1939 Ted Williams - Centered 50/50

These folks who put centered 50/50 when selling a card like this should have an ice cream pushed into their face :)...

I don’t see the issue. The right and bottom look centered (with respect to each other), same with the top and left side.

Unless you’re referring to top/bottom and left/right centering.

Bpm0014 08-15-2018 08:43 AM

Definitely not centered either way; top nor bottom...

h2oya311 08-15-2018 09:34 AM

the card is hidden behind the little extra plastic. It is very centered (maybe 45/55) but it looks like crap because the seller didn't tap it out from behind that extra plastic. This is one of those where you could get a steal because it doesn't look centered unless you take a second look.

a steal at 25K!!!!

calvindog 08-15-2018 09:44 AM

I don't mind if a card like this is described as "well-centered" -- because it is. Just don't say "50/50" when a blind man can see it's not.

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-15-2018 10:04 AM

Yeah, I do agree with Derek that the PSA holders can create a deceptively bad centering look when the card is pushed up against the ridges. Also agree with Jeffrey, I would call this card "Nicely Centered" if it were my listing.

RedsFan1941 08-15-2018 10:19 AM

"perfect centering top to bottom" ...

great card, but not "perfect centering" ...

I think what the collecting world needs is a 4th Party Grading company that will evaluate how a card is centered within its holder. Perhaps their sticker would be like a picture frame to accentuate this all important attribute.

Maybe what they meant to say is there is a 50-50 chance the card is centered.

Haha! Didn’t even look at the price. I remember Matty (Mr. perfect centering) sharing some examples of eBay items he won where the card was pressed up and under the ridges and one or two taps and, voila, it was “perfectly centered”. That is where there can be a “steal” if the seller doesn’t present his card properly.

That would be a waste of good ice cream. I'd suggest a cow patty. :D

I think this one has much better eye appeal even if it's not perfectly centered.

Do people obsessed with perfect centering notice minor asymmetries elsewhere in life?

I do but not quite to the extent I do on cards . But my peeve is more about the term 50/50 used where it shouldn't be. I wouldn't even use it on mine....though I might say it is close to 50/50.
(that SGC 92 above rocks)
ps...Barry- nice response. :)

Indeed.

I would also note the asymmetry of things you have two of as a human.

My left foot is slightly larger than my right foot.

My right arm and hand is longer and larger than my left arm and hand.

Ears, eyes, nostrils, tonsils, clavicles, boobs, gonads, toes, etc are not identical pairs.

I must therefore conclude that I am not really well centered and accept that as fact. I would maintain that you are not centered as well.

Obsess all you want about the centering of your cardboard, just don’t look in the mirror. You may be disappointed.:D

Throttlesteer 08-15-2018 10:25 PM

There is a heavy premium for OCD. Wait until they demand the back be centered as well.

NiceDocter 08-15-2018 10:30 PM

askew

For those needing computer entertainment regarding centering, google the word "ASKEW"............. prepare yourself.

Bocabirdman 08-16-2018 04:41 AM

What's the problem? The card IS in the center of the scan.......:D

Note how even though this card is very well-centered left to right, the word "Pirates" is not -- the P extends past the picture on the left while the S is aligned. I think there should be another level of scrutiny beyond mere borders.

Peter is very sensitive about centering right now after I pointed out that the 9.5 centering on his Jeter rookie was a bit inferior. He has now realized that his Bonds rookie is in really poor condition and now he has to throw out his entire collection and start over. Not that he is alone. Just look at my embarrassing Ted Williams rookie. It's 65/35 with inferior corners a some toning. I better trade it for some well centered 1989 Fleer commons while I still can:(

I hope this one doesn't cause people viewing it to seek treatment.

robkas68 08-16-2018 06:30 AM

of course this is better

While I think everyone agrees that we should call Peter out on his poorly centered Bonds, there was a time in the dark pre-psa era where cards were simply ex-mt, vg-ex and p-f and everyone would say "really nice Williams rookie". Now you spend a small fortune on a Ted Williams rookie and then you realize that you have been duped into buying one with 60/40 centering. There are 12 psa 9s and a psa 10 and all of those collectors are laughing at you. You go on anxiety medication and explain to your children that they cannot go to college because you need the 10 and you apologize for embarrassing the family with a psa 8 Williams. Things today are so much better.

robkas68 08-16-2018 06:50 AM

sad

You are just showing me up on the Ted Williams rookie to take the focus off your crappy Bonds rookie:D

Thankfully my Bo Jackson rookie has centered lettering to go along with centered borders. Life is good.

You don't know Diddely. The full minute-long version of that commercial may be the best ad ever, IMO.

After searching for years, I ran into this recently. I'm not sure on the exact centering measurements, but it's better than I ever thought I would acquire...

Apparently Gretzky's "No" was ad-libbed.

I have read that as well. Although I'm not sure it was spontaneous genius so much as the product of having already done multiple takes of Bo knows hockey which they weren't satisfied with, and being unable to get the words out again. Notice how he hesitates a little trying to speak before he says No. But obviously they recognized the brilliance (amazingly, there are idiots who have called it racist) and went with it. It's also great how before delivering the punch line, Diddely stares at him with mock disgust for a second or two.

KingFisk 08-16-2018 10:29 AM

I don't care about the centering, I am just very, very happy to own a Ted Williams rookie.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6633e1f107.jpg
