Posted By: <b>Bill Todd</b><p>So my wife and I are going to see an attorney in a couple days to have our will and trust documents updated, and I know that one of the questions we'll hear is, "Are there any significant assets you need to include?" I wanted to prepare her for the answer she's going to hear from me and she about fell over when I told her how much this box full of old cardboard is worth.<br /><br />My question: She has exactly zero knowledge of cards and memorabilia, and even less interest (if that's possible). Is anyone else in a similar situation, and if so, what kind of instructions have you left for after you're dead and gone? Put 'em out on the curb in the rain? Give 'em all to Leon?<br /><br />Not that I'm planning on kicking off anytime soon, but there are plenty of lunatic drivers around here, and you just never know.<br /><br />Bill

He told me that my email was one of three that he'd given instructions for his wife to send messages too if he was gone with instructions on liquidating his cards. These were not vintage (I never looked at vintage cards until a year ago) but they were substantial in volume \ worth. Mine were too and so I gave my wife a note with his email and that of two others I chatted with regularly online as well. I felt like I knew these guys well enough to know they would not screw her over and get her the best value for the cards. I still think that today. Hopefully you can find such people. But obviously you have to "know" them as best you can first.

Posted By: <b>Frank Wakefield</b><p>Until this Memory Lane mess I would have thought that leaving the names of 2 or 3 auction houses was the correct course.<br /><br />Now I think it is not. What is reputable today may not be so when the time comes. Instead, this idea of leaving the names, addresses, and email addresses for 2 or 3 trusted friend / collectors seems the best way to go.

(Cannot leave a will, since I was on Medical (Medicaid) for many years, and Socal Security Disability, and kept being asurred that they would drop by and collect ALL my valuables that were left when i die. I've already given some stuff away.<br /><br />And am living off the proceeds from the rest.

Posted By: <b>Bill Stone</b><p>This raises again the need for a Vintage Baseball Card Museum so those of us who would like to donate our cards at death could do so - or by prior arrangement the survivor could be assured of a fair price for the cards in return for the donation. But for the time being I would leave a list with a few names of advanced collectors who should be contacted about the cards in the event of death --the important thing at the moment however is to be sure the family knows they are valuable -(-or just leave them to Leon )

Just a word of advice to those who dont know,if you lived a good life and you have Ty Cobb cards dont bother bringing them,he uhh,doesnt play in the league youll be watching.<br /><br /> Just think,instead of giving cards to some careless person youll actually help your collector friends who have the same cards as you because youll be permanantly taking cards of the market,thereby increasing the value of the ones still left

Posted By: <b>Ed McCollum</b><p>The only vintage I have is T206s, but there are several there from purchases long ago that are worth quite a bit now, even as beaters. The unique ones I've started the process of sending to SGC to have slabbed. That way, it should at least make my son and wife wonder why these were handled differently than those still in the binder. One of those has a post it note on the back with the names and e-mail addresses of two collectors, both on this board, who have expressed an interest in that particular card. They know to contact them (in order) to see if either is still interested. Then the main note says to post here on the board and let everyone know the rest are to go on eBay and make what they can from the cards. All are scanned and saved on a disk, so they will have decent high-res images to accompany each. <br /><br />My son will probably take his proceeds and buy Star Wars stuff. My wife will invest in vineyards, one bottle at a time.
