I always thought this was an iconic Topps Baseball card.
Anytime I would pass a glass case at a Baseball card show, all the way back to when I was a kid, this card always caught my eye.
Don't know why it has taken me 57 years to own one.

Fantastic pickups starting with the FRobby and going back to the HR Derby FRobby (I had to catch up on the past few pages)

chompin to buy something!

Nice Robinson! With that pose and the spring training crowd in the background it almost has an "in action" feel to it.

Very nice pickup.

I was thinking that this picture was taken in Seals Stadium in SF where the Giants played their 1st 2 seasons before moving to Candlestick in 1960. Many of the Giant player's, as well as some other NLers, cards have Seals Stadium in the background on their 59-60 Topps issues.

I know these are not baseball but they are just too cool not to share.:) Got these in a trade from a fellow member. They remind me of drag racing from when I was a little kid.

KCRfan1 12-15-2016 09:06 PM

Ben, I loved those cards as a kid growing up! One of my favorites were " Way Out Wheels " cards as well.

Seeing your racing cards brought back a flood of memories for me! Good times!!!

I almost picked those up myself due to the same thing.

I can't remember with a 100% certainty, but I am pretty sure I owned Drag Racing or NHRA cards at one point when I was pretty young.

Love the old school drag racing. Saw those too, great pick up. Wish I had picked up more of those packs as a kid.

Hey thanks Dale.

Not to diverge from the current thread topic - but the gray backs will be the issue. I have 11 of the key mid-series 60. I've always always wondered why some are so rare if they were printed in near equal numbers.....

Z

Don't know how I missed these?

Good question, ZW? I'd like to know the answer too.

Thank you Dale...

Here is a link to a previous thread discussing the 52 grey backs. While it does not discuss reasons why some GBs appear to be SP, it speculates which cards are SPs:

Upgrading cards I already have is a slippery slope I try to avoid, but the color on this Banks really called my name. Will hope it wasn't just goofy scanner settings. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...876649b8b9.jpg

Thanks, SFMS.

That is some great, although somewhat confusing (for me) information. I always thought cream and gray backs were one of the same, just different names people, over the years used to describe them.

Reading this, and with all the cards I own, I do wish I had a copy or 2 to share/be a part of this unique, hard to obtain subset if you will.

Picked up these educational cards from 1979 to get the Lou Brock card. If you can't read the writing, it profiles Gene Richards, Omar Moreno and Caesar Cedeno as the most likely active players to make a run at the stolen base record. On the back, kids were supposed to test their reading comprehension by answering the quiz questions on the back.

The Warden is a custom card, but I thought it looked good next to the Horton

Warden certainly lucked out with the right team and year for his only season in major league baseball. He didn't appear in the World Series, though, but I imagine he received a ring and a bonus.

I'd never seen the back of a 1958 Series 6 team card before. This is pretty cool how Topps welcomes in Stan the Man!http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a7beb88227.jpg

What's the story behind that? Why wasn't Musial in the 56 and 57 Topps sets?

He was not in the 1951 thru 1957 Topps series .... or the 1950, 1951, 1954-55Bowman issues.

I have heard that there were contract disputes between Topps and Bowman for many players and have also heard that certain players just simply were not available when it was time to sign the contract. I have never seen a Bowman contract, but the Topps contracts are pretty cool companion pieces.

I can only imagine the Bowman issues of Aaron, Musial, Jackie, and soooo many others!

jason.1969 12-19-2016 10:33 AM

And this post seems to corroborate the above while offering added detail on how Topps finally got Stan the Man...

I think I've been busted on my propensity for centering!

The Musial was a Heritage win from their last major auction. It's an upgrade to my PSA 5 that I will put up on the BST soon. The Musial is definitely one of the great postwar cards, to be sure. Thanks for the kind comments!

Love that kind of stuff. And, that is a great selection of players and cards on that grouping. The '76 Brock is one of those cards that represent the set and the era to me.

Baseball cards and Christmas have been a family tradition in my home since my father first put a wax pack box under our tree in 1970. With this 1959 Bob Gibson Rookie my Dad has extended his streak to 46 years. My wife and kids gave me an EBay gift card for Christmas with instructions to use it for baseball cards. The 56 Koufax is courtesy of them. I have wanted both of these cards for a very long time. I remain a child at heart...a very very blessed child:o I hope you and your family had a great Christmas.

Hey Mike-

Would your parents consider adopting me?

I am house-broken and sleep through the night.

Such a great story, thank you for sharing it and the cards. A couple of years ago my wife gave me my dream card, a gorgeous Unitas RC, for Christmas and it means even more to me having acquired it that way rather than purchase. Your Dad has accomplished making cards a tradition and that transcends the hobby by far.

71buc 12-26-2016 10:59 AM

Bob, Your daughter has great taste. You too are a very lucky man. Rob and Robbie, thanks for the nice comments. I'm not a very wealthy man financially. However, when it comes to family blessings I would make the Forbes list of the wealthiest men alive.

RayB and Neal, Thanks for the comments. I have searched for 3 years to find a mid-grade example like this one. I am closing in on finishing my Willie Topps run. I have the 53, 64, 67 and 73 to go. Most of my Mays cards are in the 3-6 range.
