Tell us of your challenging experience(s) working on T206 runs

If you are working on a T206 run of your favorite T206 in the 350/460 series, you don't want to get into a "wild-goose-chase" frustration. Certain 460 backs were not printed.
For example.....one of my favorites, "Turkey Mike" Donlin. Shown here are 4 of his tougher 460 cards I have in my run of Donlin. However, I am missing the BROAD LEAF 460
and LENOX backs

Although I have most of the cards (350 and 460) in this run, it will be very tough for me to complete this run because only one LENOX is known. And, it was only recently that
a BROAD LEAF 460 card was finally discovered of Donlin. Refer to thread.... https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=245043

The bright side of doing this run is that the very tough AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 and UZIT cards are NO-PRINTS due to the Mutually-Exclusive factor in the 2nd print run and
the 3rd print run of the 350/460 series cards.

Hey Ted,

Pretty simple for me - Lundgren Carolina Brights.

I honestly want it more than a Wagner, Plank or Doyle. I've seen one come up and it was at a don't want to sell it price.

E

Rhotchkiss 02-11-2022 05:12 PM

My first Tinker bat off was an Uzit, so I figured now that I have the “toughie”, the rest should be easy. Yea right…. The Piedmont factory 42 is brutal (on 3 known), the AB 460 is tough as hell, and believe it or not, the SC 350, 25 was very very difficult. Those Sweet Cap 350, 25s can be super tough. And, of course, the brown Lenox was a bear, only 1 known. I thought it would be an easy back run. It’s now complete but it was NOT easy

Also near complete on Evers Yellow Sky, Chance Yellow portrait, and Speaker.

DeanH3 02-11-2022 05:25 PM

Expense is my challenge. No way I ever afford a Drum or Broad Leaf. So I have accepted that my Matty dark cap run will never be completed. I'll just chip away and add what I can, when I can. Hopefully a Carolina Brights, Cycle or Pied 42 sometime in the near future.

bbcard1 02-11-2022 06:12 PM

I'm down to a Drum on my Davidson run. I got the Broadleaf before it got out of sight (still $800-900 or so) and got the Carolina Bright when I bought a small group of them, long since liquidated. I think there have been four graded. Some of the other backs don't have many more copies but weren't that hard to find, but I have never even gotten a sniff of a Drum.

That WaJo is a beauty Phil. I too suffer from the centered, fat bordered T206 syndrome. LOL!

Beautiful WaJo Phil!

As far as challenges, I am doing a WaJo run of both poses. Focusing on portrait, finances are definitely an issue with Old Mill. I couldn’t afford one that finally came up a month or so ago even in lowest grade. Haven’t had much luck finding the Brown Hindu either. The other few I am missing I will get at some point once I have cash.

Hey guys,

Thanks for sharing your interesting stories here. Let's continue "running" this thread with more T206 runs. I'll continue this with one of my favorite....this 460-only Series McGraw.

American Lithographic divided the 46 cards in this Series in 2 print groups. This McGraw was printed in the Exclusive 12 group, comprising of 13 different backs. Here they are......

Typical Jay- only going for the crappy players and easy back runs :)

Well, Jay killed the thread, but I'll post in it anyway. I've started and given up on a ton of back runs, always deciding I needed the $ for another new pickup. THis Dubuc run is the only one I've finished. It was actually pretty easy. The Tolstoi is impossible, so when I got it, I considered going for the run. His story is very wild, fun player to collect so I figured I'd go for it. A lot of these fell into my lap, and also happened to all be in nice but affordable shape (other than my Coupon Type 1).

Currently thinking of finishing the Clarke Portrait, Walsh, and Jimmy Collins runs, but haven't started buying the common backs yet.

Rich Falvo 02-12-2022 12:45 PM

I've been gradually working on runs of the Providence players. I knew the Broad Leaf, Carolina Brights and Drums might be out of reach, but I underestimated how hard the Tolstoi, EPDG, AB, and Cycles can be.

I have seven of the eight Cycles for the team, needing only Lavender.

My closest player run is Izzy Hoffman. If I ignore the BL and CB, then I only need Tolstoi.

atx840 02-12-2022 03:27 PM

Haven't added one in 5+ years, had secured the only know CB but someone talked the owner into consigning it and it is now tucked away in a very large collection. Need a BL350 (3-4 known) and the Victory (1).

If you happen to have a spare Lefty Leifield batting AB460 (or choose to sell yours, let me know). Great set.

KCRfan1 02-13-2022 09:46 AM

Great cards everyone!

A few questions for you:

At what point did you decide to do a back run?

What was the first back that you purchased that began the run?

How many years did it take or have you spent on the run?

Is there a back that was surprisingly difficult that should have been easier, or a back easily obtained that should have been more difficult?

Thanks all! Love the cards.

Exhibitman 02-13-2022 01:02 PM

The only run that interests me is a run of the HOFer portraits. Money stands between me and completion even without adding a green Cobb, Plank or Wagner.

53toppscollector 02-13-2022 03:01 PM

Still waiting to find the Krause EPDG and SweetCap 350/25. One EPDG sold on ebay back in November I think, but I was distracted at the time and missed the auction. That's really the only one I am hyper focused on right now, I have an ebay alert set up for any new Krause cards that get listed. Had a chance to buy the SC 350/25 about a month ago in a willow5 auction, but it was just too pricey and it was in a nice grade, I don't need something that nice.

Started the Doolin run because it looked easy with only 9 backs to get. Started with Piedmont 150 followed by the Sweet Caporal 350/25. I have both Piedmonts and all 4 Sweet Cap backs. El Principe de Galles seems to show up only when I have no money. I have only seen the Sovereign once and it sold so fast I'm not really sure I even saw it. And to this day I have never seen the Old Mill. I don't have a scan of the Sweet Cap 150/25 because my new computer and old scanner don't want to talk to each other. The Piedmont 150 was a surprise back as it was completely covered by paper when I bought it. It is still one of the most successful soaks I have ever done.

G1911 02-13-2022 03:48 PM

I have nothing as impressive as these other gentlemen, but I’ve been toying with doing a Donlin (batting) run as well, because I love his T213-2 card with the unique “.300 batter 7 years” tag line.

My T206 challenge has oddly been getting a low grade beater of Livingston. Livingston’s T205 was my first T card I owned, so I’d like his T206 as well. It’s been 15 years now since I started casually looking, bidding the going rate or a couple bucks under every time I come across one on eBay. My records indicate I have had the #2 bid on Livingston’s on eBay 47 different times. Eventually I get one for the going rate. It’s fairly amusing such a total common has become such a long search. I’ve easily gotten over 100 other T206’s but the one I specifically want always seems to go for a few pennies over my bid.

Ted, I, too, have been chipping away at a back run of old glove showing. It's been slow, but I have a nice little bunch going; Tolstoi, AB 460, Sov. 460, all SC facs, Prince of Wales and just picked up in the last Sterling auction a Piedmont 350-460 OP fac 42. But seriously doubt I can go much further, given the prohibitive cost of the Red Hindu and Uzit reverses. To me, the card's likeness truly resembles McGraw in real life: pugnacious, crusty and arrogant.

The pride of my T206 collection at one time was a Griffith batting PSA 7 with a Drum back. I sure wish I had held on to that bad boy. John

Hi John.....this McGraw run totals 13 backs.

The Red HINDU of this McGraw is not that tough to find; therefore, it usually doesn't command a really outrageous price.
The UZIT is virtually impossible to find. Mine is actually the only known one (so far).

Incidently....I think you meant to say "SWEET CAP 350-460 Fac. 42 OP", instead of PIEDMONT. McGraw was not printed with the PIEDMONT 350-460 Factory #42 back.

First, I will start this run with my "MEGA T206" of Mickey Doolan, which motivated me to do this T206 run several years ago.

I have always liked this action pose, it's a favorite of mine. Anyhow, this run started when I purchased this T3 from Don H. in Portland, Maine.

.http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...3Doolan25x.jpg .http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...Doolan25xB.jpg

This run would be relatively easy, since there are only 9 different backs needed to complete it. But, I still need the BROAD LEAF 350 card. According to my A-B-C-D theory,
DRUM is possible; however, no DRUM has been confirmed as of this date. Furthermore, this Doolan card belongs to a very interesting group of 350-only Series cards which
were not printed with these 4 popular 350-only Series backs. Namely... CAROLINA BRIGHTS .... EPDG .... OLD MILL .... POLAR BEAR.

Not a back run... but a "front run". I made the unfortunate mistake pleasurable decision to try to collect all 613 Sweet Caporal factory 25s in all three series:

150s - 150 variations (not including Plank/Wagner)
350s - 394
460s - 69

Currently I have 547/613 needing 66 more cards - including 19 HOFers (3 Cobbs, 4 Youngs, 2 Wajos and 3 Mattys $$$$). I always said this would be a ten year project, but with the price of some that I'm missing, it may be a lot longer. However it is a fun project that keeps me in the game. When I find a tough factory 25 for a reasonable price, it keeps me going.

Here are the 460s, the first subset I finished. Most have been cracked for my binder.

I refer to these guys as the Exclusive 12 of the 460-only Series. This group of 12 are unique within their Series because the other subjects in the 460-only Series were
NOT PRINTED with the red HINDU back.
In 2013, I started this red HINDU run with Tannehill. I went "gung-ho" to see how quick I could get all 12 of these HINDU's. Amazingly within one month I acquired 10
of them. However, it took me over a year to finally get Sheckard.

Hi Jon

As you know, I have been going for an ambitious master set of the 12 cards I refer to as the Exclusive 12 (460-only Series). Each of these 12 were printed with 13 backs.

Hummel is included in this group of 12. I have yet to find a Hummel with an EPDG back. My experience collecting this group of cards is that CYCLE 460, EPDG, OLD MILL
are much tougher to find than the other 9 backs. And, it is practically impossible to find a UZIT card of these 12 guys.

Anyhow, if I find an EPDG of Hummel, I will contact you. Am I guessing correctly that this card is the last one you need to complete your EPDG run ?

Also, will I see you at the Philly Show in three weeks ?

fkm_bky 02-16-2022 09:14 PM

I started the Herzog Boston run knowing I will never complete it as there is only one know example of the Uzit back. I'll have to consider it compete without it as I can't see it coming up for sale, or me wanting to pay what the asking price would be. I still love the chase. Really only tougher one's remain for me (AB460, EPDG & Cycle 460 will be very difficult to come by, but hopefully not impossible).

You smoked me out, Ted. Yes, it's the last one I need for the whole thing. ... Don't know yet about Philly, but I'm hoping to go. Will keep you posted.

EPDG Hummel

And thank you Ted for offering to help! If anyone can find an EPDG Hummel, it's you!! :D

I guess I’ll play too

I guess I have some to show too. Here’s my Dahlen run that Jay copied me on. Yeah, I said it. ;)

I believe the Boston EPDG was my last one I needed and Scott was gracious to make a trade with me when I bought him a Hindu.

The Brooklyn Old Mill I got early on but it is the toughest of the Brooklyns but not terrible.

And Smith

The Frank Smith white cap card has always intrigued me as it’s one of the lowest pop commons that isn’t considered a rarity. The EPDG is definitely the toughest of the group, but I have 3 of them. The Tolstoi is also a huge pain and it took me a long time to finally spend up and get one.

Big fan of this card obviously.

Big thumbs up on the Smith White Cap run Jeff! I still need an EPDG and a Tolstoi to finish mine. :(
