Was This a Catchers Mask?

Posted By: Brock G.
This ended on ebay this morning and wonder if anyone thinks it was actually a catchers mask. A goalie mask maybe?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180307490 373&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=008
Posted By: Mark
I really doubt it. Since it is obviously home-made (and not a manufactured piece), the only way to know for sure would be to consult family members of the original owner.

It could be a crude home-made catchers mask, or goalie mask, or even a fencing mask. Whatever it is, I believe the seller did well to realize what he did on this piece.

I haven't seen any other exemplar that would justify this seller's Catchers Mask claim. Perhaps others know more, but I am skeptical...

Posted By: Brock G.
Definitely looks less than sturdy. I would not want to be wearing it while staring down a fastball or a slap-shot or a shark or what ever the hell it was used for. Kind of looks like it was made out of a lobster trap or something.

Was This a Catchers Mask?

Posted By: Keith
I saw this mask on ebay as well. One other less than sporty possibility is it could possibly be a horse mask. I saw another mask very similar to this one at an auction one time, with a long strap, that was meant to go over the end of a horse's muzzle, to prevent the eating of certain types of foods - whether hay or grain, etc. When I saw the long leather strap on the one on ebay, it made me think of that horse mask, as the strap would have to be very long to fit around the back of the horses head. Maybe I am way out on left field on this one though.
