2019 Topps Now Pete Alonso First Major League Home Run - photo used on the card

Am I the only one wondering about the photo used for the 2019 Topps Now Pete Alonso First Career Home Run card (#32)?

You can't see his face, and you can't see his uniform number, so it could be anybody on the card!

Was this really the best photo Topps could get by the time they had go to print?

It reminds me of the photos Topps used to use on some of the traded players, where the player is still in his old uniform but he's posing in such a manner as to cover up the team logo.

Sorry Topps, but this photo gets a big thumbs-down from me.

I agree. This isn't acceptable at all, especially this day and age.

Seriously? These cards are printed the day after they happened. Topps doesn't have agreements with every photog in the world at every game. That was the best one they could find on a tight deadline.

You get today's "Waaaaah!" Award.

Seriously, what's the rush getting them out? I'm sure, with a bit of gentle persuasion ($$$) a much better picture could be had relatively easily. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't imagine his family or himself would be all that thrilled with that card highlighting his 1st MLB home run?

It could have been the start of a new Who Am I set

Are you for real, John? Did you read every word in my post?

I know there's a deadline involved in making these cards.

Did you read the part of my post where I said "Was this really the best photo Topps could get by the time they had go to print?" That statement demonstrates my understanding that due to time pressures, they don't have the luxury of making a leisurely, relaxed evaluation of what would be the absolute best image to use on the card.

Are you sure? Are you absolutely sure? Are you sure that of all the photos Topps had to choose from, even with the deadline pressure, that was the very best one?

Who is your favorite player, John? Do you try to collect all of his cards? If you do, and if Topps Now put out a card of that player, and they used a photo like the one used for the Alonso card where you can't actually tell that the guy in the photo is who Topps says it is, would you be happy with that? Based on your response to me, your answer would have to be "yes."

I'd like to thank all of my beloved Thumbamaniacs out there for making this moment possible-- oh, wait a minute, there's been a mistake, just like at the Oscars a couple of years ago. The award actually goes to you, John. Congratulations on a job well done!

At least you can tell it's him.

They need to get with Hanna-Barbera marketing dept-his clubhouse nickname is apparently Bam Bam.

Gary Dunaier 04-16-2019 06:52 PM

Actually, his nickname is Polar Bear.

A name near and dear to the hearts of many of those here at the Net 54 forums who collect vintage baseball picture trading cards...
