Stamp on back of T202/ Sept 6, 1912 & Sept 7, 1912

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
While cataloging my collection, I noticed that on the back of a Walter Johnson/ Gabby Street T202, the Black Hassan back has a stamp in purple with the date, "Sept 6, 1912" on all three panels, and a 4th stamp with the date Sept 7, 1912 at the bottom of the center panel. Possible tax stamp?

Has anyone else come across this type of stamping?
Let mme know. Thanks, Patrick.

Posted By: David
It's probably just the collector's stamp. Many of us have come across old cards with personal stamps on the back.

Many news service photos have date stamps on the back, sometimes multiple stamps from different dates (sometimes years apart). The stamp was used to either date the creation, as part of filing/cataloging, or during printing if the the photo was used to make a picture in/on a publication or commercial product ... Conceivably, the date stamping could indicate that a card was some sort of production or file sample.

Posted By: Brian C.
I picked up a T205 from Kit Young years ago with a 10/2/11 back stamp. About 15 years later, I bought two t-206s from Sportscardsplus with, you guessed it, each having a 10/2/11 back stamp. I suspect they're from one person's collection.

Fortunately, it fooled him. After he died, the original was brought out again.

Pardon the digression.
