Posted By: Todd Schultz
The non-sports guys might be able to chime in about the Holloway Co., as it issued a few airplane and adventure sets back in the day. The Company was out of Chicago, and is responsible for some of my fondest childhood memories and one scary memory, as it made both Milk Duds and an all-day sucker, the Slo Poke (for those that remember, they also made the Black Cow, which was basically a slo poke dipped in chocolate). I once lost two teeth on one slo poke. The candy was real hard, again, meant to last a long time, and when I wrestled with it, I lost a tooth, then later, on the same walk back home, I pulled it out with a molar still stuck in the caramel. Scared the beejeezus out of me--thought they were all going to come out.

As for card collecting, I always wondered if this was the type of caramel that accompanied any of the E cards, or if instead those carmels were more chewable.

EDITED TO AD: seems I'm the Slo Poke, as Ed and Leon already uncovered the candy made by Holloway.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
Nice card Leon. That card is an anomoly of sorts and a shortprint, I suspect. I will let Adam or the other Exhibit heads go into it, but Albert "Dutch" Mele only played one season in the Bigs, 1937--at least 10 years before that card was issued. They probably meant to picture Sam Mele, who debuted in 1947 and who has his own 1947-1966 Exhibit cards, and I would guess they pulled the Albert card fairly early. Of course, I'm sure that all of this is what drove you to acquire the card, and not the Holloway back

Posted By: leon
Thanks for the info and experience. I have an experience to share too.

When I was 5-6 yrs old (yes, a little over 40 yrs ago) I was in our front yard having my way with a Slow Poke. I remember vividly that a car came barrelling down our neighborhood street. He must have been doing 50mph. I was right next to the street, on the walkway, and when I held my sucker up the wind from the car took the Slow Poke and splatted it all on the windshield. I think I might have BROKEN it with my sucker. I ran inside crying and never knew if it actually broke the windshield or not. I hid in my room for what seemed like hours, before I came out. Isn't it strange, the things we remember? best regards
