What were your favorite 2 or 3 pieces you picked up this year...

For me, it would have to be;

1) The first photo ever taken of Lou Gehrig in a Yankees uniform. From the Bill Mastro Collection.

Attachment 29661Attachment 29662

2) Pittsburgh Pirates Roberto Clemente Memorial "21" Patch that was worn by the 1973 team. Also from the Mastro Collection.

Attachment 29663

3) This was a tough decision, but I'm going with this 1958 TYPE 1 photo of Mickey Mantle & Henry Aaron crossing their bats at the '58 Series.

Attachment 29664

what's yours?

Picked up a lot of little stuff this year, but two that I've been wanting for awhile came at the beginning of the year and towards the end.

Top 3 pickups 2010

3 Attachment(s)
Jimmy,
Great idea for a thread! I actually thought about this one myself. It's been a great year for pickups for me, but...

My top 3 would be:

1) Walter Johnson signed and dated photo from his last season- 1927 (REA auction)
2) Dick Enberg's personal scoresheets from all four of Nolan Ryan's 19 K games (Hunt All-Star auction)
3) Christy Mathewson dated win ticket from 1910 (eBay)

thekingofclout 12-27-2010 09:11 AM

Those are two essential tickets to have Mike. Very nice! ;)

And Scott, the Johnson piece is superb, as is the Matty stub, but those Enberg/Ryan score sheets are off the charts! Amazing pick ups for sure.

Growing up in So Cal during the Seventies was a very special time in regards to Baseball. Although the Angels and Dodgers got skunked for the decade, having the pure pleasure of listening to Vin Scully and Dick Enberg calling games on those warm summer nights, while I sat on my bed playing with my card collection, was like... like... like... like nothing I can ever fairly compare it to. Priceless memories for sure. :)

Happy New Year! My best, Jimmy

Jimmy,
Like you, I'm sentemental about Scully and Enberg calling those summer games in my youth as well. I love the fact that I own one small piece of this.
No doubt that that your 1st photo of Gehrig in a Yankees uniform is the bomb! What a great pickup!

Mike,
I agree with Jimmy that both of the tickets that you ended up picking up are great ones. Both represent unbelievable moments in baseball history. Congrats to you as well!

After a bit of a lull the last half of the year due to family health issues, I finished off the year with a bang.

My favorite item(s) is the group of signed 1934 goudeys I won on ebay at the end of the year. I waited all year to get some new additions for my set. I'm now at 70/96.
I'm only showing the Melillo,(the others are shown in the Christmas thread.), as its has a little special story. Another ebay seller has had one listed for over a year for $800. I tried to negotiate it down to a more reasonable level, but he was not willing. In a triumph of patience, I won this one for $78.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Melillo002.jpg

Second is a snapshot of the 1927 Yankees team from Spring training. It compares exactly to the offically taken ST team pic, except mine is off to the side. What are the odds that the guy who took the pic would've been visiting ST on the exact day they were taking the team pic?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...YanksSTa-2.jpg

Third is the Gehrig Burke type 1.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...urke_Front.png

Sorry, I had to add a fourth as it was soo close.
A March 1954 Sport Magazine signed by Casey Stengel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rt195403ab.jpg

Jimmy, it's hard to believe that the Gehrig pic with Christy Walsh's kid didn't make it.

Mike, I think I may have to target one of those Gehrig tickets this coming year, myself! Yours is a nice one.

Scott, I love the Johnson pic. It's a beauty.

Best to all. Hopefully we'll have an even better new year as well.
Mark

I really didn't add that much too the collection this year but if I had to choose a couple it would be these two. I've really wanted a 19th century silver trophy baseball for a while and picked up this 1875 model. Next is a Royals jersey I've wanted for a while. Followed them in the 70's and 80's and was finally able to land a powder blue jersey. It's a 1976 gamer of Hal McRae.

This was difficult, but fun:D

Since it was a gift, I didn't consider it a "pick up". What can I say Mark, I'm anal that way.

I must say that it sure looks like EVERYBODY that posted had a terrific year! Well done Gents and Congrats to all.

There's no name inscribed on the ring.

Here's the original artwork from the files of Balfour, which I bought a few years before the ring:

Wow, so many great pieces -- it's totally worthwhile seeing some of them again.
Because I'm a bat guy, I live your Lincoln bat find Dan, and Bugsy your St. Paul collection is amazing -- great trademark criss cross tape job on that Snider bat.
(not to derail things, but i just put a St. Paul game used ball from 1948 -- Campy's year -- on my website).
Rob, I also think your ring and Balfour artwork are simply incredible companion pieces, and Richard your Jefferson and Twain pieces have me drooling!

I'll just put my top two new bats in this post -- the Juan Marichal gamer may be only one known. These two make a big dent in my HOF gamer collection.

One of my favorites and the only autographed card currently in my collection:

Jay Wolt 12-29-2010 06:33 PM

Been a lean year buying cards & memorabilia for the collection.
But got this neat piece at a good price. 1933 letter from Christy Walsh
to Bill Dickey letting him know he made the All American Baseball Team.
Which was like an All Star selection which started a few years before the
actual All Star game. Babe Ruth's facsmile sig is on the left and Dickey's
All America patch is also included in the frame

This was one of those years where I had my best luck with non-sports memorabilia...but I was very happy to pick up this 1934 easel-backed store display:

Jay. That Walsh/Dickey piece is absolutely killer! I have maybe 35-40 photos in my collection that came from the Walsh Family. Congrats on that! Please think of me if you ever decide to move it.;)

Three more "wants" removed from list

.

A good year is any year that I can remove one name from my want list.

An excellent year is any year inwhich I can remove two names from my want list.

But to be able to strike three names from that list, it had to be considered a great year.

And in consideration of all the other great autograph items I added to my personal collection this year, AWESOME would not be much of a stretch either.

My three "wants" no more:
Joe Casey Boston Old-Timers game scorecard cut (with partial G.C. Alexander signature at bottom)
Jim Walsh cardboard stock cut
Del Gainer 3x5 (from Danahy collection)

J.McMurry 12-30-2010 10:29 AM

Was there something erased from the center and bottom left corner of that Gainer 3x5?

Vince,
Glad to hear that you found a few that you were looking for in 2010... Thanks again for the help locating the Alex "Miles" Main sig off my list this year. I hope that you have another successful year in 2011!

HexsHeroes 12-30-2010 02:32 PM

.

glad the Alex Main went to a good home.

I believe a date 6/18/?? was erased from the bottom left corner.

Not sure what the two erased words in the center are, except that the upper of the two words starts with a capital E (attractively written I might add).
A notation by the original collector?

Perhaps another member with better photo editing software could reveal what the two words, and the year are (were).

To be honest, I was so thrilled to have won the Gainer 3x5, that I didn't give the erased words much consideration.

My favorite "Gas House Ganger"

4 Attachment(s)
I picked up this 1941 Pacific Coast League All team ball with sweet spot autograph of my favorite "Gas House Gang" player, Pepper Martin. It's from the personal collection of former Cardinal and Brownie infielder Don Gutteridge. Gutteridge was in between major league stops and joined his best friend Martin who was player/manager playing for the Sacramento Salons in '41. I originally sold it for Gutteridge, a longtime friend, in 2004 when he decided to sell off his All Star Bats, dozens of minor league team balls, etc. I was always sorry that I didn't buy it myself but when offered a chance to trade back for it recently, from the collector that I sold it to 6 years ago, I jumped at the opportunity. It doesn't have the Legendary Tony Freitas, but it's still a really tough piece with personal attachment from my friend, and I'm thrilled to have it in my collection.

One of the board members was nice enough to sell me a 1924 D&M Catcher figural trophy earlier in the year. The trophy had originally been purchased from the National Pastime in Cooperstown, NY. Shortly after I received the trophy, I decided to have a master silversmith restore it to its original condition.

Here are a few before and after photos. It now proudly sits in a period mahagony display case. Somewhere in it's history, an owner glued the trophy lid to the loving cup. When the restored trophy came back from the master silversmith, I was thrilled to see that there was actually two pieces to the trophy.

Thanks,

Patrick

Catcher Figural Trophy

Hi Jay,

I found a Master Silversmith in Bellingham, WA, David Friedman, that restored the trophy. Cost of the restoration was around $400.00. I would have no problem recommending his work. The trophy makes an awesome focal point to my catcher collection.
