"Deadball era" World Series TRIVIA: my "nearby-neighbor" wins W.S. for his team

Had I lived during that era, this BB player's residence was just 15 minutes away from where we live here in Pennsylvania.

Not a well-known ballplayer, nonetheless, a World Series hero. He is depicted on a Tobacco card of that era.

Can you identify him ?

I like Bobby's thinking...someone who starred in a World Series and played for a Pennsylvania team...hoping that maybe they also lived in Pennsylvania near wherever Ted lives now. So, I will guess Babe Adams.

Mark17 04-11-2023 03:47 PM

Danny Murphy? He hit .400 and had 9 RBI in 1910. By the way, in that series, Jack Coombs was 3-0 on the mound, while hitting .385.

Mathew....Michael....Mark

Thanks for your responses....keep on searching.

It is time for a hint.....just like Babe Adams and Jack Coombs, he also is not in the T206 set.

Wild Guess

Throwing this out there as he fits the bill…

Jake Daubert

Ted,
How about Smoky Joe Wood? Though he was usually connected to the Midwest and New England, I seem to recall that he lived in Pennsylvania for quite a while.

Coombs also won 31 games during the regular season, amazing year for him.

Hi Matt
A good guess.... Jake Daubert grew up near us (40-min drive). But, Jake is not the correct answer.

George Rohe? Hero of the 06 World series

molenick 04-12-2023 01:25 PM

New guess...Wally Schang...hit .357 with 7 RBIs in the 1913 World Series...not in T206 but in T222.

He also had a high consonant-to-vowel ratio, but my guess is that the record belongs to the three players named Schwartz.

Ted, I grew up on the same street as a famous dead ball player, although I didn't know it at the time, because he lived several miles away.

Didn't expect this quiz to be so tough. Continue researching, guys.

His relatives still live nearby. One of them visited with me a couple
of years ago, at the BB card Show at the New Hope, PA Firehouse.

We had a very interesting conversation. And, I just happen to have
two Tobacco cards of his relative which I gave him.

Stories like this are what makes this Hobby really great.

Steve Yerkes scored the winning run to end the 1912 Series, in the 10th inning of the 8th game.

Interesting that T207 called him Stanley Yerkes. Stan Yerkes was a pitcher from 1901-1903, so I am not sure why they would have confused him with Steve.
