Posted By: barrysloate
The amount of illegal activity going on on ebay, and the number of fake email messages being sent out under the guise of ebay or paypal, is truly alarming. And they feel the best way to deal with it is to hide bidders' identities, thus keeping everybody a little more in the dark. Something has got to change here.

Posted By: David Smith
Michael,

Why deal with eBay? Why don't you call the FBI and your state's Attorney General's office?

eBay probably already knows who these people are because they have probably pulled this stunt with other auctions. The FBI can go after the scum for interfering with interstate commerce. You can talk to your AG and tell them this is why you they should put pressure on eBay to NOT allow more hidden bidder info. Heck, you might even go after the scum in small claims court.

Good luck.

David

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
First off - sorry to hear about the problems with ebay... I hope you don't incur any financial losses because of it.

Food for thought...

Keeping government agencies active with internet fraud cases can only lead to a deficit in personnel. Either the employment holes will have to be filled or the cases will come to a screeching halt. The government will need more staffing to handle these cases which means someones going to have to pay for it. I can see ebay getting hit with some type of surcharge because of the number of cases that will originate from their portal. We all might get stuck paying surcharges on auctions in an effort to cover these costs. I wonder when that will begin?

Pretty soon the government might figure out exactly how much money that they are missing out on in ebay sales and there might be an internet tax on top of the surcharge to cover the fraud cases that will need to be investigated by the government agencies...

Maybe somebody will finally file a lawsuit against ebay for not providing a more safe environment for the bidding/selling community. Ebay will have to put more people on staff to monitor all of this... this costs money so we'll get hit with more fees...

ebay sucks, unfortunately it is what it is and I bet most people here would rather live with the crap than scrap the whole thing... there's definitely room for improvement... damn, 0830 and the bottles already empty... blah, blah, blah... ok, time to shut up...

Warning! my eBay Auctions were tampered with!!!

Posted By: Rick McQuillan
I have been watching this auction since you listed it. I checked on it just it a few hours ago and it looked OK. I just checked it again and it was closed. I wondered what happened to it since the high bid was much less than your original BIN.

About 2 years ago my account was accessed when I clicked on a link that told me that I won an auction. I hadn't bid on this item, and, like an idiot, I clicked on the link and logged in. The next morning I couldn't log in to my account, because someone else had changed the password. I did a search under my username and saw that I had several cell phones for sale, which was weird because I don't sell cell phones. I called ebay customer service and they took care of the problem immediately. Fortunately I had only waited a few hours to log into ebay. If I hadn't tried to log in for a week or two it could have been a real mess. My PayPal account uses a different password than my ebay account, so they couldn't access PayPal.

Good luck with this. Hopefully ebay will catch these scumbags.

Rick

Posted By: barrysloate
Rick- I had the same exact experience when I clicked on something, and a week later I found myself selling photographs of nude women under my account. True story! Not only were the photos not mine, but it was a bit embarrassing. And what did the hacker gain from it? I have no idea.

Posted By: Anonymous
My ebay account was hijacked a few weeks back. The problem was it was hijacked whilst I was in bed, so therefore a lot of auctions "sold" via buy it now.

Some buyers must not have read the auctions very well. Although selling a snowmobile from Florida and sending payment to a German account might seem normal to some, it doesn't to me. I also happened to be storing that snowmobile next to my tractor that I was also selling

I had emails asking all sorts of questions about the items, and some telling me that payment was on it's way (one guy was about to deposit $3200 into the bogus paypal account).

I emailed the buyers asap when I found out, so I think they didn't send the money, then got onto ebay live help and got everything sorted out.

Not sure how it happened though as I never click on links or open attachments in emails, and always do everything through ebay. Luckily my paypal account password was different as well so they couldn't access the funds.

Posted By: B.C.D.
I receive bogus "second chance" offering s all th e time prior to auctions closing. somply put,the idiots who send them don't even look at the closing times or date.Just as dumb are those who send you a notice three minutes after an auction ends offering you a card for your "bookmark" bid of $200.00 when the card sold for $3587.87. I usually write back asking if they will take $125 and to provide a name and address to report them.

BcD

Posted By: Corey R. Shanus
My eBay account too was recently compromised. Somebody accessed it and was running literally several hundred auctions selling high-priced items such as farm equipment and speed boats. EBay got wind of it, cancelled all the auctions and credited my account for all accrued fees. When I had a computer specialist come to my home and office to check my computers for viruses (I couldn't think how else somebody could have gotten my account info as I am very careful about not disclosing it or being duped by fake emails), this specialist told me he had heard that eBay's system had been compromised and that could very well have been the way my account info got into the wrong hands. Needless to say he did not find any viruses on any of my computers, so at this point I feel it was through someone hacking eBay's system that confidential info got disclosed.

Posted By: dan lundrigan
I think the reason we rarely if ever hear about these scumbags being caught is.

1: They are getting away with it.

2: E-bay doesn`t want anyone reading about the bad press from hackers stealing accounts and hi-jacking auctions. They would prefer to keep it hush- hush and not let people know that anything is wrong and just keep letting the $$ roll in.

How comfortable would you feel if you were new to E-Bay and set up an account.Knowing that your personal info could easily fall into the wrong hands.Because E-bay was as secure as the wild west? They don`t want you to know about the problems because it affects their bottom line!

Bad press is bad for business! Unless you`re a gangsta Rapper!
