I believe the D327 Holsum Bread cards with this back variation were issued earlier than the cards with the back variation Leon showed above, which I believe were issued in 1921. It's interesting to note that SGC gave the same date to both variations.

One of these D310 cards has risen more than the others. At yeast that's what I think happened with the Arrelanes.

1921 Clark's Bread: Duffy Lewis

2 Attachment(s)
George E. "Duffy" Lewis. Left fielder with the Washington Senators in 1921. 1,518 hits and 38 home runs in 11 MLB seasons. 3-time World Series champion. Member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. He debuted with Boston in 1910-1917. He teamed with Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper to comprise Boston's "Million-Dollar Outfield". During his tenure, the Red Sox won three World Series championships. He was so admired for his defense playing in front of the Green Monster, that the incline leading up to the wall in left field became known as "Duffy's Cliff". The incline was reduced in 1934 and eliminated in 2005. His most productive season was 1912 as he posted a .346 OBP with 109 RBIs in 664 plate appearances.

I do believe this is a 1921 Koester Bread card hand cut from a promotional poster before the 1921 Giants-Yankees World Series.

https://www.collectorfocus.com/image...oester-burkett

I also know for a fact that Jesse is not my father or grandfather.

Yoda 03-27-2024 12:41 PM

I wonder if the bag Jesse is carrying contains fungo balls or hand grenades?

If he were a relative, the answer would be hand grenades.

Until a small group of these came out, they were fairly rare for years...

I know Leon has heard this story, but few others likely have...

A 1,000,000 years ago when I was a Punk-Ass kid with more smarts than money, I was asked to set up at a Coin Show as a "Guest Token Baseball Card Dealer"!

A Coin Dealer brought me a STACK of Greiner's - a complete set plus a couple of duplicates if memory serves, but it may not...

We couldn't find them in "The Big Book" as only prices for Tharp's were listed.

I tried to explain that Tharp's and York's and Sweetman's and Greiner's, and Yuengling's, etc. were all essentially the same set - just different advertisers like Tobacco cards.

But as I said, I was only a Punk-Ass kid trying to deal with a Grown Man!

Anyway, we could NOT agree on a price for Lot, but he sold me the only duplicates that he had - the McGraw and Speaker that I still have today.

I lost touch with the Coin Dealer and have NO IDEA what happened to the rest of the Greiner's cards that he had.

Nobody wanted those UGLY BLACK & WHITE cards anyway...

It was this "Near Find" that brought me to NET54....

The short answer is no. The supplemental set promoted in the Koester bakery’s
contained only New York players, Some of them, like Burkett, were unique to the World Series set.

When Frank stands in front of a floor to ceiling mirror, he sees the full poster.

Cool story Greg...no wonder why the Greiner's card are so elusive, and why I hadn't seen them before. Someone either has a whole set stashed away, or this set got lost for all eternity.

Brian, I'm lovin' your H-to-H cards. To me, they are one of the sweetest, if not the sweetest, ad-back cards.

Haffner's Bread cards are pretty scarce. I'd sure love to obtain one of Sam Rice.

Thanks Brian - I'm AFRAID the latter, but one can always hope that there's STILL a set in the Niagara Falls, NY Area...
