1921 Shotwell Babe Ruth bought for $2.00

I saw this story on Yahoo and thought it was interesting.

I'm not buying it. All the usual indicia are there:

--An 'expert' who isn't one of the recognized TPGs that everyone in the hobby uses. Why drive it to Beverly Hills rather than Fed-Exing it to Newport Beach?

--It is always presented to some credulous local tv personality who dutifully reports whatever the card owner spews

--The owner's tearful invocation of the Lord.

--A local 'expert' for context even though he clearly isn't an expert in the specific issue or set in question, and who adds squat to the actual information but does supply the necessary financial wow factor.

Two years from now this guy is still going to be parading this raw card around trying to get someone to fork over a five figure purchase price, but no way will it ever see the inside of a TPG or a qualified AH that would send it to a TPG if it was genuine.

This story was on my local news this morning. They report the card has been “authenticated” (by God knows who) and the seller has had three seven figure offers (from, again, God knows who).

If you think about things logically, let's say you had a painting you believed to be a Picasso. Would you take said painting to your local Joe Blow antique store for authentication? Wouldn't you seek out respects experts in the field so that you could maximize the potential future sale? If you actively did not do that, wouldn't it be because deep down you know the answer to whether or not it's real? (it's not)

I think some guy named “Vinnie” was the “authenticator.”

Remind yourself of this quality research reporting next time you view a news report on a topic you don't know about.
