Need Help Dating a Ruth/Gehrig Advert

Posted By: James Feagin
Just won this last night on ebay as I stumbled onto this at the last second. It was placed in a Billboard/Programs section, so not many folks saw this. Firstly, I would like to know if this is real? Secondly, if it is real a specific time period would be helpful. I know that Gehrig won the MVP in 1927 and 1936, is there anything on here that would indicate a specific year? Thirdly, if this is real, is such an advert rare or valuable and was there a specific style associated with such? Thanks!

Posted By: jamie
authenticity? don't know but here's apparently where this item is from:

"A more spectacular exhibition took place soon after the 1927 World Series, when the legendary sluggers "Babe" Ruth and Lou Gehrig barnstormed through town as part of a nationwide tour. As part of the visit, each Yankee headed up a team (called the "Bustin' Babes" and the "Larrupin' Lous," respectively) and solicited the best local players to fill the team rosters. Their visit attracted over 3500 fans to the stadium, and many youngsters were reportedly the lucky recipients of long fly balls that day."

http://www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/84winter/baseball.htm

Here's a full write-up of the tour: http://www.thepitchbook.com/id12.html

Posted By: PC
James: the auction details for the reprint say the poster measures 16x11. The poster in the auction you won apparently measures 15x11.

Note that the reprint is taller, yet the print on that poster comes much closer to the margins (top and bottom) than the poster you won. This means not only that the reprint used taller paper stock, but it was enlarged to fit the stock.

So, assuming your item measures 15 x 11, it appears it is at least "different" than one of the known reprints. That's promising, but of course, there could be more than one style/size of reprint.

Please let us know if you ever find out for sure.

Posted By: James Feagin
I finally got it in the mail today, I was expecting an obvious reprint, this daggone poster might be real! It measures a perfect 15x11", and it's actually a poster, not a piece of cardboard. The poster does not show signs of artificial aging, quite the opposite. The print is not glossy and has some "age spots" on the back. If it is a reprint, it is older.

James

Posted By: Zach Rice
I would say it is fake as well. This image can easily be found and may even look good in person but scam artists have become so clever lately it is tough to tell with pieces like these. I recently purchased a piece that the only known image of it anywhere was put in a book and was an image about 2 inches tall and the one I bought was fake. Someone in the last few months, the book has only been out that long, had taken that little image out of the book and blown it up into the size of a poster over a foot tall, and they did a pretty good job with it too. I sent actual size scans of it to Rob Lifson who believed it to be authentic through the pictures but when in hand he could tell it was a reprint in seconds because of the paper stock. My poster also showed age spots and even fade from being in the sun and it was produced less than 6 months ago. If you want to know a difinitive answer on it's authenticity, send it to an expert.
