I guess I'll get it started this month…

A bit of deja vu, as I picked up one of these same 1965 Ernie Banks last month, too. But this one is in much better shape…and centered to boot!

1967 Punch Outs

I have a set of the 1967 Punch Out team captains. I have not attempted all the lineup variations like Larry, but do have 3 of the 4 captain pose variations. I like to have a pack with each of my sets if possible but these came packaged with two 3 card strips is a fairly frail thin plastic wrapper.

I have had a couple of wrapper for some time, and twice before sought to buy unopened packs but in each case the wrappers were open at one or both ends such that the strips could be removed and put back. One only had one strip. Finally found one with the ends sealed, although it may prove a useless purchase since any handling at all could easily "open' the pack after all these years. Size makes it impossible to seal in a plastic graded tomb. Plus, I can not store them in my set binder due to size. Have it with my 68 Action Sticker set in an Artist Portfolio binder

Very nice Al-handle with care!

I have the wax wrapper from the reissue the following year, which is nice, but those strips in the cello just look super.

Nice pick ups guys. Al - would you hazard a guess at how many exist in that condition, can't be many? My guess is you've been looking for that for a long time!

I picked up this Coates and now need 2 for the base set and 3 more variations for the master set. I would say this and Kaline are the hardest in the set to get well centered. I settled a bit on condition with this and it has a slight tilt, but I'm happy with it. This one has been a monster for me and it felt real good to cross it of my '61 checklist. Sorry for the large picture.

My bad Al- I have the wax wrapper for the 68 version of Action All Star Stickers. Here though, is the wax Punchout wrapper, from John Moran's never ending photo cave:

67 Punch Out Wrapper

Wow, never knew that existed. Thanks Dave...and John. How big is the wrapper? Do we know if it had 3 card strips or just singles, and either way how many ?

Bill---on your master 61 checklist, are you using the Registry checklist. ? If so, do not look in the show me your print variations thread here :-)

Al-My guess, if it was issued, is the strips were separated and either one or two panels came within. Project number ends in 7, not sure if they were leftovers or meant to also be sold in wax at half the cello cost.

Added these two to my '57 Topps Dodgers Team Set, only need Reese, Koufax, and Dodgers Sluggers to complete.

Also picked up this nice Robinson card. I whiffed on getting the Antonello in the same grade to get both Dodgers in this subset.

Nice additions for everyone so far this month. Picked up these two HOF's this month. The 71 Topps and 57 Topps are probably my two favorite Topps sets even though I do not own very many of either year.

Topps 1973 Reprints

Joe-- you mean Furillo ? :)

How do you suppose Topps could issue an 8 card set and get 3 of the players wrong ? And what the heck was that set all about anyway ? Topps banquet or dinner favor ? Furillo, Rosen , and MCCullough are not who they purport to be

Very nice cards JB

Al, wasn't this set supposed to be some sort of test set?? Supposedly the production was limited to 300 sets.

Very nice p/u Joe....I found another of this JR a while back in nice shape. I would have liked an entire "reprint" set from 53 just like the 8 cards that were issued (just with the correct players pictured).

Great pick up Ron. As a Japanese American whose mom and grandparents were interned in WWII, I really appreciate his place in history and some of the barriers he must have faced. His story seems under publicized and I for one am ashamed for not even knowing who he was until a few years ago. I'd love to pick up some of his cards some at some point.

Not to bad there of Ted...almost didnt notice the scratches or whatever at his ear there at first, nice centering and bold yellow color.
You'd think the back been more centered like the front.

Thank you sir.

Yea those lines are print lines by his ear. I agree. The color is really bright!

The same LCS has some great vintage stuff. Might go grab the raw 55 Teddy too.

Working on my 1964 Topps set.

Only short 81 cards now. Most stars are graded 7 with a few 7.5's and 8's. As you see the PSA 8 Stargell came from Probstien.

I had a really tough time finding a 1964 Willie Stargell in good condition for a fair price.

From much interest in the set posted by Al; I had to get the reprint set myself and there '53 counterparts. I have always found the set to be intriguing, especially with its quirks, and to find a master set or one that has been graded is a treat. (Sorry in advance for all the scans)

Interesting how they stay faithful to the 1953 design save for very minor cropping differences, but that they added advertising to the outfield wall of Newhouser's card.

1953 & 1973

Great idea matching up the counterparts Jason. Raises the question again, what the 73 set was all about. Why was it created, why those 8 players, and how did they get 3 of 8 wrong ?

jthorst75 07-17-2014 12:19 PM

Thanks Al. I would definitely would like to know more about this set but I'm getting nothing with a Google search. Correct if I am wrong but there are no 1953 Topps cards of McCullough and Furillo? I know there was a Rosen, but not sure why they used Fridley's photo instead? This is what drew me to the set with it's mysteries, and the artwork...or added artwork that is.

Al, my SCD VBC says the following about this set:

"Some sources say the cards were produced as table favors at a Topps Banquet, while at least one contemporary hobby periodical said they were sold on a test-basis in Brooklyn. It is said only 300 of the sets were made."

IMO, if this set was a test, there likely would have been more than just 300 sets produced, and they likely would have been tested outside of Topps backyard(like other "tests"). Also, if this was a "test", how did Topps incorrectly picture nearly 40% of the players in the set? If it was a test, it was obviously not a successful test.

For me, it is much easier to believe that these sets were quickly (explaining the errors) produced for a 300 person banquet.

Also, if this set was just a test in Brooklyn why did Renatta Gallasso never offer these..... she either created or offered every other reprint set through the mid-80s???

Topps Banquets

I have programs for Topps Banquets from 1959 to 1966. They are pretty nice items. I hear there was a program for 67 but I have not seen it. The only program involving cards in that period was 1964. I think the banquets continued after that but Dave Hornish says they involve cheaper paper ones. I have not seen one of those, Beginning in the the 80s through recently Topps again put out programs for the Banquets, very colorful with pictures. I think I have most of them ( missing a couple).

I had read the SCD description of the 73s and agree with you it was not likely a test issue. If for a Banquet it was sure poorly done. I have wondered if maybe it was some kind of a gag production given all the errors, but considering the likely cost, that seems a stretch as well. Here are some examples of the earlier Banquet favors/programs
