs that are fraudulent, and those are a boon to this message board.

:)

Not this time.

abothebear 11-05-2016 04:59 PM

I have been doing some more research and discovered something that makes the auction less of a discovery, so I am putting together the summary and will post it soon.

It relates to the R313A set from the 30s. Four rare Cleveland Indians players were offered in an auction that closed a week ago. One of them was not on any of the checklists I have seen (though I discovered today that PSA has 1 listed in their registry, though not on their checklist).

Pete, you've got T206's mixed up with T205's. There are no cataloged
"stray line" T206's but there is a "stray line" T205 that brings a premium. ;)

Mike, I'd love to see more scans if you have others of the scarce group.
