Where / When are the best Pre - War shows

Posted By: Matt E.
Since we are spread out all over the country... Can you tell me what what are the best pre war shows and where. One you should attend at least once. Of course the National would be in there.
I have noticed the Beckett and SCD do not list all the card shows running. Thanks
Posted By: BcD
in my opinion. Scattered fragments of lower grade pre-war are out there but for the most part there is "us",the board members who hoard everything and recyle it among ourselves. Even at shows everyone is looking to buy so they can put the cards on their websites marked up or classify spam on chat boards and then e-bay. Some people bring decent stuff to shows but even the ones who have nice cards to sell or trade don't need a table at a show to do so. They walk around with haliburton breifcases and show their wares to fellow collectors they banter on chat boards for years!
Posted By: warshawlaw
The National is still a great venue for collectors. I find a heck of a lot of stuff I need every time. Ebay too is a great venue. I've added stuff to my collection that I've wanted for years thru ebay.

Posted By: cn
Fort Washington without a doubt. I have been to 4 Nationals and Fort Washington has better pre war material. I hope the new venue keeps the same atmosphere. If you have never gone to this show it is definitely worth the trip. It reminds me of the the shows in the late 70,s and early 80,s. Just remember to pass by Mr. Mint who always has the front table.

Posted By: Russ Bright
I was trying to figure out some way to GET to the national. Being in seattle makes it almost impossible to find any good card shows let alone prewar showa, any west coasters have recommendations? I'm willing to drive a couple hundres miles (oregon and cali would be fine) but I would like a chance to find some great cards and NOT have to put up with people overcharging (99 dollar BIN for very poor common T205) on ebay...

Posted By: Alan
Great topic !!!

There used to be a bunch of shows all over the country that had great vintage material. Big shows, small shows, hotel shows, mall shows, everywhere...

But, ebay plus the 40+ sports auction houses nowadays have really put an end to all but a very few major shows including the National, Ft. Washington, and maybe Sportsfest.

It's still a lot of fun to attend the shows that have survived, but just don't expect to find any vintage material there. Just make the trip more of a social thing - go to meet fellow collectors, dealers, evening entertainment, etc,...
