1959 Home Run Derby Set
 

Saw an almost complete set of 1959 Home Run Derby cards up for auction on eBay. I haven't ever seen a set of these before and was wondering what the history is behind them and also if the price it's up at is reasonable normal price for a PSA graded set like this one is?

My understanding is that they were given out at card dealers in 1960. Valuation is a tough one given that they seldom come up for sale. I had a near complete set--missing just the announcer. They were primarily in lower grade, with most grading out between a 1 and 4, mostly due to pin holes. I put a value on the 19 cards (missing the announcer) at about $2500 at that time. Prices vary, and this set appears to be in better all around shape than mine was.

Thanks, for that info! I'm pretty new to collecting and enjoy learning about these uncommon cards.

In 1959 my father bought a American Motors Rambler....at that time they were sponsoring the TV show Home Run Derby....the dealer gave me 20 complete set....in 1968 I wrote about the set in the Ball Card Collector and was swamped with trade offers.....traded 19 of the sets....kept one set until stopping collecting in 1980....wish I had those 20 sets today

Even though it is in black & white, IMHO this is one of the best looking post-War sets, especially when the cards are in nice condition.

Same. They are great looking cards. Here is a picture of my set. In retrospect, I wish I had kept the thing. But, I do have a nice PSA 2 Mantle left over.

They're pretty tough. Most Nationals you will see a handful available and there are usually a few on eBay. Beware the reprints: they are everywhere. I wouldn't think of buying even a low grade one that isn't slabbed.
