1949 Jackie Robinson Barnstorming Tour Program

Just received this albumen photo from England. I assume it is soccer, but no cleats on shoes and the hats don't make much sense.

The hats were part of the uniform, though not used during play. The knit stocking cap was common as was the cricket style cap.

As for the boots - from a site on the history of football boots:

Players would wear their hard, leather work boots, which were long laced and steel toe-capped as the first football boots. These football boots would also have metal studs or tacks hammered into them to increase ground grip and stability.

As laws become integrated into the game in the late 1800’s, so saw the first shift in football boots to a slipper (or soccus) style shoe, with players of the same team starting to wear the same boots for the first time. Laws also allowed for studs, which had to be rounded. These leather studs, also known as cleats, were hammered into the early football boots, which for the first time moved away from the earlier favoured work boots.

Thanks. I have seen a lot of 1800's soccer team albumens, but never the stocking cap. Also could not find any examples googling 1800's British soccer team photos.

Love the Brewers newsprint photos... great find!!

Look for the image of the Royal Engineers AFC from 1872. Try history of British Football on wiki.

Those stocking caps don't look at all like the ones in my photo.

I think the image is a rugby team.
If you compare your photo with this British late-19th century Keens Mustard tin with Rugby scene... the uniforms look very similar, including the toques.

That was my first impression on this also except for the fact that the ball is on the floor and it looks like a football (soccer ball) and not a rugby football. The first ones to use a rubber bladder, made by Richard Lindon in the 1840's, were slightly oblong (buttonball).

Same thoughts here. I will post a close-up of the ball later - it appears to be round, but I will be interested to hear your opinions.

Picked up these programs in the Huggins & Scott auction. These are from the independent league team the Cranston Firesafes. Yogi Berra played there under a pseudonym "Casuno" while stationed in the northeast during WWII.

A few of my recent pickups. The Rent a Seat Cushion sign is from Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

I just added this 1971 Clemente pinback to my 71 Bucs collection. It is a very scare item and one of three I have ever seen in 40+ years of collecting. It has been a bit of a white whale for me. Although I'm certain I over paid, I'm thrilled to have finally landed it:D

Thanks Scott and Rob. Rob I don't think my foolishness will come to an end anytime soon. I know there is a thread discussing these particular pinbacks. This one appears to be yet another variation as the placement of the autograph differs from the example of this pin Howard posted.

Autograph placement varies on the Mays pins, as well. There is also one with no autograph.

Just picked up this pretty beaten up program from the Jackie Robinson All-Stars 1949 tour. This is a program for a specific game, unlike the standard program which was generic for the tour. Anyone seen these before?

HOF Hoyt Wilhelm no-hitter ticket stub
 

I was fortunate to recently add this really nice ticket stub to HOF'er Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter against Don Larsen and the NY Yanks 1-0 on 9/20/58 @ Baltimore.
Hoyt Wilhelm is known as a knuckleballing relief specialist over his great career that spanned over 1000 games, but he actually started out as a starting pitcher.
Tickets to Wilhelm's no-hitter are very scarce. I know of only 3 that I am aware of in the hobby and I now own two of them.

Good question.
I now have tickets to 206 different no-hit games dating back to 1901.
296 no-hitter games have been pitched through 2017.
147 of my no-hit tickets are signed by 153 different pitchers as some no-hitters were combo no-hitters that involved more than one pitcher.
33 of the 206 no-hit tickets were to games pitched by HOF pitchers...

Here's one guy that has pitched two no-hitters so far.

Love the look of that Sisler bat. Even when they are retail models, those Bone Rubbed 250's are beauties. BTW do the weight and length match up to bats that he ordered?

Thanks Mark. This bat measures at 35 and weighs 36.5 - 37 ounces and is hand turned no inch marks on the knob.

Pretty jazzed to have won this 1930 Louisville Colonels Panoramic photo from the currently closing Hakes auction.....only pano on Louisville I've ever seen. Billy Herman's last year in the minors..........

Nice photo...interesting head gear...just saw one similiar Sunday at a flea...Good image, size, and original oak frame and wavy glass sort of had me...but saving for a show so didn't get it...didn't hit the "gotta have it" level...sorry for reflection glare...should have taken more time for better shots...the huge rugby ball was the best part...in hind site...may grab it if gal still has it next time if I see her...

1931 Houston Buffalos With Dean and Medwick
 

Picked up this panoramic photo of the 1931 Houston Buffalos that has need torn in half. In the photo are Jerome Dizzy Dean and Joe Ducky Keswick. Living one town over from Medwicks home town I am happy to have it in my collection.

You just reminded me that I should pick up an 1800's frame to put the photo in.

I was surfing Astros stuff on ebay during the World Series when I spotted the following item - a program from the first game I ever went to, even scored (Marichal threw a complete extra-inning game). What are the odds? Marichal threw 25 complete games that year, 3 were extra innings. This one went 11 but the scorer gave up after 10.

Not worth a lot of money but I really liked the way this newspaper looks with Cy Young from 1904.

Just won some bunting from the World Series games played in Houston. This was similar to buying furniture for a room, as I felt it was necessary for my man-cave and would rather have this on the wall than any piece of furniture I can think of. How's that for rationalizing? I further rationalized that I needed two of them...
