1933 Goudey collectors here ?
One of my favorite looking set is the 1933 goudey.
Any 33 goudey collector here ? Anyone here have a complete set ? Your set is with or without the Lajoie ? I also added a little poll to see how many goudey collector we have on this board. I start this thread if anyone want to share is 33 goudey beauty here or speak about this beautifulll set ! |
When I first got into prewar as a teen my first prewar card bought for me was a t206, but the first card I purchased was a 33 Goudey. I wanted to do the entire set eventually, but I am very slow and doubt I will get there because I enjoy just adding new sets. Also I have become less willing to pay more money for a certain card just because that player was considered good (most of my cards are "common" players).
If I ever do complete the set Lajoie will not be in it, since he doesn't have 33 Goudey card. He has 1934 Goudey card (based off the year on the card) that was made to fill a gap in the 33 set. |

For my part in the futur i want to build a goudey set. I really love that set and when i will go ahead and build the set i will have the Lajoie in it for sure...
I really love the story behind the lajoie card. |
I don't, but wouldn't mind getting my hands on a few of them. I love the Pepper Martin card.

i'm about 30 cards short of finishing my mid-grade set. most likely i'll get a lajoie RP and dirty it up to look like the rest. the ruths and gehrigs are tolerable, but $20k for a baseball card is a hard check to write.

I used to have a few dozen of them -- all gone now -- but not to collect the set. It just happened that way because I like them.

In 2009, I started collecting again after a long hiatus. Bought an upper deck goudey box and eventually put together the base + sp set. While searching ebay for modern goudeys. I ran across some real ones and thought I should grab one just for fun. 1933 Goudey Travis Jackson was the first pre-war card I bought and launched me into pre-war collecting. I collected all the hofers (minus Lajoie and the 2nd Gehrig) in 09, 10, and 11. Then last summer I decided to go for the rest of the set.
As usual I'm in the raw "fair/good/vg" neighborhood I'm now 15 shy for the set (counting Lajoie and a 2nd Gehrig) and my list of hofers to upgrade is at 16. here's a photo with the Manush upgrade I just received from Jason in front of my hall of fame cheese box. |

The '33 Goudey's represented my return to baseball card collecting after a 25 year hiatus. I used to collect cards as a kid in the early to mid 70's, but was met with a mother that "couldn't remember where she put my cards" when questioned about returning the cards of my youth to me as a 38 year old. That is when I turned to vintage and began my foray with the '33 Goudeys, a set which seemed "completable" and I loved their appearance.

I think it's a sweet looking set. I try to buy 1 goudey a month. I've been doing it now for about a year. I'm up to 13 cards. My goal is a set in PSA 6.

The 33 Goudeys are my favorite set of all time. I once had a set about 75% done but had to sell off most of the cards. I have kept only 5 of my favorites but intend on tackling the set again. I doubt I'll get a Lajoie but you never know. What do low grade examples of the Lajoie go for? Jim |

Love the Goudeys..
My first prewar HOF pickups were a '34 (not '33) Goudey Gehringer and a T206 Waddell pitching, and these sets were the foundation for my prewar interest. I've since completed the HOFer run in both sets (minus Plank/Wagner and the '33/'34 Lajoie). I'd like to finish the Goudey set someday (need a few more Scott Forrest lots for that to happen), but am in no hurry.. No desire to go after the full T206 set, but love both sets.

I only have eight of them but all are HOFers. I think the 33 Goudeys and the 34 Diamond Stars are the most attractive cards. The 33 Goudey Klein and Herman are beautiful and my favorites in that set.

Would love to complete this set in psa 5 ish level (and already have some of the big$$ cards) but would be a looooooong road!! I would be happy to have it done even without the nap... Great thread. Love to hear the significance of this set to so many collectors...

I have a collector grade set minus both Gehrigs and Ruth's 53, 149, 181, and of course the Lajoie. I consider mine complete. When I win the lottery I'll fill in the missing pieces.

Beautiful cards, i am a Yankee collector, and almost have the Yankee team set in 33 goudey. Just missing one Ruth (with the red background) and one of the 2 Gehrigs because i wont pay the money to buy two virtually identical cards.
Also have a few others in my Dodger and Giants and Jewish collections. Lessor condition on the superstars, but i love them just the same. |

I was also brought back into card collecting by the '33 Goudey's, had never collected vintage until I was able to purchase a decent sized lot after a friend's dad had passed away. They are also the reason I eventually found this site.

I have been working on the set for six years. Three cards from completion. Gehrig #160, Ott #127 and Lajoie #106. Ott just takes finding the right one. Gehrig and Lajoie just take some major bucks. :eek:

(39 of the 67 are HOF'ers) For the most part, I am concentrating on the PSA 4 level, but will probably make some exceptions with the more expensive cards. --definitely will get a reprint Lajoie-- For the most part this seems to be a completable, but I am curious and have a question for the people whom have completed or almost completed this set. Are there any of the 33 Goudey cards that were more difficult to find? I am talking about commons and or star players aside from the obvious higher dollar cards.

Every card in the set can be found in mid grade quite easily. There is no reason not to be selective regarding price and eye appeal. This is not a set where you need to grab any old card because you might not ever see another one.

Nice Goudeys. Did you know that Billy Urbanski was born in Linoleumville, New York? My extensive research leads me to believe that the town may have been named after the floor covering linoleum. :eek:
I am now researching whether Floyd Vaughan and hall of famer Arky Vaughan are the same person. :rolleyes: Who says that the Goudey set isn't interesting or mysterious enough. :D:D:D |
