But, now that I have the Eddie Plank, I'm content to say...." this set of mine is complete with 468 subjects ".

I originally embarked on this adventure back in 2006; and, I achieved a 467 -card subset. Then I sold half of the cards.
In recent years, I renewed my interest in completing this sub-set, so here it is.

Unload some stuff.....that's an interesting thought.

Hey Ted, would you sell your Thunderbird if it meant being able to buy a Wagner?

Hey Sean......I don't trade cars for cards :)

My 1957 Thunderbird hardtop convertible....Willow Green....with a 312 cu. in. V8....4-barrel Holley carb....and, 3-speed stick shift w/Overdrive is
considerably scarcer than a T206 Honus Wagner card. There are approx. 80 cards of the T206 Wagner; but, less than 20 models of this T-bird.

Eventually my daughter will have this car. Zoe has fond memories from her youth in the 1970's, when we would remove the top off the T-Bird
and cruise over to Island Beach State Park on the Jersey shore.

You ask an interesting question....Taylor. Here are the complete (or near complete) T206 sub-sets in my collection......

All--PIEDMONT set = 519 cards (missing Joe Doyle, Plank, Wagner).

All--SOVEREIGN set = 408 cards COMPLETE.

All--SWEET CAPORAL, Factory #30 set = 468 cards (missing Wagner).

All--AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 set = 72 cards (of 74), (missing Camnitz & Larry Doyle).

All brands--T206 set = 514 cards [missing 5 commons, Elberfeld (Washington), Joe Doyle, Magie, Plank, Wagner].

And yes, I hope to be in "Chi-town" next Summer.

That's quite an accomplishment.

I missed talking with you in AC this year, but I hung around with Johnny for the better part of one of my days there, so I did have someone who spoke the same T206 language as me. :)

Impressive subset Ted, well done!

Joshwesley 09-08-2016 10:47 PM

What's more impressive Ted..... Is that 1980's Prince original graphite tennis racquet.... (Or is it a sting)?

That would be more scarce than the car or Wagner 😂

Josh

You are correct....it is indeed an original Prince graphite tennis racquet.....I'm impressed with your observation.

I purchased two of these Prince racquets 26 years ago. And, 7 years ago, while hunting for Tobacco cards (and related stuff) at an Antique shop,
I found this same Prince racquet (with its cover & my grip size) for only $25. That really made my day. It was worth the 55 mile trip to this shop.

These racquets are "rare"....but, not as scarce as the T-Bird :)

That's funny...I too remember the early composite tennis racquets...I still have my yonex r22 from my youth.

I routinely see the composite racquetball racquets I coveted as a kid at goodwill for $2-$5. I bought one once and I use it to play a friend who I routinely beat to even the playing field. With the old racquet he beats me!!!!

tedzan 09-09-2016 12:13 PM

Hey Pete

I still have my Dunlop Maxply (wooden racquet) that I used to play with in the 1970's.

It was the same racquet Rod Laver and John McEnroe played with back in the '70s. I figured if this racquet was good enough for Rod and Johnny Mac,
it was good enough for me.

And it was....for I would beat guys playing with Composite and Steel racquets back then.

Ted,
Love the Plank. Really nice looking.
What's the reason for the "A" grade. Slight trim, color added? Just curious.
Regardless of what the reason is, it is great looking.

thats funny because one of my favorite halloween costumes is johny mac...I have it down pretty good and part of my routine is smashing a racquet to bits! So as a result I need to replace it each year. I'm not too selective about the racquet I choose it all depends what I can find at the goodwill that year!!!!

Pete

You may find this "somewhat insulting", but I do think we think alike :)

In 1973, at our mixed bowling league's Halloween party I was dressed up as Bobby Riggs. That summer, Riggs played Billy Jean King in the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match.

I styled my hair to look like Riggs, wore dark rimmed glasses and modified a broom to look like a gigantic tennis racket. The front of my T-shirt read "If you don't know me, I'll
turn my back to you." The back of my T-shirt read "Bobby Riggs".

I was awarded "The most creative costume" prize at the party (a bottle of Southern Comfort).

ullmandds 09-09-2016 03:03 PM

i could totally see that ted...you look a bit like riggs...I was a little kid but I remember that!

I never really thought I looked like john mcenroe but I've had total strangers in the past yell "mcenroe" at me from a distance.

Thing is though when I wear the outfit a lot of people think I'm bjorn borg or royal tennanbaums!"

I was not in A/C last month. So, I missed seeing you; and, all the Net54er's I look forward to seeing every Summer at the National.

Also, I was to "hook-up" with Johnny V....and, of course that didn't happen.

Ted,

Several of my college teammates played with the POG (mid and OS)

Believe it or not tennis warehouse still sales these brand new (old stock)

Classic frame that will never go out of style...

I've turned to the dark side and went babolat years ago... Too much free power and pop... I'm sure the devil will come to collect and take my arm when I'm older though! Lol

Great thread and awesome cards!

And, thanks for reminding me with your scans of the Frank Smith (Chicago & Boston) card that it should not be classified as a SWEET CAP, Factory #30 No Print.
I have amended my initial post here.

Listed here are the 53 - No Prints in this set......

Kleinow (Boston)

** Footnote
The Kleinow (Boston) and Frank Smith (Chicago & Boston)....along with 55 other subjects....were printed with SWEET CAP 350-460, Factory #30 backs.
However, were never inserted in Sweet Caporal cigarette packs (produced in Factory #30, NYC).
Instead, these 57 cards were overprinted with " Factory #42, N.C. ". Then these overprinted cards were shipped to the Durham, NC factory (1911). Therefore,
more accurately stated, Kleinow and Frank Smith are "Not-Issued" cards in this set.
