I'm a little thin on Yankees WS stuff but coincidentally this aerial photo of Yankee Stadium arrived yesterday courtesy of our irreproachable friends at Legendary. It depicts Game 1 of the 1941 World Series. In my six decades I have seen the wonders of Athens and Rome and Lethbridge, Alberta, visited Mayan ruins in Palenque and Oaxaca, and I have walked on the Great Wall of China, but this old ballyard, the House that Ruth Built, is still the grandest edifice my eyes have beheld. When they tear it down I am going to die a little bit.

I showed this once before but it certainly belongs in this thread. My uncle and I were featured on the front page of the Bergen Record a few days ago and appeared on New Jersey News12. Channel 2 wanted to do a story as well but ran out of time...

Sorry, but I had to do it. Oh how I hate the Yankees.

Hate all you want. That hatred feeds the Yankees and their desire to win. Almost every other owner is thrilled when they are merely able to compete. For the last 36 years, the Yankees have been owned and run, by people who demand to win, not just compete.

Do they spend more? Sure. Their tickets, concessions, parking, and especially, TV revenue, generate more money than the other teams. What do you suggest that they do with that money? Other owners pocket that money. Steinbrenner spends it. When the league charges a luxury tax, he kicks in his share, and other owners pocket that too. They know that their fans will accept losing on a regular basis. Yankee fans won't. Did you know that in the last year reported, only four major league teams lost money. Some losing teams make millions of dollars in profits every year. Steinbrenner has always invested it back in the team.

I have no idea what team you root for. It doesn't matter. Blaming the money is easy, because it can't fight back. But the owners who point to money are using misdirection to convince their fans that their management is not at fault.

It was a joke so dont get too riled up, but the Yankees have been buying the best players in Baseball since 1919. In the old days it was by paying the minor league teams the highest amount for promising players, now it is through Free Agency. It is not a new thing.

Are they the most successful Franchise in Sports History? Yes

Do they run a great business from a monetary standpoint? Yes

Do they break any rules by buying all the best players in Baseball? No

As a fan do I hate their guts? Absolutely!



Dont take it personally or get upset, just one fans opinion.

Absolutely no problem. I wasn't, and don't, take it personally at all. I assumed your post was good natured as was my reply.

FYI, I have lived and died (mostly died) for the Seattle Mariners since I was a tiny kid in the Kingdome in the early 1980's. They will never be the Yankees as a franchise and that is ok, but if they EVER win a single World Series, I PROMISE I will cherish it more than any Yankee fan cherishes any individual championship they have ever won!

As a Reds fan (and the way baseball is now structured), I seriously doubt I will live long enough to see them win another World Series. I would do well to live another 30 years, and would guess the odds are severely against them winning another one in that time-frame.

At least I lived to see '75, '76 and '90... which was a miracle. I now live in Seattle, and would love to see the Mariners do it too. If it's any consolation, the odds for the M's are much greater than for the Reds. At least they can contend...

the fellow that has a big X on him was New York sportswriter and Lou Gehrig confidant Fred Lieb. Walsh is next to Ruth on the far right.

Here I was at the game last night not realizing that I had at the same time obtained new Yankees World Series memorabilia! Had to share.

What a game! What a team!

Since the Yankees won last night and all is right in the baseball world, I can post this lot sold by Heritage back in October 2005. It's Casey Stengel's line-up card from Game Seven of the 1960 World Series, a nightmare game for Yankees fans. Hopefully last night (and almost a half century since Mazeroski broke our hearts) will take the sting out a bit. Check out all the player changes--you can really get a sense of the desperation. It sold for $5,378 incidentally.

Mickey's Walk off called shot in the '64 Fall Classic. Mickey said this was one of his most memorable home runs.

Here is the ticket stub from the game in which Mickey stepped on the sprinkler head, tore up his knee & effectively ended his rookie season--it was just the beginning of his great career despite 18 yrs of injuries.

10/6/52, Ebbetts. Though a lesson in futility. Bklyn turns a rare 3-6-4 DP (Hodges, Reese and Robbie). But Yanks prevail 3-2 in Game 6.

Don Larsen Perfect Game 1956 WS Game 5
 

Here are some of my favorite items from Don Larsen's Pefect Game in 1956:
1) The front of my 1956 game 5 stub- signed by Larsen an noting the final score
2) The verso of the same stub. I never have minded owning a ticket to a historic game where the patron neatly capyures the moment in vintage ink. In this situation, for my collection, I believe that this enhances the appeal.
3) My Larsen Perfect Game signed ball. Check out the inscription, which is pretty rare. It's unusual to see Larsen ever write out the entire inscription "World Series Perfect Game" with the date 10/8/56.
4) An original fan photograph IN COLOR of the scoreboard after the final out. This is a first generation photo printed from the original negative. Virtally every photo of this game that you ever see was shot in B/W. Pretty neat!
5) A Burke/Brace signed postcard of Larsen.

GREAT shots of the '36 Series, Anthony. I've always loved those images of Gehrig crossing home plate triumphantly...and really, can you beat a clean Stadium shot from that year?

Here's the newest piece in the thread, the ball Matsui hit into the second deck of the right field stands of Game Six. It's a pretty cool story, because the guy who caught it is donating all proceeds to the Haiti earthquake recovery effort (and Heritage is likewise donating its commissions). We also got in touch with Matsui at Angels training camp, and he is autographing the ball next week.

Here is a 1953 World Series Gene Woodling gets greeted by teammates after a HR.

Like the topic. Elmer Miller was the lead off batter for the 1921 World series and was literally the first Yankee to get a hit in a World series and later on Ruth drove him in being the first Yankee to ever score a run in a world series. The date was october 5, 1921. Have 10 different varieties of cards and he was a relative.
