Signed T206 Marquards
3 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to identify all of the signed T206 Marquards out there in hobbyland. If you have one that is not featured here (or if you have a scan of one that is not here) can you please send it my way, or post it here? I will add it to the composite in this post and update the thread.
Also please check out my thread on the number of signed T206 Doyles and Snodgrasses in existence here: DOYLES http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...77#post1660377 SNODGRASSES http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=255196 Thanks! Updated composites (11-26-18) Total: 57 Moved down 1 due to evidence of forgery discovered by Net54 member SetBuilder (Manny), which you can view here: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=262580 |
You have all 3 of mine

I know very little about autographs, but to me it looks like there is a huge amount of variability among those signatures. Is this because he signed over the course of a long life?
|
I have a throwing. It was in the shop when my dad closed it down. Now it's buried in storage somewhere. I'm planning an expedition to unearth stuff from storage. I'll post as soon as I find it.

I was guessing the variability was probably due to that in this case. Has anyone ever been able to date each of the signature types using anecdotal evidence, type of pen, etc?

It appears, he signed many T206 cards, I assume he has the most known signed examples of any player? How does that effect value?
I also see a lot of variance across all examples. I question the authenticity of some, as they look like they were signed by different hands. I get the age factor, but I see different slants, styles, etc. |

The only one that really shows different traits is this one, the rest are pretty consistent with how he signed over the course of time. I have been working on a small personal research project for a few months, and am now fairly certain that Rube's wife was signing for him for a very short period of time towards the end of his career, which previously hasn't been a concern. When I am finished with it I will eventually post a signature study on my site and the autograph section so that others can weigh in as well.

Here's mine

http://s16.postimg.org/hwrpw785h/marquard.jpg Ol' Rube must have been having a tough day...got a little confused and signed it twice! Or maybe he wanted this one to be twice as valuable... ;) In all seriousness, it looks like someone tried to forge his signature, failed, and then tried again. I bought this one on ebay with no expectation of it being an authentic signature; I just needed it for my collection and the price was right (i.e., cheap). It is an authentic T206 at least. Back is Sov 150 with some paper loss. For me, the "signature(s)" just add character. mm |

Yeah, there are 31 signed index cards of Marquard on ebay now, starting at $19.99. This beauty can be had for $29.99:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RUBE-MARQUAR...item4d02c9c556 The question is really how much does that amazing inscription add to the value of an otherwise $30 autographed index card? At that point you're paying for content more than signature. The value of content is extremely subjective. When I bought this Snodgrass collection, the letter wasn't much more than a throw-in. But, because of the content, and reference to a signed "Cigarette Photo card", it is more or less priceless to me. That's my subjective value. <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iVnw95YshRKaNIq75mOrtTiJm_Z5QsNdec5_I7WHZRE?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HbKQUVfXNZ8/SuOjGjWAmZI/AAAAAAAAgFQ/KD4ITKhnnNM/s800-Ic42/Sno%252520Letter.jpg" height="800" width="551" /></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/TdKWp3fflOR_eaUbgTBm1DiJm_Z5QsNdec5_I7WHZRE?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gROc4f5Ibsc/SuOi5h6LbUI/AAAAAAAAg3c/E2epseuATQI/s800-Ic42/Snodgrass%2525202.jpg" height="593" width="800" /></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HQmpwlTgFjPJwRwrir52fziJm_Z5QsNdec5_I7WHZRE?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9uqQE-BoOi0/SuOjGhp1k-I/AAAAAAAAHXI/JUcv9gpyi4c/s800-Ic42/SnoEnv.JPG" height="460" width="800" /></a> |
That letter is amazing!! I agree with your sentiments regarding the value of it.
|
Could he possibly mean "index cards" and not T206 type of cards?

Sorry for the bad scan...and it's not a signed T206 card, but another Snodgrass letter. Great baseball content here. Got this piece from Sir Jay Wolt.

Just found this Marquard card in a box I haven't checked in years. It's not a T206, but I thought this thread would be a good place to ask if you think it's his signature, or his name written by someone else? (sorry -- I can't get the signature photo right side up!)

Looks good to me. Not sure why the card was cut up after Rube signed it.
|
Yes, that makes no sense, another reason why I thought maybe it wasn't a real signature. I guess I now have two signed Marquard cards!
Greg |
You have mine. It has a polar bear back.

Small world Sean! Do you recall if I bought this card directly from you? (I have no memory of where it came from)
