I liked this same concept so much from the post-war baseball section so here goes.....

I don't focus on pre war rookies but I do like very early HOF cards, premiums etc...

Now I can post it in the correct thread

I had one of those caramel Joe Jackson cards years ago, and gave it away convinced it was a reprint or fake. It just had to be. Not many real ones in existence.

I still do. Probably best to just look at my imageevent site. I have about 50 or so that I still haven’t scanned and added, but I’ll get around to it some time…

Here’s a random assortment from my HOF “earliest” collection:

I collect the RCs of Sam Rice from 1917 (please ignore the E122 Am. Caramel of Rice in the 2nd group). Also shown is a RC of Sam's manager for the Washington Senators.

Damn. Less than 10 posts into this thread and there's already too many awesome cards to count.

Impressive stuff, guys.

I never get tired of posting Johnson's rookie from the 1908 PC760 Rose Company postcard set.

I don't go out of my way to collect (I always thought the extra demand/cost for them was not justified...about time some folks should tell me to stay away from this thread), but sometimes rookie HOF cards come a droppin' my way.

Here is my slenderized rookie W514 card of Ross Youngs, cleverly disguised as Pep Young. Check out his forehead shadowing, cleverly disguised as a wrinkle combover. Not to mention the offset goatee, eyelid, mini-mustache, and neck shadowing, all cleverly disguised as parts of a fingerprint.

The Joe Jackson caramel is a great card, but unfortunately he is only a HOFer in some of our eyes. 😔

You are right I should not have posted it. Sorry

I overstepped and hoped that someday he would be eligible and then get elected

bcbgcbrcb 12-31-2022 05:13 PM

Love the Rose postcard, Kevin. That was one that I was never able to pick up when I was doing my original BB HOF Rookies set along with the Tris Speaker Rose. Is it still believed that the Rose Speaker doesn’t exist?

Thanks Phil. The 1908 Rose Co postcard of Johnson was my White Whale for years.

I always hold out hope that a Speaker exists in the set, but it is doubtful. Speaker showed up on a checklist back in 1982, but no image exists and no one that I know of has ever claimed to have seen one.

If he does exist, he is not part of the original 192 card set that was issued in 1908. Each of the 16 teams had 12 players issued and all 12 Red Sox are accounted for. He was a rookie in 1908 and only played in 31 games, so it easy to see why he was not one of the 12 Red Sox that were produced in 1908.

The Rose Company did issue about 10 additional players in 1909 in order to update some roster changes. These players differ from the original set of 192 cards as the type on the front is in a different font and their teams are omitted.

IF Speaker was produced, he would surely be part of the 1909 subset of "updates."

Great info, Kevin.

Thanks!

Kevin, that Wajo is unreal.

I collect players, which means I would like to have the rookie of each player, when possible.

Some absolutely incredible cards. I'd love to collect Pre-War in general but it's a little rich for my tastes at the moment. Good thing the Hobby is a lifelong dedication!

Thanks Jeff (Happy New Year). Your collection ain’t half bad either! ;)
