Posted By: Brian
Thanks. That was a pro team I take it? The photo came out of a scrapbook that my great-grandmother had put together of my great-grandfather (Frank with the arrow pointing to him in the picture). I was not aware he had played for a Philadelphia team. I knew he played pro in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Boston.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
Frank Wildfire Schulte played with the Chicago NL, Pittsburg NL, Philadelphia NL, and Washington AL. He was with Philadelphia for 64 games during the last half of the 1917 season. So that would be a 1917 photo.

If you were really wanting to nail down a date, get someone to look through Philadelphia sports pages during July, August and September of 1917, looking to see when Stock had a son born.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/schulfr01.shtml

That is the link to Baseball-Reference.com's schulte page. And somewhere I have a book that lists trade dates, if you really want to know the time frame he was in Philadelphia. He was with Washington for 1918.

You're fortunate that the photo has made it down generations to you. Gotta scout out someone younger to pass it on to, someone who won't pitch it or sell it. Aren't we all a bit curious about what will eventually happen to our cards, books, and stuff...

You mean to tell me you haven't put it in your last will and testament to have the cards buried with you? Now if you're going to be cremated that'll be a tough decision to make...

Posted By: Scott Mosley
Hi Brian,

I think the picture shows a contingent of Pittsburgh players on the left hand side (including your great grandfather) and then also a group of Philadelphia players on the right.

So, I think your information is correct that he played for Pittsburgh, its just that he ended up in this picture which happens to show players from both of those teams.

The uniforms on the left look correct for 1915-1917 Pirates

http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/exhibits/online_exhibits/dressed_to_the_nines/uniforms.asp?league=NL&city=Pittsburgh&lowYear=191 5&highYear=1917&sort=year&increment=9

The biggest evidence, if you look closely, is the mug of Honus Wagner smack dab in the middle of the picture in the back!

Great picture!

Scott

Posted By: Brian
Ahh, that makes perfect sense now; never realized that was two different teams in the photo.
I hope to one day scan everything in the scrapbook. I really need to have it preserved. Any suggestions?

Posted By: fkw
edited a couple times. First thought Miller, then read Schulte.....

I see your great grandfather is Frank Miller, so I was right in my first guess. The picture would have to be from 1916-18 then. And I was going to ask if he maybe was in the PCL, but now I see you already know that as I saw your nice collection in the other post "Player Collector..."

I'll haver to see if I have a 1912 Zeenut Miller
